Family, friends and fans gathered at the Staples Center in L.A. on July 7 to honor the late, great King of Pop, Michael Jackson. The deeply moving memorial service was a time for loved ones to share touching stories and memories they had of MJ, as the world joined them to express their deep love for the man who revolutionized music.

Nicole Richie lived The Simple Life, but the same can’t be said for her father, Lionel.
The singer was honored with the Icon trophy at the TV Land Awards over the weekend and told his peers it’s his not his music career that ought to be admired, but rather how he endured life with Nicole!
”Forget about surviving 40 years in the music business. Just surviving 27 years of Nicole Richie has been a struggle-and-a-half, I want to tell you," Lionel joked. "I stand here as a survivor, I want you to know, for all the parents out there.”
Indeed the 58-year-old has been through a lot with his daughter, who infamously battled alcohol and substance abuse and served an 82-minute stint in jail last summer for a DUI.
After that, it was all about new beginnings though — Nicole and Joel Madden welcomed daughter Harlow in January and, according to "G-Pa" Lionel, everything changed.
“She went from, ‘Dad, I don’t care. Whatever you say.’ to ‘Wash your hands, dad.’ and ‘Be quiet, dad,’ ” he says. “It’s a whole new sound of the house.”
Don’t call Lionel Richie “grandpa”!
The Grammy winner has a granddaughter — little Harlow by daughter Nicole Richie — but he doesn’t really like his new familial title that comes along with the new addition.
“I went to Nicole and said, ‘Grandpa, how does that sound? Does that fit me?’ She said, ‘Dad, that sounds old.’ So I kind of searched out. G-Pa sounds a lot better,” he tells Extra at the 25th Annual ASCAP Pop Music Awards, where he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
G-Pa has been helping Nicole and Joel Madden out, too, with Harlow, often baby-sitting the 3-month-old.
“He actually baby-sat the other day him and Joel and they were amazing,” Nicole says, adding that Harlow slept the whole time, which was perfectly fine with her dad.
“It’s when the baby wakes up that I freak out!” Lionel says.
Joking aside, Nicole says her family has been nothing short of helpful now that she’s a mom.
“[Motherhood] is definitely like nothing I could have imagined,” the 26-year-old says. “It’s beyond amazing and my family has been supportive.”
And does Lionel see a change in his daughter?
“She went from, ‘Dad, I don’t care. Whatever you say.’ to ‘Wash your hands, dad.’ and ‘Be quiet, dad,’ ” he says. “It’s a whole new sound of the house.”

It must feel good to be David Cook. Even if he doesn’t win American Idol, he’s still got a partnership with one of the giants of pop to fall back on.
Lionel Richie has said that he was so blown away by David’s grungy cover of his 1984 hit “Hello” that he wants to release it as a single. "I am putting that song out myself, with David on it. That is a smash record that David did the other night. I couldn’t believe it," Lionel raved. "David just played it as if it was his song from the beginning— there was no Lionel Richie involved. He had the arrangement. It was fabulous. He just killed it."
David, 25, from Bluesprings, Missouri, secured his place in the final 12 when he played the song on last week’s 1980s-themed show. Simon Cowell said of the performance, "I like people who go out there and take a few risks, and it was unpredicatable and it worked."
Of course, there have been rumblings about whether David’s version was quite the lighting-bolt of originality that Lionel and the judges seem to believe. Fans of the band Incubus have pointed out that the Calabasus, California, group were doing a rocked-out take on the Motown smash as far back as 2003.

When actress Rashida Jones heard her good pal Nicole Richie was expecting her first baby, the Office star knew exactly what to get the mom-to-be.
“I’ve known Nicole since she was 3,” Rashida, who was there for Nicole’s Wizard of Oz-themed baby shower in November, tells OK!. “I got her a really cute diaper bag that my friend makes from the line Not Rational, and some maternity stuff.”
Rashida, who’s about to star in the new Fox series Unhitched, was thrilled that Nicole and her partner Joel Madden donated their baby shower gifts to young mothers in need through their recently formed Madden-Richie Foundation.
“When we were leaving the shower, there was one of those huge valets shipping out the gifts,” Rashida, 32, tells OK!. “It was cool.”
Both Rashida and Nicole are children of music legends — Nicole’s father is singer Lionel Richie and Rashida’s pop is award-winning producer and composer Quincy Jones, who also happens to be Nicole’s godfather.
And what about Nicole and Joel’s 2-month old baby girl, Harlow? Rashida says she’s "just the most perfect little thing!"
