Mario Batali’s Short, Sweet Text to Former Boss

March 20th, 2009

Mario Batali just needed three letters to tell ex-boss Marco Pierre White his reaction to the Brit chef’s new reality cooking competition, NBC’s The Chopping Block.

“He texted me and summed it up with one word: ‘Wow,’ Marco told OK! during a screening at NYC’s The Spotted Pig.

Batali and White have had a friendly rivalry since they worked together at the Six Bells pub in an exclusive neighborhood in London.

The same cannot be said of another famous TV chef — Hell’s Kitchen’s Gordon Ramsey.

The two had a falling out years ago after Gordon stole the reservations book from his own restaurant, then blamed it on Marco — all in an attempt to stop Marco replacing him as head chef!

Unsurprisingly, there was no message of congratulations from Gordon, Marco told us.

The last time Marco, 47, spoke to his old protége, “I said, Gordon, has someone stolen the bolts out of your neck?”

TV WEEKLY RECAP: One hot chef and a cool Housewife!

Sometimes in this business, all your best parties fall on one night.

So was the case for me on Wednesday.

I started off the night sipping spicy Chai latte at Tracey Stern’s new Upper Eastside SALONTEA TeaBar and sampling some of the same flavors Ugly Betty alum Lindsay Lohan stocks up on!

I was then off to catch the debut of The Chopping Block, starring my new fave chef Marco Pierre White, at a private screening party he threw inside of the exclusive third floor enclave of the Spotted Pig pub in NYC’s West Village.

We already know Marco loves sacking, so he was not amused when cousins Denise and Khoa Nguyen on the losing black team bowed out of the competition.

“I hate when people do my job for me,” he sneered.

He doesn’t have to tell me twice! The Chopping Block airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. on NBC.

It was then time to jet set over to Japonais restaurant for Skinnygirl Frangelinis and margaritas, courtesy of The Real Housewives of New York City’s Bethenny Frankel.

She hosted an after-party for her “Naturally Thin” book launch inside the mammoth space.

Bethenny was just on The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet dismissing rumors she and A-Rod are a couple.

But it is 100 percent true she’s dating another man named Jason!

“He’s beyond gorgeous,” Bethenny told me of the modelesque pharmaceutical rep she had draped over her arm.

“He’s the third Jason I’ve dated since the original Jason. The only Jason I haven’t dated is the one from Friday the 13th, but everyone says he’s bad news.”

Hey, when you’re desperate for a date…

The Real Housewives of New York City airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on Bravo.

The Chopping Block’s Marco Pierre White Keeps Quiet!

March 11th, 2009

Forget everything you’ve read about celebrity chef Marco Pierre White, who debuts tonight on The Chopping Block.

Sure he’s billed as the guy who made Hell’s Kitchen star and former mentee Gordon Ramsay cry.

"He made himself cry," Marco deadpans.

But I’m convinced Britain’s newest culinary import is nothing but a softie.

What other 6′3" restaurant mogul would get down on his knees (literally!) to make a 5′ journalist feel right at ease?

Those expecting to see Marco, who judges as eight couples compete for the chance to start their own restaurant, lose his temper on the new competition series, think again.

"I’m not there to scream, to shout or to swear. I don’t think it’s necessary," he shared during a chat inside the OK! office.

"They have their challenges. I’m just there to guide them, to be their friend – and to sack them."

Marco’s secret ingredient when giving the pink slip to losing contestants? The silent treatment!

"Sometimes I say, ‘I’m going for walk around the block, I’ll be back in 15 minutes and I’ll give you my decision,’" he revealed.

"Then I just sit down, look at them and say nothing. Or I ask them what happened while I was away."

Heartless? Nah.

"Sometimes I sack them right away to put them out of their misery, and the pain is not prolonged anymore," he said.

See?

Marco shared his vision for The Chopping Block’s winner in these tough economic times.

"Open a little sandwich shop on the beach somewhere for $10,000 and have $240,000 working capital," he said with a laugh.

"It’s genius. If they go bust after a week, they’ve got the cash."

Being a world-class chef, Marco’s got the likes of fellow food connoisseurs Mario Batali and Anthony Bourdain on speed dial.

But he stressed he didn’t get any advice from them on winning over the American viewing audience.

"I don’t want to be confused by others. I just do my job, as I always have. My friends are not consultants," he explained.

"I’m just a bloke from England who was brought to America to sack a few people," he continued.

"It’s quite nice sacking. I kind of enjoyed it."

Celebrity Apprentice’s Donald Trump would be proud.

The Chopping Block premieres Wednesday at 8 p.m. on NBC.
