OK! Exclusive: Laila Ali’s Baby Joy
October 2nd, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff
She’s seen her father, Muhammad Ali, conquer opponents in the ring, and as a boxer herself, Laila Ali knows that confidence is crucial when preparing for a fight.
Her approach to tackling motherhood was no different. “If all these other women have
been able to do it, then so can I,” Laila tells OK!. “I have never been afraid that parenthood was going to be too much for me.”
Indeed, as a new mom to Curtis Muhammad Conway Jr., she’s now experiencing the happiest “challenge” of her life. On Aug. 26, Laila, 30, and her husband, retired NFL star Curtis Conway celebrated the arrival of their first child together.
That’s not to say it was easy.
The correspondent for The Early Show and former Dancing With the Stars contestant had been planning a home birth when complications forced her to deliver at a hospital instead. After 15 hours of labor, her healthy little champ arrived, weighing in at 6 pounds, 8 ounces.

“He’s brought a lot of joy to my life,” Laila says.

September 11th, 2008
Daughter of boxing legend Muhammad Ali and boxing superstar in her own right, Laila Ali, has given birth to a son, Curtis Muhammad Conway, Jr., on Aug. 26, she announced on her official site today.
The TV personality and accomplished athlete says Curtis Jr. weighed in at 6.8 lbs and measured 19 inches long.
The healthy baby boy is named after his father, former NFL player, Curtis Conway and received his middle name, Muhammad, in honor of Laila’s father. Mother and son are resting and are healthy and happy.
Congratulations!
Laila Ali: I’m Going to Be a Strict Mom!
June 30th, 2008
Her son is not here yet, but Laila Ali already knows exactly what type of mother she’s going to be.
"I think I’ll be one of those overprotective mothers that can be a little too strict sometimes," she tells Entertainment Tonight. "My husband is going to have to watch me to make sure I don’t go overboard!"
The boxer and her husband, NFL player Curtis Conway, expect their boy, to be named Curtis Muhammad, in September, and she’s not the only one excited. Dad Muhammad Ali can’t wait for his grandson to arrive either.
"He’s very excited to be having a boy in particular," Laila says.
So far, the 30-year-old has had a relatively easy pregnancy. No morning sickness or weird cravings of any sort. And the baby weight?
"I have gained 25 pounds, but I’m gonna go back to that gym and work it all off so I’m not really worried about it," she says.
For more on Laila, tune in to ET on Tuesday.
Curtis & Laila: Sole Mates
June 17th, 2008
Dancing With the Stars alum Laila Ali is being swept off her feet as she awaits the birth of her first child with hubby Curtis Conway. Laila, who is expecting a boy in September, says Curtis is making sure she stays relaxed, giving her foot massages!
"My husband’s exceptional!" she gushed. Of course the couple is still very much in the honeymoon stage–they’re about to celebrate their one-year wedding anniversary on July 22. And the 30-year old beauty, who makes an appearance on NBC’s Celebrity Family Feud in July, insists all the attention she gets from Curtis is no new thing.
"It’s not just when I’m pregnant," she smiles. "We both take care of each other, that’s just how it is."
HULK’S GLADIATOR DAZE
January 4th, 2008
Weekend warriors are getting the chance to battle again as American Gladiators is coming back to TV. The new version of the ‘90s competition show that pits buff gladiator types against everyday contestants premieres Sun., Jan. 6 on NBC.
My Los Angeles counterpart, Carole Glines, caught up with hosts Hulk Hogan and Laila Ali and some of the gladiators to get the scoop on the latest writers’ strike-proof reality offering.
I think it’s going to be a monster [hit]. If these guys turn into larger than life characters, they’ll develop a fan base,” said Hulk, who was “a huge fan” of the original series.
The former wrestler and Hogan Knows Best star, 54, is content to be a host because he doesn’t think he could compete on the new show. “You’d probably be rolling me out of here in an ambulance after the first event,” he laughs.
The intensely physical show will have contestants jousting, rock climbing, scaling a giant padded pyramid and engaging in hand-to-hand combat among other contests.
Hulk’s co-host, former professional boxer and Dancing with the Stars celebrity Laila said the show is “visually impressive—the water, the fire, people are going at it. The contenders are feisty people. They’re talking smack! I think viewers will be rooting for the contenders. They’ll really get to know them with background stories that are so interesting.”
The gladiators will be ready for them, however. Don Yates, who goes by the Gladiator name “Wolf,” said, “this is the new American Gladiators—it’s bigger, better, faster, and stronger. I’m crazy. I’m wild. I tend to howl a lot.”
Female gladiator Jamie Kovac, who is known as “Fury,” warned, “Don’t make this girl angry! I go all out.”
Alex Castro, whose gladiator name is "Militia," originally came to America on a boat from Cuba. He became a performer with the Cirque de Soleil and later joined the Marines.
Meanwhile, Mike O’Hearn, known by his gladiator name “Titan” is sure to be a female fan favorite with his superhero face and buff body. Carole smartly inquired if he’s available. “I’m not married,” he revealed, adding with a smile, “I’m an Aquarius. I like long walks on the beach. I have three dogs.”
I may have to sign up!
