July 13th, 2009 / Author: Valerie Nome

box eight fashion week 150309Margaret Cho stars in Lifetime’s Drop Dead Diva, playing the assistant to a brilliant, thoughtful, plus-size attorney who resurfaces when a shallow model dies. While she happily tells me she just ate a McDonald’s Egg McMuffin balanced on the steering wheel of her car, the comedienne didn’t always celebrate the body nature gave her.

The actress, 40, who is married to artist/writer Al Ridenour, checks in from Peachtree City, Georgia, to talk body image after decades of struggling with weight issues. At last, she is finally satisfied with the numbers on the scale. Read more »

Last Word with Margaret Cho

Margaret Cho THE COMEDIAN — NOW STARRING IN LIFETIME’S DROP DEAD DIVA — SHARES HER LASTING IMPRESSIONS

LAST COMPLIMENT I RECEIVED
That my smile was like a sunrise.

LAST TIME I LIED
On a plane to Cape Cod. You know how you have to tell your weight when you get on those small planes? I may have left off a few pounds. So if we crashed, it would’ve been my fault.

LAST PERSON WHO SAW ME NAKED
Probably my husband [artist Al Ridenour] but, you know, when you’re married that long you don’t even register nudity anymore.

Margaret Cho Pens Scathing Ditty to Miley

February 11th, 2009

Margaret Cho is lashing out at Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus for–what else– the photo showing the teen slanting her eyes in a seeming attempt to mock Asian people.

On Wednesday, Cho took to her blog, where she wrote a not-so-nice song about Miley, explaining, "I am so upset by Miley Cyrus, I think it warrants a song."

The little ditty goes:

"Miley Cyrus made some chinky eyes. Standing behind an Asian guy. I don’t know if this should fly. As if there wasn’t enough to despise. I wasn’t necessarily a fan of
Her, her dad, or Hannah Montana. I tend to prefer the songs of Rihanna. Racism against Asians is simply bananas! Oh Miley! Chinky eyes make you look wily prejudice isn’t thought of so highly it doesn’t make us all smiley. Why is there nothing that Asians can do? To make fun of other races as easily as you. Why isn’t racism against Asians taboo? Why are we always so racially screwed! All you have to do is pull at your face. To make your eyelids resemble our race. This kind of joke has no proper place. Miley Cyrus is a disgrace!"

Yikes!

SHOULD YOU WATCH?: The Cho Show

August 21st, 2008

Margaret Cho is not a shy woman.

Believe us when we say the phrase "too much information" means absolutely nothing to her.

In a darkened corner of a party at New York City’s Le Royale to celebrate the launch of her new VH1 series, The Cho Show, the comedian left OK!’s Oliver Coleman blushing with, em, vivid tales of cosmetic procedures we never knew existed (and still aren’t sure we believe are possible!).

On the show, which Margaret says is a blend of a reality show and a sitcom, she promised us she’s even more unabashed, even treating the viewing public to a nice long close up of a certain body part that even she had never seen before.

So it’s all the more sweet when the San Fransisco native tells us there’s one thing she won’t share with the cameras, her husband, Al Ridenour.

He’s not in the show at all, we asked (while desperately trying to put the whole bleaching thing out of our minds!).

"No," said Margaret, "because I want to stay married."

Apparently the couple didn’t want to run the risk of their marriage to become another victim of reality TV,  a la Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson of The Newlyweds failed fame.

"I just love him, so I don’t want to have to put anybody through that," Margaret told us.

"He’s not an actor, he’s not an on-camera person, he’s a visual artist, sculptor, painter and a filmmaker, and he’s not comfortable in front of the camera. I don’t want to put our relationship under that kind of scrutiny. That to me is very awkward."

But her long-suffering mom and dad are another matter altogether.

For the Korean-American, who has regaled her stand-up audiences with tales of Mr. and Mrs. Cho for years, they were just too funny to leave out, whether they liked it or not!

"Well, I told them they had to do it because it was either this or assisted living, and they said, ‘alright’," Margaret declared.

"They have to do everything I say now, because they’re at the age now where they need me. I have a lot of leverage."

She may be joking.

The Cho Show premieres on Thursday, Aug. 21 at 11 p.m. on VH1.

You’ve been warned.

Welcome to The Cho Show!

July 11th, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

Margaret Cho admits her parents are putting the pressure on her to have a family.

"They are constantly on me about having children," the comic tells OK!.  "That’s one of our main arguments, that’s what we discuss or fight about.  But what’s great is that i have my assistant, Selena Luna, and I just pretend she’s my daughter."

OK! caught up with Cho at the Television Critics’ Association gathering in Beverly Hills on Wednesday, where she was eager to talk about her new reality TV show, The Cho Show, which follows Margaret’s wacky life and features her personal assistant Luna, who is a little person, and her folks.  Cho’s husband won’t be on the show because "he’s not a performer.  I want to keep that separate," she says.

The outrageous comedienne, who married Al Ridenour in 2003, turns 40 in December.  She tells OK! that age doesn’t really bother her.  Her upcoming birthday  is, on the other hand, a big deal to her parents, who freely speak their mind on the show when it comes to their daughter starting a family.

"They just really want grandkids," Margaret says.  "I understand that but I don’t know if that’s going to happen.  I might at some point.  That’s certainly something I would like to do–but maybe not for a while. I don’t really think too much about age."

The funny girl, who has had to put up with comments about her weight from execs in the past, says her new reality show allows her to be herself.

"It was really hurtful," she recalls about dealing with weight remarks in the past.  "It was really hard at the time but now I’m excited.  I’m so proud of this show.  It’s a totally different world."
