How Stars Spend Super Bowl Sunday

February 1st, 2009

Celebrities love the Super Bowl.

Inkheart star Brendan Fraser tells me he can’t get enough “buffalo wings and suds” while Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively calls out “nachos and hot dogs” as her favorite indulgences during the big game.

This will be Slumdog Millionaire star Dev Patel’s first Super Bowl. Will he watch? “I guess I will, if you want me to,” he tells me. What will he eat? “I love my popcorn, and a good hot dog,” he tells me. “A big, fat, juicy hot dog because I’m a slumdog. Oh, that was bad.”

How will Mr. and Mrs. Howard Stern spend the big day?

“I will get out my Terrible Towel, and that’s something a Pittsburgher would know,” Beth Ostrosky Stern tells me. “It’s a Pittsburgh thing. It’s towel that has the Pittsburgh Steelers on it. In 1981, we were all waving our Terrible Towels. Howard and I will be watching it up on the big TV, and I’ll probably make turkey chili.”

America’s Next Top Model
judge Nigel Barker won’t be tuning in to watch the big game. “I don’t watch the Super Bowl,” he tells me. “I’m an Englishman. I’m a soccer fan.”

However, Gone Country star Justin Guarini will be watching. “My favorite Super Bowl snack is either a Philly cheese steak, if I can get my hands on one, or a nice Philly pretzel with mustard – French’s mustard,” the season one American Idol runner-up tells me. “It’s a little piece of home because I travel so much. I’ll take every little piece of home I can get.”

Fellow Gone Country star Richard Grieco will order pizza. “It came from it was easy to do back when we were kids, and it’s always been my favorite since then.”

What are his Super Bowl traditions?

“Well, I usually go for one thing, but if I don’t go, I usually watch it by myself because I don’t want any outside interference when I’m concentrating on the game,” Richard says.

Of course, Super Bowl Sunday is a big day for the former 21 Jump Street star. “I watch football every Thursday night, every Saturday, every Sunday, every Monday night. Then I watch NFL Network when I go to sleep, or ESPN when I go to sleep.”

Their Gone Country costar Taylor Dayne adds, “I’ll lay out a table and make sure we have some beer in the house. There’s been everything from nachos to tons and tons.”

Ciara
says, “I look forward to inviting some friends and just sitting down and watching the game.”

Does Saturday Night Live star – and Bride Wars writer – Casey Wilson have any traditions?

“Oh man, I don’t. Yeah, sadly. It sounds like a dumb girl – yeah, I don’t know anything about football. But the truth of that matter is I don’t.”

Keyshia Cole seconds that thought. “I am not into football. Usually I might take my dogs Lyric, Lola and Gizmo to get groomed  … or maybe clean up.”

Cassie
is more traditional. “I’m usually at home with my family eating junk food,” she tells me.

Enjoy your Super Bowl Sunday, everyone!

The Most Star-studded Single Ever?

August 19th, 2008

Could this be the most star-studded single of all time?

Fifteen (!) of the biggest female names in pop music are going to squeeze on to one charity single to support the Stand Up To Cancer campaign.

Just Stand Up, produced by Babyface, will feature (deep breath) Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna, Fergie, Sheryl Crow, Miley Cyrus, Melissa Etheridge, Ashanti, Natasha Bedingfield, Keyshia Cole, Ciara, Leona Lewis, LeAnn Rimes and Carrie Underwood.

Wow.

And they’re going to perform it live on the Stand Up To Cancer television special, which will make television history on September 5th by being broadcast simultaneously on ABC, NBC and CBS during primetime.

Other stars expected to turn out for the hourlong show include Jennifer Aniston, Lance Armstrong, Katie Couric, Sally Field, Salma Hayek, Meryl Streep, Forest Whitaker and Reese Witherspoon, according to NYTimes.com.

All sales of the track, available on iTunes from September 2, will go towards cancer research.

Stars Celebrate Valentine’s Day

February 14th, 2008

Celebs love to be loved just as much as everyone else.

While Sheryl Crow, Keyshia Cole, Cassie and Christy Turlington will be working, newly engaged KT Tunstall is celebrating the day in Scotland. “We’ll be checking out wedding venues,” she tells me.

