How Stars Celebrate Father’s Day

June 15th, 2008

Being a dad changes everything. For one thing, proud papas get a new holiday in Father’s Day.

Kirk Cameron reveals his tradition.

“What happens on Father’s Day is I’ll stay in bed and the kids want me to just hang out there until they can cook breakfast and bring it to me,” the Still Growing author, who is father to six kids, tells me. “They make me scrambled eggs, maybe some bacon, maybe some coffee just the way I like it. They bring me cards that they’ve made at school. The best thing about Father’s Day is that you have kids, and you get to love them and enjoy them.”

Billy Ray Cyrus tries to give daughter Miley her space. “I’ve always tried to be her best friend and that’s what I continue to do now,” he says. “I’m always there and I’m always a phone call away or a text. She always knows if she needs me, I’m there.”

Andrew McCarthy likes everything about being a dad to his Pokemon-loving son – “except getting up early.”

Bobby Brown says his two girls got a kick out of his turn as a country singer on CMT’s Gone Country.

“Once daddy gets honest with himself, they appreciate me more and more every day,” he tells me.

Chris Daughtry’s two kids are musical. His son is taking drum lessons, and his daughter is taking piano lessons.

“You have the chance of allowing them or teaching them to do something greater than you,” he tells me. “Even be a better dad than you.”

Meanwhile, stars including Clay Aiken and Matthew McConaughey are waiting for their first true Father’s Day now that the ladies in their lives are expecting. What advice does father-of-two Matthew Fox have for these new dads?

“Being a father is an individual experience and I wouldn’t really feel qualified to give anyone advice other than just trying to do the very, very best job you possibly can,” he tells me.

Kyle McLachlan is also infanticipating with wife Desiree.

“We’re expecting a little one at the end of July,” he tells me. “We’re both in New York and L.A., so we’re getting both apartments ready for where we’re going to be and where he’s going to stay.”

Indeed, dads hold great power. Just ask Rider Strong.

“I got screwed,” he says of his moniker, which he attributes to hippie parents. “I didn’t realize I had a porn name until I was fifteen. Too bad. There are worse things.”

What’s the best advice Robert DeNiro gave daughter Drena?

“Just use your eyes,” she tells me. “Don’t move your face so much. Use your eyes. That’s the most remembered advice.”

Snoop Dogg tells children it’s important to pay attention to their dads (and moms).

“Parents are teachers,” he tells me. “These are people who have knowledge and wisdom and they’re trying to pass it on to you. When they give you that, even if you don’t like it or understand it – take it in for what it’s worth because one day you’ll hear that voice again and you’ll be able to make a decision. You can say ‘I’m going to do the right thing or the wrong thing, but at least I know what the right thing is and the wrong thing is.’”

Country singer Jason Michael Carroll appreciates the good times with his little ones.

“I take them to school during the week. I’ll walk them to class. They think it’s cool everyone’s running up asking for dad’s autograph. I’m soaking it all in because in a few years, I’m pretty sure they’ll walk a few steps ahead – or even worse – they’ll tell me to wait in the car.”

Country singer Darryl Worley enjoys his baby girl, Savannah, who is ten weeks old.

“She’s a little red-headed fireball,” he says. “She’s already showing her personality. She’s gonna have a temper, she’s gonna be stubborn. Her mom says she’s definitely my child. It’s probably the best thing that’s happened to me in a lot of different ways. Suddenly I’ve got a real reason to fight.”

Law and Order: SVU
star Chris Meloni takes daughter Sophie bike riding and to the playground during the summer. “We play Monopoly,” he tells me, whispering, “She cheats.”

Sophie shouts, “Do not!”

What’s the best thing about Chris as a dad?

“That he loves me,” she says shyly, hugging him.

Matthew Fox is a Speed Freak

May 7th, 2008

Matthew Fox has been known to "peel out" at traffic lights.

"I’ve peeled out at a stop light for sure, absolutely," the 41-year old actor tells Parade.com’s Jeanne Wolf. "If I’m in the right car and there’s no traffic in front of me, I’m definitely known to peel out at the stoplight."

It seems perfect then that Matthew is starring in the big screen version of Speed Racer, in which his character, the mysterious Racer X, is a lead-foot with a need for speed.

To get ready for the role, Fox–who admits he’s used to walking around the Lost set in shorts and no shirt–had to don a tight fitting leather racing outfit as Racer X.

"I felt pretty good until I had to do a fight scene, which I don’t recommend if you’re wearing leather," Fox says. "It was grueling and the dehydration that I experienced was really intense. I was really exhausted at the end."

His character’s clothes weren’t just hard to fight in. Fox says he had initial trouble fitting into the leather suit!

"It was snug but I was forewarned," he says. "I think it was [director] Larry Wachowski who said, ‘You know the suit is going to be pretty tight,’ Which was his way of saying, ‘Get in shape.’ And so I did. I hired a trainer for the first time in my life. I’m glad I did."

Matthew says that in ‘real life’ he feels right at home behind the wheel of a fast car.

"I am and always have been [interested in cars]," he says. "One of my hobbies is taking ’50s vintage cars and modernizing them with all the new technology and making them really fun to drive. I loved that era of car design. I’m working on a 1950s Mercury Coup right now that is really going to be cool."

