Cover Story: Matilda’s Life Without Daddy

The morning of Dec. 21, Michelle Williams, 28, and her 3-year-old daughter Matilda Rose, left their moss-green Brooklyn row house for the pink-toned Dashing Diva nail salon. Exuberantly, Matilda raced ahead of her mom, bounding through the snow that cloaked their Boerum Hill neighborhood. The pair enjoyed matching mani-pedis in time for the holidays.

"Matilda’s a really upbeat kid who giggles all the time," Michelle’s long-time friend tells OK!. "That’s the one thing Michelle says will make her smile no matter what — hearing her daughter laugh."

But nearly one year ago on Jan. 22, there were only tears, as police carried the lifeless body of Heath Ledger, William’s former fiance and Matilda’s daddy, from a SoHo loft. The actor, 28, was the victim of an accidental overdose from prescription medications.

Heath delighted in his daughter Matilda, who inherited her father’s penetrating gaze and dark eyes, and whose name he had tattooed on his stomach.

"Matilda never really understood what happened when he died," a friend tells OK!. "It was heartbreaking when she asked for daddy and Michelle had to explain that he wasn’t coming back."

Now, one year later, Michelle is still trying to find happiness for herself and Matilda. She is steadily working and has begun a quiet romance with film director Spike Jonze.

"Things are getting easier, little by little, day by day," her friends tell OK!. "Slowly she’s come back from the shock and heartbreak."

Denied: No Love Child for Heath Ledger

Earlier this week, a report in an Australian newspaper claimed that Heath Ledger may have fathered a love child when he was 17 with a 25-year-old woman.

 

But it seems that the rumor was nothing more than a rumor. The unnamed woman’s husband said it is in no way true and the couple are even willing to submit their daughter for a DNA test.

 

The man said, "The whole thing with Ledger being the father is not true. No way. No can be. We knew it would flare up and that is the point of my talking and the simple thing is we will do a DNA test. I’m the stepdad, but there’s nothing to hide and if I asked the mother I’m sure that she wouldn’t mind having a DNA test."

 

"I’m not answering anything," added the woman. "I think it’s very, very rude that I’m being posed all of this. I really do. I can’t talk about anything. There’s no background, there’s no grounds, there’s no nothing."

 

Heath has one daughter, 2-year-old Matilda Rose, with former flame, actress Michelle Williams who is currently set to star in the new Martin Scorsese flick, Shutter Island. Tomorrow would have been Heath’s 29th birthday.

Rumor Mill: Heath Ledger Fathered a Love Child

Since Heath Ledger’s untimely passing on January 22, there have been many twists in the tale that was his life. That latest of which is that Heath may have fathered a child when he was 17.

 

Sydney’s Daily Telegraph reports that when Heath was in school, he carried on an affair with a 25-year-old woman. Shortly after the affair ended, the woman found out she was pregnant and then gave birth to a little girl. And despite the fact that she was living with another man at the time, Heath’s uncle Hadyn claims, "There is a very real possibility that Heath was the father."

 

Heath has a two-year-old daughter, Matilda Rose, with actress Michelle Williams. Although neither Michelle nor Matilda were mentioned in his will (it hadn’t been updated since 2003), his family has vowed to care for them.

 

Heath died of an accidental overdose in his SoHo apartment in New York City. This Friday, April 4, would have been the actor’s 29th birthday.

Heath Ledger’s Funeral Plans Remain a Mystery

There are several different theories circulating about where Heath Ledger’s body is, where his funeral was/will be held and where he is likely to be buried. The fact is, no one knows.

A memorial service is rumored to be taking place this weekend in Los Angeles, according to Reuters. "I understand it’s proposed there will be a public memorial service in Los Angeles later this week," said Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith, who added that Australian Consular officials have offered to help the Ledger family repatriate the body.

 

No further details regarding the funeral have been made available. Ledger’s publicist, Mara Buxbaum, said funeral arrangements ”will continue to be kept private at the family’s request.”

 

What we do know is that Ledger’s body was taken in a plain coffin from a N.Y. funeral home on Friday and driven away in a black hearse (watch video here). The actor’s family was expected to arrive today from Australia for a private viewing and possibly a service in N.Y., but OK! has since learned that no such viewing was on the funeral home’s schedule, and the family was not seen anywhere near the funeral parlor.

 

Since his death on Tuesday, New Yorkers have gathered at Ledger’s Manhattan apartment to pay tribute to the actor, creating a makeshift memorial on the front steps of his building. One day after his body was discovered, bouquets of flowers had grown to over 100, not to mention candles, homemade signs, cards and pictures.

 

And outside the Brooklyn home he once shared with former girlfriend Michelle Williams, fans placed flowers near a block of cement bearing the name of Ledger’s daughter Matilda Rose. Ledger and Williams split up last year but the actor continued to be an active force in his 2-year-old daughter’s life.

 

Close friend and model Sophie Ward, whose supermodel sister Gemma Ward was romantically linked to Ledger, told Australian media that Ledger was edgy and anxious during his Christmas holidays in Perth about not seeing his daughter.

"He was clean and wasn’t drinking any alcohol or taking drugs," Ward told the West Australian newspaper on Thursday.

 

Ledger is expected to be buried in his native Perth, Australia.