“I’m gonna…,” George Clooney, who is dating Sarah Larson, jokes.

“This is going to be my first Valentine’s Day in three years on my own,” Jesse McCartney tells me. “It just might be me on my couch this year. And the TV.”

“I’ll be ordering room service,” Rachel Bilson says. “I’ll be in a hotel room here. Hahaha.” As for his plans, her boyfriend Hayden Christensen says “nothing right now.”

Ryan Reynolds, whose movie Definitely, Maybe opens today, says, “My plan is to run out with 150 of my closest friends and see Definitely, Maybe.” Costar Rachel Weisz says she hopes to go out to dinner. “It’s very hard to get the kids together,” she says. “It’s very sad. I might stay in.”

“The best Valentine’s Day – or the ones I always liked – is when my boyfriend would remember it was Valentine’s Day,” Vanessa Carlton tells me. “That was always a plus.”

Cupid’s arrow certainly puts Brody Jenner in a good mood.

“Usually my mom is my Valentine but this year, yes, I’m going to have a girlfriend,” Brody tells me. “Honestly, it’s been a long time since I actually celebrated Valentine’s Day.”

Selma Blair will be single this VDay. “I’m going to sleep,” she laughs. Gossip Girl’s Dreama Walker tells me she has a date with Ben – and Jerry. (Ha ha) “Dublin Mudslide, definitely.”

How did the stars spend their most memorable Valentine’s Days?

"Last Valentine’s Day I had a show, but afterwards I hung out with my boyfriend and all my friends and their boyfriends," Colbie Caillat tells me. "We went to dinner." (She has a new boyfriend this year.)

“We went for a balloon ride,” Phil Donahue, who is married to Marlo Thomas, tells me.

Naomi Judd remembers, “We went for a ride in our ’56 T-bird, and it’s got those bucket seats. It doesn’t have bucket seats – it has a bench seat. So we put the top down and rode around the countryside with my arm around him, so we can get up snuggly.”

Half the battle is knowing what interests you – and what doesn’t.

Emily Mortimer and hubby Alessandro Nivola know what they’re not going to do. “Not go out and sit in a restaurant with 25 other couples looking into each other’s eyes,” she tells me. “It’s terribly embarrassing.”

And sometimes it’s about a different kind of love.

Gone Country host and country singer John Rich tells me, “My grandmother’s birthday is on Valentine’s Day, so it’s always cool to celebrate her birthday. My grandmother makes all my stage clothes. She’ll be 77 this year. I wear rhinestone jeans and rhinestone shirts – all these crazy outfits. I’ve had big artists come up to me and say ‘man, where’d you get that?’ I’m like ‘oh, my Granny Rich made that.’ She’s a real part of my career and my imaging. Her birthday’s on Valentine’s Day, so I always load her up with a bunch of flowers. She has a little alteration shop in Tennessee. It’s always cool on Valentine’s Day to take care of Granny Rich.”

Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!

Carrie, Rihanna, Fergie, Christina Get Ready For Grammys

February 9th, 2008

Carrie Underwood, Rihanna, Fergie, Christina Aguilera, John Mayer, Taylor Swift and Keyshia Cole hope to add Grammys to their prize closets after Sunday’s ceremony.

How will Carrie get ready? “Whenever there’s an event coming up, we hire a stylist to tell me what’s cute because I honestly don’t know,” the four-time nominee tells me. “I walk around in my pajamas most of the time. I’ve had people tell me ‘now Carrie, people are going to be wanting to look at you and they want to see you look glamorous.’ I’m like ‘that’s not me! I can’t do it.’ Anytime there’s anything important, we hire someone to come in and make me look cute.” (She already has two Grammys!)

Six-time nominee Rihanna is thrilled to be in the house with Beyonce, whom she idolized growing up. (They’re actually going head-to-head in the record of the year category!) “The first thing I saw was her beauty, and then I listened to her music — she’s incredibly talented,” Rihanna tells me. “I think she’s what every female artist should strive to be. Despite all her success, she’s still humble.”

