OK! Interview: Melissa Joan Hart

April 17th, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

The actress, 33, who stars in ABC Family’s My Fake Fiance? opens up about real life with rocker hubby Mark Wilkerson, 32, and sons Mason, 3, and Braydon, 13 months.

She tells OK!, “We’re like a traveling circus.”

OK!: Do you get any date nights with Mark?

Mainly our date nights are 8 p.m., when the kids are in bed, then we sort of cuddle up and watch TV.  What we’ve been doing lately, a new little trick, we’ve been meeting up at Starbucks. We’ll text each other real quick — "want to meet at Starbucks?" We have a little afternoon secret meeting at Starbucks that ends up being so much fun.

OK!: What have you learned about parenting?

I’ve worked since I was four; I’ve had every kind of job; I’ve worked every kind of hours in different conditions and cities and places and I would say being a mom is the hardest job there is.

OK!: Do you have any advice for moms-to-be?

See movies, read books and sleep, because you’ll never do those things again.

OK!: Do you want to have more children?

Only because I want to try for a girl and if we don’t have a girl, I’ll try again for a girl but if we do have a girl, I’ll try again for a sister.

My Fake Fiance? premieres on April 19.

OK! Interview: Melissa Joan Hart

January 2nd, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

Melissa Joan Hart’s schedule has been more than packed lately – in addition to filming movies like Nine Dead and producing another for ABC Family, the Sabrina the Teenage Witch star is also a mom to boys Mason, 3, and Brady, 9 months. OK! caught up with the busy mom to get the latest on her growing family and life as a Hollywood mama.

OK!: What’s the latest with baby Brady?

A: He’s just such a little crazy man, really jealous of his brother’s toys all of a sudden this morning. His dad totally observed it. Mark [Wilkerson] noticed he had to get on Brady for the first time this morning — and Brady turns nine months in two days so all of a sudden, he woke up and is like a different person.  He’s like super jealous about toys and situations like that and if Mason takes away something from him, he’s very aware of it.

OK!: What kind of personality are you seeing coming out of him now?

Brady’s kind of sensitive. Mason’s much more of a tough guy. Mason is a daddy’s boy who likes to run around and get beat up. Brady’s a lot more delicate — not delicate, but like, he’s a mama’s boy. He likes to be held and he’ll play by himself for a good little bit of time but not a lot. Mason loves to play by himself, he’s very independent.

OK!: Any New Year’s resolutions for yourself and the family?

I haven’t really thought of any New Year’s resolutions yet.  I’ve been so busy! I think we’re moving back east [to the New York area] so I think my resolution would just be to find a great home for my family, just to find a good city, a good community, a great house with good schools so we can plant some roots and watch them grow.

OK!: Why are you leaving L.A.?

I’ve always pictured myself moving back there. My move here was always temporary and it lasted 13 years. The number one thing for my husband is traffic and the number one thing for both of us is seasons. We really want seasons. We want our boys to play in the snow and not to have to explain once a year what rain is.

Melissa Joan Hart’s ‘Bossy’ Parenting Advice For Co-Star

October 20th, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

Their Sabrina, The Teenage Witch days ended in 2003, but mom-of-two Melissa Joan Hart, 32, still has her former co-star Caroline Rhea under her spell.

“She’s so bossy!," Caroline, 44, who played Sabrina’s aunt Hilda on the show, and who is expecting a daughter, tells OK!.

“She literally said, ‘I cannot wait to boss you about this baby,’" she said at a Project A.L.S. event in NYC.

"’I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’m new.’ It is ironic that she’s younger than me.”

Caroline and long-term boyfriend and former co-host of The Biggest Loser, Costaki Economopoulos, have said that they are expecting their first baby this month.

Experienced mom Melissa, meanwhile, has two boys, Mason, 2, and Braydon, eight months, with her musician husband, Mark Wilkerson.

OK! Interview: Melissa Joan Hart

July 17th, 2008

Melissa Joan Hart is living a pretty charmed life — happily married, to Course of Nature rocker Mark Wilkerson, with two boys, Mason, 2, and newborn Brady, and a pretty busy career. If that’s not enough, the former Sabrina, the Teenage Witch star is now just a mere five pounds from her pre-pregnancy weight four months after giving birth to Brady. Now, the newly svelte 32-year-old reveals to OK! how she’s getting her body back and which celebrity’s body she covets!

You look great! How long have you been working out?
Its been just over three months. Ive been working hard. I really wanted it this time. Last time I didnt care if I lost the weight. This time, I felt better. I was thinner during the pregnancy. I had a natural delivery. I dont know if because he was my second or because he was a natural delivery, but I just felt so much better right away.

