Colin Farrell, Jon Voight Tackle ‘Pride And Glory’

October 23rd, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

Colin Farrell is shockingly orange with long, stringy hair when I catch him during the Pride And Glory premiere held at AMC Lincoln Square in NYC.

The Irish actor is on hand to promote the police drama he stars in alongside Edward Norton and Jon Voight. Who is tougher – him or Edward Norton? “He is,” he sighs. “I’ll give it to him because of Fight Club.”

And, riffing on the movie’s tagline, what comes first: blood or loyalty?

“Sometimes one brings about the presence of the other,” Colin says. “That’s what it’s about - the difficulty sometimes in telling the truth and the pain that comes with that and understanding on your own. The loneliness, as well, in doing the right thing, especially in an institutional environment. It depends on the situation.”

Reporters crowd around Jon, who is pummeled with questions about estranged daughter Angelina Jolie, politics – and the movie. Would he like to film with Angelina? “Well, wouldn’t that be nice,” he laments. “I hear her film that opens the same day we do [Changeling] is great. I hear she’s wonderful in it.” Has he seen the twins she shares with Brad Pitt? “No, I haven’t,” he says. Will he see Angelina soon? “You can never tell. It sure looks good.” Is he proud of her? “Oh yeah. I’m very proud. Her brother and I are her biggest fans.” With his amazing career, is it hard to find time to spend with his grandkids? He winks, and reaches for the recorder.

Hey Lake Bell, what was it like working with Colin?

“He’s great. The entire cast is masterful actors. We had fun.”

Noah Emmerich
tells me Colin is the “sweetest, most kindest, most generous man,” and Manny Perez tells me “You read stuff about him that he’s a bad boy, and he’s not a bad boy. He’s a real guy. He’s all about the work and the craft and respects the craft.”

Jennifer Ehle, who is pregnant with her second child from hubby Michael Ryan, thinks Colin might make a decent boyfriend.

“He’s incredibly warm, incredibly kind, he’s funny, he’s charming in a very honest way. He came to the trailer and welcomed me on my first day, which is something I wouldn’t expect someone in his position to do. He’s very kind. I think kindness is underrated when looking for a partner.”

Catch Colin, Jon, Ed, Lake, Noah, Manny and Jennifer in Pride and Glory, which is in theaters tomorrow.

STARS REVEAL BACK-TO-SCHOOL MEMORIES

September 4th, 2007

Summer’s over, and now it’s time to hit the books.

What was the best thing about school for Kat DeLuna, 17? “The skating rink,” she tells me. “We used to always do parties and dance around before school, because after school there were no parties. You had to go and study.”

Cheetah Girl Adrienne Bailon, 23, always had a passion for fashion. “Sister Act came out when I went to public school, and I actually went and got my own version of the Catholic school uniform,” she tells me. “I remember Lauryn Hill had on Timberland boots with scrunchie socks with her little school girl outfit. I remember I wore that exact same thing. People in school were like ‘we’re all glad that we don’t have to wear uniforms, and this crazy girl is wearing a school uniform.’ It was pretty ridiculous. They were like ‘what’s wrong with her?’”

"This Is Why I’m Hot" rapper Mims longs for the scent of his school days. “The one thing I can remember about the first day of school is the way the air smelled,” the MTV Video Music Awards nominee tells me. “For some reason, the smell of the air is different on that day. It’s always damp. It’s a real crispy smell. I always gotta get up real early, polish my clothes, make sure I got my clothes all tight so when I go to school I’m looking good.”

Actor Manny Perez, 39, is glad he doesn’t have to go back. “When I came to the United States, I didn’t know English,” he tells me. “When my family moved to Providence, Rhode Island, we were the fourth Latino family there, and the second day, my teacher told me to go down to the principal’s office. I started crying like a little baby because I knew the principal was bad news. I started crying because I thought I was doing something wrong, and when I got down there I found out it was about getting my immune shots, and it had nothing to do with doing something wrong.”

STARS RISE ABOVE THEIR FIRST JOBS

September 3rd, 2007

In celebration of Labor Day, I took to the floor at the Illegal Tender premiere asking celebs for their first job experiences.

“My first job was actually working at a car wash and I did the cash register,” acclaimed director/producer John Singleton, who was the youngest director ever nominated for an Oscar when he helmed Boyz in the Hood at the age of 24, tells me. “Somebody tried to rob the store one time. I didn’t give them the money. I was twelve years old.”

"Whine Up" singer Kat DeLuna, 19, worked at Dunkin’ Donuts. “I served doughnuts; I ate doughnuts,” she recalls. “I was actually young getting a job, so it was cool. I loved blueberry doughnuts. It’s one of my favorites. [sings] Ahhhhh!”

Cheetah Girl Adrienne Bailon, 23, used the barter system. “I actually used to sweep in a beauty salon,” she tells me. “That way, I could get my hair washed and blown. It was a Dominican spa right near where I lived, and I became friends with the girl that used to work there. She was the daughter of the owner, and she would blow my hair. I would be like ‘look, check it out, I will sweep the floor at the end of the night, as long as you will give me a nice fresh blowout for the week.’ That was our tradeoff – I would sweep the floors and I would get my hair blown out. Every day I would come to school with some fabulous hair-do.”

"This Is Why I’m Hot" singer MIMS is glad he turned to hip-hop. “I worked in a hospital doing billing,” he tells me. “It was definitely boring. I sat in the office and made $6 or $7 an hour doing it. I couldn’t work for anybody after that, so I decided to become a musician and do hip-hop full time.”

Up-and-comer Manny Perez, 38, got all wet at his first job. “I was a bus boy in Rhode Island at a restaurant called Victoria House,” he tells me. “I was serving more water than anything. I was water here, water there, I was watered down. It was crazy.”

AUGUST 21

August 24th, 2007

Last night I went to the Illegal Tender premiere. We were crammed under the tent on the red carpet since it was sporadically raining outside. The girl next to me kept moving around, and I was like, aghh, we don’t have enough space for that! I was happy to see two of my fave roving red carpet reporters. There’s usually a lot of downtime before things start happening, so it’s a great time to catch up, but then, boom!, the party starts and the flashbulbs signal celeb after celeb. John Singleton, Kat DeLuna, MIMS and Cheetah Girl Adrienne Bailon were the big stars — good times. Christina Aguilera back in the day, gushed about her new doll. “My niece called me and said, ‘Auntie, I’m playing with your doll,’” she told OK!. “It actually looks very much like me. They got the feature I didn’t want them to capture. I’m like, ‘It has my nose! Why?’”
A photographer approached me asking if I knew who a “celebrity” was. Um, nope. It’s always a challenge identifying the fringe.
Speaking of fringe, it was great to see Manny Perez, who is in the movie. I was invited to his surprise party on Friday. I know him from El Cantante, but he actually has five films coming out in 2007. Whoop, whoop!
In the meantime, I got a frantic phone call from a colleague in search of Britney Spears’ label publicist. I leave my phone on silent till red carpet festivities are finished, so luckily she worked it out by the time I was able to make the call.