It’ll be no sweat for Fergie to fit into her dress. “I get my food delivered to me,” the best female pop vocal performance nominee tells me. “It’s Diet Designs – its like the Zone. You go through 1,000 foods and you tell them which foods you like and which ones you don’t. They don’t include the ones you don’t like on your menu. It’s good – you get to eat!” (Yep, she already has three Grammys from her Black Eyed Peas days.)

Two-time nominee Christina, who gave birth to son Max January 12, tells me, “I’m at the happiest place I’ve ever been in my life.” (She already has five Grammys!)

John says he thanks his lucky stars he didn’t stick with the band growing up. “When you get to fifth grade, you get the band instruments,” the best male pop vocal performance nominee tells me. “Some of the kids who stay in strings turn out a little weird. Then, I picked up the guitar. My experience was that I had to go home and do that.” (Wow! He has five Grammys.)

Three-time nominee Nelly tells me her dream collaboration would be with Eminem. (Yep, she already has one too.)

Taylor, who is nominated for best new artist, tells me, “If I got a Grammy, it would be an amazing icing on the cake.”

Keyshia is up for best rap/sung collaboration and best contemporary R&B album.

“I’m surprised because I didn’t think it would happen this year,” she tells me. “I didn’t think I put the work into it that was ready for the Grammy nominations. I like my slow process. I pray to God that the slow process continues to be as slow as it is because with the slow process, you are able to look at things every day and see what you want to do and what you don’t want to do. Take your days slow. The fast thing is not my speed. I’m very blessed to have it so soon.”

How much does winning music’s biggest prize really mean? Just ask nine-time winner Sheryl Crow, who stashes them in her study.

“To me, more than anything, they’re recognition of care – that I do care about the kind of music I put out and I care about the quality of it. It’s recognition of hard work. Although I don’t think about them and I don’t notice them so much, but when I do, it’s a nice feeling.”

The 50th Annual Grammy Awards air on CBS beginning at 8pm ET/PT Sunday. Good luck, guys!

How The Stars Spend Super Bowl Sunday

February 3rd, 2008

Football’s biggest night is a great time to whoop it up.

Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively tells me she’s going to chow down while she watches the Super Bowl live in Phoenix.

“The more fattening, the better,” she laughs. “Nachos, hot dogs, whatever they have. I’ve never been to the Super Bowl.”

She’s not alone in pigging out.

“I’m usually at home with my family, eating junk food,” Cassie tells me. This year, she’ll be in L.A. promoting her movie Step Up 2 but she considered going to Phoenix.

“I don’t know much about football,” Gossip Girl’s Dreama Walker tells me. “I think my friends and I are going to rent out boxes and maybe see if we can win some money.” Still, if it doesn’t involve her favorite team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, she says, “I don’t really have anything to do with it.”

Some gals couldn’t care less about the game.

“I’m performing Super Bowl Sunday," Keyshia Cole, who is part of the Valerie Gallery, tells me. "They’re having a private party for the NFL players, but I’m sorry, I am not into football. Usually I might take my dogs Lyric, Lola and Gizmo to get groomed … or maybe clean up.”

How do the players get ready for football’s biggest night?

While the New York GiantsAmani Toomer tells me “I try to relax as much as possible” before the big game, his teammates are more serious.

“I’m just trying to take care of my body, making sure that when the game rolls around, I’m in the best shape I can be in,” Michael Strahan tells me.

“These guys are a very good football team,” Brandon Jacobs tells me. “We know we’re going to have our work cut out for us, so right now we’re getting our game plan on.”

Good luck to the New York Giants and the New England Patriots. May the best team win.

KEYSHIA COLE BACK IN STUDIO

January 31st, 2008

I’m hearing that Grammy nominee Keyshia Cole, who will compete for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration and Best Contemporary R&B Album at the awards ceremony Feb. 1o, is returning to the studio, TV studio that is. She’ll be taping a special edition of her hit reality series, The Way It Is, to air on BET in the spring. In the stand-alone episode, we’ll get an update on her sister, Neffe, who recently gave birth to her fourth child, Keyshia’s mom Frankie, a recovering addict, and the singer’s ongoing search for her biological father. Details are developing, but this sounds like one family reunion not be missed!