What have you been doing to get back into shape?

I have been working out at Pulse [Fitness Studio]. I go three days a week, because I’m also breastfeeding. So there’s a really fine balance of being a good mom, and breastfeeding my child and making sure he’s as healthy as can be, and losing the weight for me and my career and my husband!

What’s your workout like?

My trainer is a good friend, but he’s an amazing trainer, and he really pushes me. Even when I was like, "I don’t want to be pushed too much. I’m not going to come back if you keep pushing me, he pushed me." He loves treadmill stuff, but I don’t like treadmill, so he had me do spinning about 30 minutes a day, and then for [another] 30 minutes, we’d do some floor exercises and abs and stuff. And, of course, it took me a while to get started on the abs.

How about your diet? Have you made any changes?
I was on this Fresh Mommies Delivery for a while, but I can only do that for so long. I just feel like when you dont get to choose your food for the day, its a little difficult. So I would cheat a lot.

What are the bad foods you’ve refused to give up?
What I will allow myself is ice cream and chips and guacamole. Those are the things that I cannot put a restriction on myself with, because if I cut those out I just feel angry [laughs]. So I allow myself those two things twice a week. But it depends on what my goal is. This week I had a goal. Now, I’m going off to shoot a movie, so I really want to look good for that. But the thing is I’m also breastfeeding. That’s an important thing to include here, because I’m at my weight goal for right now. Im not looking to get super skinny right now because I can’t. If I do that I’ll lose my milk, and I don’t want that for my son. So I am where I want to be right now until I’m done breastfeeding. I’ll keep losing. My body will just naturally losing weight, and Ill keep working out and eating well.

What are your current diet rules?
I have a nutritionist and stuff, so I really try to watch [what I eat]. I have certain rules for myself, so no refined sugars. I try to stay away from white starches — not carbs, necessarily, because I’ll eat pitas and corn tortillas, that kind of thing. But I try to avoid regular breads and pastas — not really pastas, but I try not to eat it too often. I try to just make sure I have protein with every meal.

How much extra weight did you put on when you were pregnant?
I probably put on about 35 pounds. Maybe by the end of it, it was close to 40. Whereas with Mason, my first pregnancy, I put on like 55. So it was a big difference.

How much do you have left to lose?
I’m about five [pounds] off from where I started. But I want to drop another 10. So I have 10 more pounds, and I’ll do that over the rest of the year. But see, weight’s tricky too, because I’m putting on muscle. When I had Mason, I was the lightest weight I’ve ever been, but I wasn’t working out. So I looked skinny, and the scale was reading skinny, but I had no muscle tone to me. This time I want to have muscles, so I’m probably going to weight a little more than I did.

Did you go through stages of feeling "unsexy" while you were carrying the baby weight?
Oh god, I did not like being pregnant. I was just reading a magazine where there were a group of celebrities that loved being pregnant, so they never wanted to stop. And then there was a group of women that were just like, I hated it. And I just hated it.

Why did you hate it?
I think it might be because my mom enjoyed it so much that I thought it was going to be such a fun experience. My whole life I said, I can’t wait to be pregnant. I thought that would feel so feminine and beautiful and wonderful and I could eat whatever I wanted and Id enjoy it. It is so uncomfortable and you just feel so out of sorts. I don’t know if it’s because my mom set me up to think it was going to be this most wonderful [experience]. She loved being pregnant. She was pregnant seven times. Thats almost seven years of your life! And that’s before she was 40. That’s a large chunk of your life. And then seven years of breastfeeding too. I was like, Wow, how did she do that? It’s not for me. I mean, I love being a mom, but I don’t like being pregnant. I did enjoy this pregnancy more because I didn’t freak out as much.

Do you prefer having curves or being skinny?

I think everyone wants to be skinny. That tends to be what society draws us to. But I’ve got thighs on me and I’ve got hips. I used to have boobs [laughs], and I do when I’m pregnant or breastfeeding. But I like curvy. Ive always liked my butt. I have a bubble butt, and Ive always liked that.

Is there a celebrity’s body you really admire?
The woman who plays Dr. Cuddy [Lisa Edelstein] on House. She has such a kickin’ body. Shes kind of built like Sarah Jessica Parker. She has great boobs, flat belly, great butt, hips. She wears those pencil skirts that are so flattering. I guess Sarah Jessica Parkers body is pretty solid. I like that. I dont think Ill ever be that hard. I think Im definitely be softer, and Im not as disciplined. But shes got a pretty rockin’ body!