Matthew Fox: I’m a Doll!

March 22nd, 2008 / Author: cwillett

Matthew Fox isn’t lying when he says he’s a doll. The actor modeled for the Racer X action figure from his upcoming Speed Racer flick.

Racer X is a very, very cool dude,” the actor, 41, says. “He’s got a very cool outfit. As far as action figures go, I’d have to say it’s pretty good. They scanned it digitally really and it came out well.”

Matthew says his 6-year-old son Byron can’t wait for the flick to hit theaters.

“He asks me every single day when the movie’s coming out. He’s seen the trailer of the movie. He’s very excited.”

The action figure is a slice of fame his family doesn’t often experience. He has been married to wife Margherita for 17 years, and is also dad to their daughter Kyle, 9.

“We’re raising our kids in Hawaii. For me and for my wife, it’s important that we keep those two worlds as separate as possible. I do the work, I go on a movie set somewhere, and there’s a short period of time where I’m sort of in the spotlight promoting the film. My kids are never really aware that that’s going on in any way.”

Stars Reunite For ‘Vantage Point’ Premiere

February 23rd, 2008

Matthew Fox, Dennis Quaid, Sigourney Weaver, Forest Whitaker and Zoe Saldana are thrilled to see each other again for the premiere of their political thriller Vantage Point held at NYC’s AMC Lincoln Square.

Matthew brings wife Margherita along for interviews while Dennis’ wife Kimberly chats with friends. Mrs. Quaid holds Mrs. Fox’s purse for safe-keeping. “You look fantastic,” Kimberly says, complimenting Margherita on her dress.

Would Matthew stand in the line of fire?

“I would take a bullet for my family,” the affable actor says. “I have an enormous amount of respect for people who work in this area. They give their life to the profession. They’re constantly in a job in a professional manner.”

Any well-wishes for Marc and J.Lo? “For Marc and ha!” he says. “What, are they having a baby?”

Here’s Dennis, who chats about family and says he appreciates that the people of Mexico City – where the film shot — have heart. “Overseas they’re not too happy with us right now,” he says. “It is a very different feeling. But I think that’s all going to change come February. We are Americans.”

What did Dennis love about this role? “It was an interesting story told in an interesting way,” he says. “It’s my point of view, Forest Whitaker’s point of view, Sigourney Weaver’s point of view. It’s 15 minutes of each person. It’s like Andy Warhol where you get to be the star of your own life for fifteen minutes, and you’re a background character.”

He waves. “Thank you, take care.”

Next up is Sigourney, who used Katie Couric’s Today Show broadcast on 9/11 as inspiration to play a journalist. How did it feel to portray a newsperson? “I think it’s very exciting. I really do. It’s much more important than what we do. It’s a big responsibility if there’s a horrific event to put out the news responsibly and to not allow your own emotions to take you away.”

Forest and his wife dash through. “They want me in here,” he says.

There’s seating drama for Zoe, whose rep demands six spots together. As she runs by, Zoe calls out “water, chapstick and blush” as her favorite beauty products, and says she splurges on shoes. “Lots of YSL shoes. I love them.”

Wildest behind-the-scenes moment?

“When we were doing the car chase, Matthew was sitting in the car,” director Pete Travis tells me. “One of our locations got lost and he had to do a bit with green screen, and he was in a really bad mood. We had a cross word with each other, and he said ‘it’s never going to work.’ But then when he saw the car chase, he was amazed by it. It’s one of those things where sometimes you have to ask people to do something they don’t think is going to work even though you know it will.”

Vantage Point is in theaters now.

Matthew Fox: No Parenting Advice for McConaughey

February 21st, 2008 / Author: cwillett

Having been a father for 10 years, one might assume Matthew Fox would have some great words of wisdom for father-to-be and his We Are Marshall co-star Matthew McConaughey, but he begs to differ.

"That’s a tough one," Matthew tells OK! at the Vantage Point premiere. "Being a father is an individual experience and I wouldn’t really feel qualified to give anyone advice other than just trying to do the very, very best job you possibly can."

Matthew and his wife Margherita Ronchi have two children together, daughter Kyle, 10 and son Byron, 7. Unlike some other celebrity clans, the family is rarely snapped together — a benefit of living in Hawaii, where the 41-year-old actor has been calling home since Lost started in 2004.

"We are raising our kids in Hawaii," he says. "For me and for my wife, it’s important that we keep those two worlds as separate as possible. I do the work, I go on a movie set somewhere, and there’s a short period of time where I’m sort of in the spotlight promoting the film. My kids are never really aware that that’s going on in any way."

They are aware of his role in the upcoming Speed Racer big-screen adaptation. The studio is planning on rolling out dolls as part of promotion for the film, which hits theaters May 9, and Byron is pumped about dad’s Racer X figure.

"I actually have a little one that someone snuck me once because they’re not out yet," he says. "I went over to the Mattel Toy Show recently and saw all the Speed Racer stuff. They gave me a little racer that they came up with for my boy. He’s going to be very excited. He asks me every single day when the movie’s coming out. He can’t wait. He’s seen the trailer of the movie. He’s very excited. They both are."