One Day With Keyshia Cole

January 26th, 2008

Keyshia Cole has a reputation for being behind schedule, but she turns on the charm as soon as she arrives. The 26-year-old singer is promoting her first flick How She Move, and I get the drift that she’s delayed just because she’s trying to keep everyone happy. She’s friendly and accommodating at every turn.

When we first meet, she strides into NYC’s Paramount’s offices with her co-stars Rutina Wesley and Tre Armstrong an hour-and-a-half later than expected after putting in an appearance at MTV down the street.

(Luckily, we journalists console ourselves with chocolate-chip cookies, and swag including How She Move t-shirts, hats and tanks.)

How has being the reality star of BET’s highest-rated show in history, Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is, changed things for the platinum-selling R&B singer?

“It hasn’t,” the two-time Grammy nominee says. “It just gave people a little insight on me and my family. I wanted that. They need to see – especially the young ladies who buy the album, regardless of what background that might be – they look to me, and they see where I come from, where I’m headed and what I’ve accomplished. I wanted them to know that the behind-the-scenes outlook of it all. It ain’t easy, and I succeeded with a mother like this, and my sister’s going to be OK. Don’t even worry about it – we’re going to make it.”

The next day, I meet Keyshia at NYC’s Planet Hollywood for her handprint ceremony. Twenty photographers bide their time for forty minutes until she arrives with Rutina and Tre.

“I feel like Britney Spears,” Keyshia says, flashbulbs popping. “That’s why you’re driving Britney Spears crazy!”

We head upstairs to a private area, where she samples carrots and chicken fingers. Timbaland and OneRepublic’s Apologize and Nickelback’s Hero provide the soundtrack.

Keyshia plays herself judging a dance competition in How She Move, which is out now.

“When I saw the film, I cried three times,” she says. “I could relate to it. You could feel her character. That’s why I say ‘Rutina’s going to be big, like Angela Bassett’ because she can make me feel it and understand what the character really means.”

Alas, acting is not a career Keyshia hopes to pursue.

“I’m not excited about it,” she says. “I like to know what I’m doing before I do it. I don’t have any experience, and I don’t have time to really get into the classes.”

Her co-star Tre encourages her to turn on the drama.

“I’d love to see you, so if you ever change your mind, let us know,” she tells her.

Keyshia overcame a hardscrabble upbringing, and can certainly do anything she puts her mind to do.

“My mother has been on drugs my entire life,” she tells me. “I stayed focused. You have to have determination, and sometimes it takes sacrifice. You have to be willing to give what it takes.”

Co-Stars Call Paris a Good Singer

January 24th, 2008 / Author: cwillett

Paris Hilton is trying her hand at singing and acting again — at the same time.

The 26-year-old socialite can next be seen in the horror musical Repo! The Genetic Opera, which is due in theaters this April, and it sounds like she sure impressed her colleagues with her performance.

Choreographer Tre Armstrong, who stars in How She Move opening this weekend, tells OK!, “I was surprised that she could sing. Honest to God, I will never crack on Paris. I haven’t. From what I heard from what they did, I liked how she sounded.”

Tre’s co-star, Grammy-nominated R&B singer Keyshia Cole, echoes that sentiment.

“I like the way she sings,” she tells OK! “I do.”

But it seems like Paris could use some work in the dancing department.

“She needs development in terms of movement, but it wasn’t a dance movie,” Tre says, adding that the flick is a cross between The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Saw and Sweeney Todd.

“Let’s say you’ve got a car — a lavish car — you love it, but you can’t afford the payments but you have it anyway. [Knocks] Repo man is going to come get the car if you default on the payment. But, let’s think of it this way — I love your arm, so I’ll take your arm and put it on my arm, and get rid of this one. I love your face, so I’m going to cut my face off and put it on my face.”

She continues, “We’re all nip/tucked today, right? Everything’s nipped, tucked and shwooshed, right? Advance that fifty years and see where we’re going to go. It’s really expensive, right? You can’t afford that. [Knock, knock, knock.] Excuse me, you have our heart, you defaulted for two months on your payment? You have the money? No? I’m sorry, and they cut out your heart and take it back.”