How is motherhood the second time around?
I’m sad for the phases as they leave, whereas before I was looking forward to what comes next. He outgrew his newborn diapers, and now he’s about to outgrow his number ones. I’m so sad! But with Mason I’m like, "Hurry, potty train!" But with Brady I’m like, "Dont get bigger, stay small!" Im just so enjoying his little moments.

What characteristics are your boys showing?
Brady is just a little smiley happy angel. I call him my little love bug. And Mason is a complete crazy man! I call him my monkey. Hes so into jumping and running around in circles. I feel like he’s a little OCD right now, because he repeats patterns. If he’s in the pool, he has to go all the way around the pool, get out run over kiss somebody, and put his head under the waterfall. Everything he does when he plays its like circles or patterns. And I think its because our lives are so chaotic. No day is the same.

How many more children do you want to have?
I would like to have two more later in my thirties. I’d like to have two little girls, because I’d like to have a girl, and I’d like for her to have a sister. It’s so funny, because every time I do an interview and someone asks me that, it always comes off sounding like I’m desperate to have one right away. But I’m not. I’m totally happy with my two little monkeys!

Melissa Joan Hart’s Post-Baby Body

July 17th, 2008

OK! Interview: Melissa Joan Hart

April 12th, 2008

There’s no doubt about it — Melissa Joan Hart is absolutely bewitched by her two sons! The former Sabrina, the Teenage Witch star and her Course of Nature husband Mark Wilkerson welcomed their second child, Braydon "Brady" Hart, on March 12, and life can’t get any better. "I’m so in love," she tells OK!. "I have these three amazing boys in my life — so handsome and fun!" Even more amazing — dropping nearly half of her pregnancy weight in just three weeks. While it took Melissa, who turns 32 on April 18, 10 months to lose the 55 lbs. she put on while pregnant with first son Mason, now 2, she’s already lost 15 of the 35 lbs. she put on with Brady. The actress opens up to OK! about shedding those pounds, her hypno-birth and why sitcoms are the ideal shows for working moms.

You just gave birth a month ago. How are you feeling?

My recovery was so much better this time around. I did the birth drug-free and I’m not sure if it is because I did it drug-free or because he was my second baby, but I am up and about much easier this time. Last time I was unable to get out of bed for about eight weeks! Both pregnancies were traumatizing. I’ve just realized there is no way to bring a baby into the world and have it not be a traumatic experience. After both all I could say was “intense.” That is really the only word that sums it up! It’s just a difficult thing to do.

What were the differences in your pregnancies?

There were big differences. I think the only thing the two pregnancies had in common is they took us completely by surprise. First time around, I was so scared by everything and was so inconvenienced. I didn’t really know how to picture a baby inside me. I only saw the outward things. I was fat, I couldn’t move the way I wanted to, I had heartburn, my feet hurt, it was very awkward. I was so scared and so I just laid in bed and ate a lot. The second time, I was chasing a 2-year-old all over the place, lifting 30 lb. Mason and carrying him around and I was working and trying to hide it from the industry for the first trimester. Sucking it in and trying to eat really healthy so I didn’t gain too much in the first 20 weeks really made a difference this whole pregnancy.

What was the difference in the weight gain?
I gained 20 less pounds — the first pregnancy I gained 55 pounds and the second pregnancy only 35 — and I knew what to expect a little bit more. We had all the gear already. We didn’t have to do any of that legwork the second time around. I also worked out all the way through this pregnancy. The first one, the only exercise I got was walking down to get myself a bagel around the corner! This time I did Pilates until the last two weeks of my pregnancy.

Were you nervous to gain weight?
I was extremely nervous about the weight because I was due in the middle of pilot season and here I am trying to get a new show on the air. I was also doing this movie (Holiday in Handcuffs, ABC Family’s highest-rated original telecast ever) and truthfully, I have heard of people being fired from projects before for getting pregnant and I was really worried. Now, I’m back in action — I’m ready to work. I can put on the Spanx. I’ve got 20 more pounds to lose but I’m working hard towards that and I’m not worried.

How long did it take you to lose the weight last time?

About 10 months. It took me awhile since I got off to such a rough start. I kicked it off with a two-week fast. And then having a young kid, you only get to sit down and eat for so long so my portions just got smaller by default. You really have to eat quick!

What is your workout plan this time?
I’m creating a workout plan with my trainer, Mark Harari, at Pulse Fitness Studio. We’re trying to balance how much I hate cardio with the things I enjoy a bit more! I really want to focus on muscle tone. Last time I lost so much weight chasing after Mason but I didn’t have any sort of definition. It is all really a matter of being careful with breastfeeding as well — I need to make sure I’m eating enough and not working out too much so I can still be healthy enough to breastfeed.

