Watch Out, Matt Lauer Crossing!

March 26th, 2009

Lest you think there’s any bad blood between competing morning shows Today (NBC) and Good Morning America (CBS), think again: After Today host Matt Lauer got into a biking accident with a deer over the weekend and injured his arm, his rivals at GMA sent over a little token of their affection.

A production assistant from ABC came over with a "Matt X-Ing" bright yellow sign to warn any possible pedestrians off the road when Matt’s around.

Today Show Hosts in Bike Accident

March 23rd, 2009

Looks like Meredith Vieira will be without her right hand man on Today for a little bit, as she and co-host Matt Lauer were involved in a biking accident over the weekend, leaving Matt with a dislocated shoulder.

"He was riding his bike over the weekend and he had a run-in with a deer," joked Meredith, adding that Matt still had his sense of humor about the run-in on Long Island.

He quipped via email that  “the deer was hired by the competition.”

“I’d hire the deer — but just to graze him,”  Meredith joked back to fill-in cohost Lester Holt.

Michael Phelps Calls Pot Photo “Bad Mistake”

March 12th, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

Michael Phelps is speaking up about that infamous photo of him "allegedly" smoking marijuana.

In an interview with The Today Show’s Matt Lauer airing March 13 and March 15, Phelps admits that what he did was "bad judgement" and "a mistake."

"It was– really, you know, the people I hurt, you know, is my family, clearly. My friends," he says.  "The close people around me.  And  most importantly, the fans.  And– and, you know, I realize that that hurt a lot of people."

When asked to recall the events leading up to the photo being taken Phelps says, "I mean, we were just celebrating, honestly.  And– you know, there was probably two or three people there I didn’t know.  It was a very small group.  Six or seven people probably total in the whole house.  Like nothing major.  You know, not like a giant college house party.  It was nothing like that.  It was just a small group and we were just sitting around and celebrating."

Phelps says he found out about the photo around the same time that the rest of America did. But he explains that while he knows he made a mistake, it wasn’t the handful of lost endorsements that first caused him the biggest worry.

"It’s not about money to me.  So, you know, the — the contract side of things, yeah, I was disappointed," he says. "But, you know, I think the biggest thing is– is who I hurt the most.  Like, if I lost money, okay.  It’s not an issue with me."

In the age of camera phones and the readily accessible internet, did Michael ever think that maybe someone at the party might snap a picture and take advantage of the situation?

"I trusted my friends who were there about who they were," he says. "And clearly they weren’t trusted people… Sometimes you learn the hard way."

Matt Lauer to Interview President Obama

January 26th, 2009

A chat with President Barack Obama can’t be easy to get these days, but NBC’s Matt Lauer has accomplished just that, nabbing the new commander-in-chief for an interview right before the Super Bowl on Feb. 1.

The Today show host’s talk with Obama will air live from the White House during NBC’s pre-game coverage of the Super Bowl, with additional footage airing on Feb. 2 during Today.

Matt’s chat with the prez will be the first televised interview from the White House since the Jan. 20 inauguration of the 44th president. And if the audience for past interviews featuring Obama is any indication, this one will be watched by millions as well.

Tom Cruise: “I Could Have Handled That Better”

December 15th, 2008

More than three years after their now-infamous verbal sparring match on The Today Show, Tom Cruise and Matt Lauer played nice during their interview on Monday morning.

"This is not Rocky II," Matt said about the much-hyped one-on-one. "This is not a rematch."

If anything, Tom’s mood during Monday’s live interview was apologetic. "I went back and I looked at it," he said of the June 2005 face-off that saw the Oscar-nominated star launching into an anti-psychiatry rant on the hit morning show. "After looking at it, I really thought… you know, it’s not what I had intended… In looking at myself, you know, that came across as arrogant."

Tom later added, "That’s one of those things you go, ‘Okay, I could have absolutely handled that better.’"

However it wasn’t all doom-and-gloom for the Valkyrie star. "It was a subject matter that’s important," he explained. "And now it’s something that’s being debated in the public."

For Tom, it’s not a matter of being on the wrong side of the issue — but rather a matter of not doing a good job of explaining his point of view. "I didn’t communicate it the way I wanted to communicate it," he told Matt. "That’s not who I am; that’s not the person that I am."

Having gotten a reality check from the negative publicity that followed the original interview, Tom says he’s learned to keep his priorities straight.

"I’m here to entertain people," he explained. "That’s who I am and what I want to do."

But don’t expect the outspoken actor to stay silent on the topic of his controversial religious beliefs. He’s just going to pick his battles more appropriately.

"I think there’s a time and a place for it," he told Matt about his speaking on behalf of Scientology. "When people are tuning in to hear about my movie, that’s what I’m here to talk about."

Off the topic of Scientology, Matt asked Tom if he and wife Katie Holmes are planning on having a baby brother or sister for their daughter Suri anytime soon.

"That’s a question for the women," he laughed. "It’s really their choice, isn’t it?"
