Maggie Gyllenhaal swans into the New York Film Festival premiere of An Education held Monday at NYC’s Paris Theater wearing a strapless black pantsuit that shows off her toned shoulders. She greets two guests with kisses on the cheek, and gleefully strikes up conversations.
When opening remarks take place, she peers into the theater from her post in the hallway, and I catch a glimpse of her sparkling right-hand diamond ring.
The towering, blue-eyed beauty pumps her fist, and gives a supportive “woo-hoo” to cheer on husband Peter Sarsgaard, who stars in the film as a 30-something man attempting to seduce a 16-year-old girl away from her education and into his glitzy world of classical concerts, art auctions and late-night dinners.
Tonight, her only role is to be a loving wife. Read more »

Maggie Gyllenhaal & Peter Sarsgaard Wed
May 4th, 2009
Longtime couple Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard have gone that extra step and made their union official on paper: The two were married in Brindisi Italy on Saturday. Maggie’s famous bro Jake Gyllenhaal and his lady Reese Witherspoon were in attendance at the ceremony in a small chapel.
Peter’s rep tells OK!: "We are happy to confirm that Maggie and Peter were married on Saturday, May 2."
Maggie and Peter have been dating since 2002, and have a two-and-a-half year old daughter together, Ramona. The twosome announced their engagement in April 2006. They starred together in 2003 indie flick In God’s Hands. Peter was nominated for a Golden Globe in 2004 for Shattered Glass and also appeared alongside Maggie’s brother Jake in Jarhead.
Maggie is also an indie darling, starring in Donnie Darko, Sherrybaby and Secretary, as well as blockbuster Dark Knight.
Madonna Makes PETA’s Worst Dressed List
March 5th, 2009
PETA, (People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has just released it’s 2009 list of Worst Dressed celebrities and– surprise, surprise–Madonna has made the cut.
On it’s official website, the organization writes, "The masses have spoken! This year’s biggest fur offender–by a mile–is… Madonna! When you see Madonna in fur, you realize why nobody has copied her style since 1984. We know that she’s on the prowl for a young cub, but someone needs to tell Madge that wearing fur doesn’t make you a cougar."
Other stars who made the Worst Dressed list include Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, Kanye West, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Elizabeth Hurley.
Always known for going above and beyond when it comes to making a statement, PETA made an especially tough crack at the Olsen twins, saying, "Since fur adds 20 years and 20 pounds, maybe Mary Kate and Ashley think their matronly wardrobe will deflect the gossip about bulemia. Somewhere, someone is missing a matching pair of Bigfoot bobble head dolls."
Ouch!
Maggie Gyllenhaal Talks Motherhood
January 27th, 2009
Maggie Gyllenhaal stumps for Fisher-Price during the launch of their Precious Planet line held Tuesday at Central Park Zoo in NYC.
The animal-friendly line includes a high chair, gym, cradle swing, bouncer, Jumperoo, potty, tub and bedding featuring baby animals like monkeys, giraffes and polar bears.
The actress, 31, is on hand to make a $250,000 contribution to the Wildlife Conservation Society on behalf of the toy company.
“I had one of those portable Fisher-Price tape players, and I remember listening to Cyndi Lauper while I walked around the neighborhood, so I’m thrilled to join forces with them in presenting this generous donation to the Wildlife Conservation Society,” she says.
Being aware of the outdoors is something she encourages in her own family, which includes Ramona, 15 months, and fiancé of three years Peter Sarsgaard.
“I think especially in New York City, and Brooklyn, where I live, it’s very important to encourage children to learn about and be part of nature. It’s difficult to find that in the City.”
She continues, “I know from my own childhood that connecting with nature has changed the way I look at the world and what’s important to me, so I think it’s important to introduce kids to wildlife and animals, and show them how we can and must coexist. They are learning to respect the planet, which is incredibly important now.”
Giving daughter Ramona time to be a kid is a top priority for Maggie. She won’t allow her daughter to become a child actor.
“I don’t think children should be working,” she tells me. “It doesn’t make sense to me. But my child, when she grows up, can do whatever she wants. But not as a child, no. It’s fun to do it [say lines] once or twice, but then you have to do it ten more times and it’s work. I don’t think kids should be working.”
On the way out, I pick up the first gift bag my newborn niece will receive. It includes a Fisher-Price Stay-in-Place Sun Shade, Comfy Covers – cushioned seat belt covers, Bath Mirror and an adorable Precious Planet blanket. Aww!
One Year Without Heath
January 22nd, 2009
It’s hard to believe, but it’s a year today since Heath Ledger was found dead in his apartment.
Here, OK! looks back at that heartbreaking 12 months, and what has become of the people who loved him most.
The shocking news that the star of Brokeback Mountain and 10 Things I Hate About You had died, slowly began to seep out overnight on Jan 22 2008.
The next morning, a throng of reporters and stunned, mourning fans began to fill the street outside his SoHo bachelor pad — and watched the terrible spectacle of his 28-year-old body being carried out in a black bodybag.
As more details slowly began to emerge, it became clear out that there had been bizarre activities frantically taking place behind the closed doors of the fourth-floor home, which would sparked a scandal that would rumble on for months.