Why did you decide to do the Fresh Mommy diet?
I was really interested in the program because all of the meals are balanced to give mommies what they need while they are breastfeeding. I think a lot of post-pregnancy diet plans are really focused on losing the weight but this keeps my first priority straight — being able to stay healthy enough to breastfeed my baby. I have been eating a lot of cupcakes and things though so I am a little nervous to make this switch to salads and healthy things! (laughs). The delivery comes once a day — three meals, three snacks and a small dessert — so everything is set for the day. So far it has been really tasty and I’ve had several friends just rave about it.

How did you decide on doing a drug-free birth?
My friend Kellie Martin is the one who introduced me to the whole hypno-birthing idea. It is a special way of getting through a pregnancy without an epidural or inducing. She hiked every day of her pregnancy so we hiked Fryman Canyon together during my pregnancy. My friends were big inspirations to me. I just kept thinking, "If she could do it, I can do it!" I’m very proud that I was able to get through it but it was extremely difficult. I’m not sure I’d want to do it again!

Let’s talk about your family.
I’m so in love — I had no idea I could love more and with Brady, I am able to love even more. I have these three amazing boys in my life — so handsome and fun!

What is Mark like?

I have this wonderful, handsome husband who is a really amazing father. My husband is a man’s man. I’ve never seen straight men have a man crush the way they do on my husband. They will constantly say, “Will you have your husband call me?” He is up every morning at six with Mason, makes breakfast, makes me breakfast for whenever I get up — the dogs are fed, the pots are clean. He really takes care of things. I never expected to have this much help.

So he’s a really hands-on father?

He wouldn’t read any of the daddy books or anything. I’m the oldest of seven, he’s the youngest of three. And somehow, he picked it all up just like that. He’s just so innate. Go figure!

How are Mason and Brady getting along?

I just cried when Mason walked into the delivery room. The moment Brady was born I was just dying for them to meet each other. It was so great to say, “This is your brother!” It was so wonderful for Brady to finally be here and for Mason to finally understand all the things we had been talking to him about. Now he’s a big brother and he gets it.

How did you decide on the names?
With Mason, we were really decided. We were down to Mason and Desi and then my good friend Jaime Pressly named her child Dezi and we decided not to use it even though she said it was okay. So Mason it was. With Brady, we had about six different names and then we’d throw another one into the rotation every couple of weeks. It was finally a combination of Braedin, a name I loved and Braylin, a football player Mark loved. So Braydon it is but we call him Brady.

Do you want more kids?
I want to give these two some attention and some time. I would love more kids though — I’d love two little sisters for these guys. I want to wait until my late thirties though. Mark would probably like to stop at these two or maybe three but I came from a big family so I would love four. I’m not sure I want two more births though so we may have to adopt at one point! I need some more time to forget this experience though. I think you just go, "Okay, this is going to be rough for about 24 more hours and then I’ll be okay!"

Mason is almost as old as you were when you started your career in entertainment. What if he wants to follow in your footsteps?

I’d say that’s fine, but I always want to stress education with them. He would need to finish high school and at least attempt college. I wouldn’t want to be a hypocrite (Melissa dropped out of NYU before finishing her degree) but I would want them to at least give their education a shot.

What’s the next step for you career-wise?

My goal is to have another show. I’d love to have a sitcom. That is the best schedule in the business for a mom. I think I’m a little spoiled after producing my own show. After having a say in who gets cast, what the music is, what I wear, it would be hard not to have any input. But if the right project came along, I would go with it. I just want to do something really funny because there is nothing really funny on TV right now. Mark and I are still watching reruns of Seinfeld and Friends because we can’t find anything funny anymore. I love The New Adventures of Old Christine but it looks like that might be gone soon. You’re not looking forward to anything right now. There needs to be a renaissance on television and I’d love to be a part of it. What I’ve really discovered about my career is that I have the greatest fans — people are constantly writing to ask when I’m going to do something again.

Melissa Joan Hart Has a Baby Boy

March 13th, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

And a baby makes four for Melissa Joan Hart and Mark Wilkerson.

The actress and her rock star husband welcomed their second child together on March 12, a boy named Braydon Hart Wilkerson.

Their son Mason is two years old.

Although the couple had planned on having another baby, Braydon came a little sooner than imagined and the 31-year-old former Sabrina, the Teenage Witch star admitted she wasn’t completely excited when she learned of her pregnancy at first.

"I was thinking I won’t get to snowboard this season, and now I gotta fight the weight thing again, the indigestion and the feet hurting," she said.

But Mark, 30, who’s the lead singer of Course of Nature, made things a lot easier for Melissa.

“When it comes to the baby, he does everything from the cooking to bath time, to putting Mason down for nap," she told OK!. "That is so priceless to me.”