At around 2:45pm on Jan. 22, Heath’s masseuse found him unconscious in bed. But instead of calling 9-1-1, she twice dialed the cell of actress Mary-Kate Olsen, who he had reportedly been dating for several months.
The masseuse finally called for an ambulance and Mary-Kate, who was in L.A., sent her bodyguard to the apartment, who arrived at the same time as the paramedics.
At 3.36pm, Heath Ledger was pronounced dead.
Later that day on the morning of the Jan 23 on the other side of the world in Perth, Australia, his shell-shocked parents, Sally and Kim, and sister Kate, read a statement confirming Heath’s "tragic, untimely and accidental passing".
They called him, "a down to earth, generous, kind-hearted, life-loving and selfless individual who was extremely inspirational to many."
The family quickly arranged a memorial service for their only son, and on Jan 26, his friends — including ex-girlfriend Naomi Watts — gathered at Westwood Village Memorial Park to comfort each other.
Michelle didn’t attend, but on Feb 1, she gave her own statement via Heath’s publicist. "My heart is broken," she said.
"I am the mother of the most tender-hearted, high-spirited, beautiful little girl who is the spitting image of her father," Williams said in her statement.
"All that I can cling to is his presence inside her that reveals itself every day. His family and I watch Matilda as she whispers to trees, hugs animals, and takes steps two at a time and we know that he is with us still. She will be brought up with the best memories of him."
She then flew to Australia with Matilda in time for another memorial service on Feb. 9. After the ceremony, 50 mourners — including Michelle, Kim and Sally — ran into the ocean together, many of them fully dressed, at one of Heaths favorite places, Cottesloe Beach.
Meanwhile, the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Heath’s death was getting into full swing.
On Feb 6, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of New York said that, "Mr. Heath Ledger died as the result of acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam and doxylamine."
"We have concluded that the manner of death is accident, resulting from the abuse of prescription medications," it reported.
Months later, in August, a battle to get Mary-Kate Olsen to testify in the investigation made front-page news. It was revealed that federal investigators wanted to ask the Full House star what she knew about where he got hold of the prescription drugs he had taken.
But Mary Kate and her lawyers had been holding out, demanding a guarantee that she wouldn’t be prosecuted if she talked. At the same time they insisted that she knew nothing about where the drugs had come from.
Then, in a surprising twist, on Aug 6, the US Attorney’s Office suddenly canceled the probe, and told Mary Kate she wouldn’t have to be questioned.
As the police investigation came to an end, another legal battle simmered over Heath’s $20million estate.
Because his will had been written before he met Michelle, neither she, nor Matilda were mentioned, but left it all to his sisters and parents.
After his death, his father, Kim, vowed that Michelle and Matilda would be "taken care of".
Eventually, however, the family decided that the entire sum would go to his little girl.
In August, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law, Heath’s co-stars in Terry Gilliam’s fantasy The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus also touchingly decided to donated their paychecks from the movie to Matilda.
Although Michelle has continued to work and has fallen in love again, this time with movie director Spike Jonze, she has retreated to a quiet Brooklyn neighborhood where she can raise Matilda in peace, and try to get over Heath’s death.
"I wake up each day day in a slightly different place — grief is like a moving river," she told Newsweek recently.
"It’s a strange thing to say, because I’m at heart an optimistic person, but in some ways it gets worse. The more time that passes, the more you miss someone."
"Matilda never fully understood what happened when he died," a friend of Michelle’s recently told OK!. "It was heartbreaking when she asked for Daddy and Michelle had to explain that he wasn’t coming back."
"I want [Matilda] to have the plainest, simplest, most ordinary routine possible," Michelle said recently.
In a bitter-sweet moment, on Jan 11 Heath won a posthumous Golden Globe for Best Actor In A Supporting Role for his breath-taking Joker in The Dark Knight.
"For any of us lucky enough to work with him, he will never be forgotten," said the film’s director Chris Nolan, tearfully accepting the award on Heath’s behalf.
"Our movie is great. but he elected it to a completely different place," said Heath Ledger’s friend and Dark Knight co-star Maggie Gyllenhaal at the ceremony. "It’s hard to be that good in a movie that big."
Now Heath’s fans, friends and family will wait to see if he receives the ultimate tribute to his talent at the Academy Awards — after he received nomination for Best Actor In A Supporting role on Jan 22 2009 — and face their second year of life without Heath Andrew Ledger.
Jake’s Parents Broke, Need Bailout
November 25th, 2008
Jake Gyllenhaal and his sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal, may be famous actors with equally A-list squeezes, but it looks like their parents haven’t been reaping the benefits of their children’s success.
According to divorce documents obtained by TMZ, Stephen Gyllenhaal and Naomi Foner are in deep financial trouble. The couple, who separated last January, apparantly acquired some serious debt during the course of their marriage, including mortgage payments, home equity lines of credit against their two homes, several credit cards and "various outstanding loans."
Naomi, a screenwriter, says she had to take out a loan during the writer’s strike because she had no money coming in.
Gyllenhaal allegedly told Foner of their finances, "I have been clear that if worse comes to worse, I will let all of this collapse into ruin, just as I believe letting the markets crash and burn are the right approach."
Uh huh. How about just asking your kids for help?
