Melissa Rycroft Talks DWTS Injuries
May 4th, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff
Though she’s taken a bit of heat in recent days for not performing live in last week’s Dancing With the Stars because of an injury, Melissa Rycroft is still determined to get back on the dance floor and stay on the show as long as the viewers will have her.
In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight on Monday, the former Bachelor beauty talks in detail about the busted rib that almost had her leaving the show.
"They’re little hairline fractures that will mend together on their own," says Melissa, who reveals that she now wears a numbing patch to ease the pain during rehearsal. "It makes it tolerable. [Partner Tony Dovolani] has made the routine so that we’ll be able to do everything. It’s more mentally exhausting than anything else… You just grit your teeth and move on."
Melissa, who was forced to be judged on the basis of a taped dress-rehearsal, says she’s eternally grateful to everyone who gave her another chance to continue. "I was in tears… The fans saved us. What happened last Monday put everything into perspective… How bad you want it."
Jewel Clears Up Melissa Rycroft Comments
May 1st, 2009
Tongues started wagging recently when Jewel posted her response to having a practice preformance scored on Dancing With the Stars. Melissa Rycroft and Steve-O were injured after practicing for the reality show.
On her hubby’s blog she posted: "As bad as I felt for Melissa, who I hope feels better and comes back, I’m used to our cowboy athletes that live by the rule: ‘ride hurt or don’t get a score. It may seem harsh, but it seems like the only way to keep things honest. If you’re too hurt to compete then you can’t compete. But if I were to be on the show I might change my mind. Hahah!"
Some took that as Jewel criticizing the contestants, but now the songstress has taken to her own personal blog to clear up her comments.
"I like Melissa and think she’s gifted (and a real Texas sweetheart), and I adore Steve-O. My comment had nothing to do with either of them. My comment was on a sports website about a rule I have never seen in any type of competition before. Name another sport where if you can’t compete, they use your score from practice. Can you imagine an Olympic diver who can’t compete for any reason, and so they let them use their practice dives from that day? Or a chess match, for that matter."
Jewel adds that even if her husband were to be injured after practice, she’d feel the same way.
"If Ty were in the same position, I’d still ask the same thing. I am not a mean-spirited person, and I think all my fans know that. Ty and I have fallen in love with all the contestants, and are in awe of how hard they all work. I can tell you that whoever wins this competition will have earned it, as I see firsthand how incredibly hard they all work. So please don’t believe what the gossip columns are trying to turn this into. This isn’t a catty girl versus girl thing they are trying to make it into- neither I nor Melissa are like that."
So, that’s that.
Don’t Mess With Melissa Rycroft!

Melissa Forgives The Bachelor
March 10th, 2009
Apparently, all’s well that ends well… if it ends with a new reality TV gig, that is.
After The Bachelor star Jason Mesnick dumped Melissa Rycroft on national TV for a chance with runner-up Molly, fans were outraged. Melissa’s moving on, however, nabbing a gig on Dancing With the Stars in the wake of orginal contestant Jewel’s injury.
Jason’s already said sorry as well, including sending a message via Extra saying, “I apologize from the bottom of my heart….But I am very happy for you right now and I know you’re in a place you want to be.”
And after Melissa’s well-received debut on DWTS last night, she’s got a message of her own for her ex: You’re not the only one with a new love!
“I accept the apology," she tells Extra. "Forgive, forget. I’m moving on. And I’m away from that situation, in a new relationship and a new life really.”
Aww, snap!
DWTS Watch: New Season Kicks Off
March 10th, 2009
The eighth season of Dancing With the Stars kicked off Monday night with two of its original celebrities not even making it to the dance floor due to injuries.
It was a first for the hit ABC show, which has had its share of injured stars — but never ones that couldn’t even make it to the first show. “This has been the most dramatic pre-season we’ve ever had,” hostess Samantha Harris marveled to OK!.
As OK! has already reported, Access Hollywood hostess Nancy O’Dell, who suffered a torn meniscus in her knee, was replaced by The Bachelor’s jilted beauty, Melissa Rycroft. And Girls Next Door star Holly Madison stepped in to take the place of singer Jewel, who fractured her tibia.
A misty-eyed Melissa, who earned an incredible 23 out of 30 for her waltz with Tony Dovolani after having just two days to prepare, told OK!, “I’m speechless. I’m overwhelmed. Did I just do that?
“Today is one of the highest highs I’ve had in a long time and it’s following one of the biggest lows I’ve had,” Melissa said, referring to her Bachelor experience, in which Jason Mesnick dumped her after having proposed to her on the ABC show. “And it hit me when we finished our routine and I got a little emotional just going, wow, this opportunity is amazing. We had two days to cram it in and we did it.”
Though she’s not competing, Jewel still talked to OK! after the show. “I fractured my left tibia just from overuse," the singer, who is walking with the aid of a crutch, explained. "It was from eight hour days, seven days a week.” Unlike Nancy, she won’t need surgery and says, “It will heal.”
Still, “it was hard to watch somebody in my dress doing my routine,” she admitted about observing Holly from the audience.
The singer, whose rodeo star husband Ty Murray is competing on the show, said, “It sucks that we can’t do it together but I’m going to support him.”
Holly, who got 18 for her cha-cha-cha with partner Dmitry Chaplin, said when she got the call to be a last-minute replacement, she had no reservations. “I was really excited. I always wanted to do the show so I just threw myself into this. I don’t have any experience but I’m working really hard and hope to do better next week.”
The Playboy beauty is keeping her mind off the thought of getting injured. “I’m trying to stay positive.”
Meanwhile, Sex and the City stud Gilles Marini was surprised to get the highest score of the night with his partner Cheryl Burke. Their sexy cha-cha-cha earned a 24. “I never danced before," the French actor revealed. "In my neighborhood where I grew up, we don’t dance ballroom. We play soccer!”
’80s pop icon Belinda Carlisle told OK! after getting 17 for her waltz with partner Jonathan Roberts, “I’d like to think I have the beat still.” Belinda explained, referencing her hit Go-Go’s song "We Got the Beat!", “This is my favorite show and being challenged like this is typical. I’ve always done weird things and this is one of the weirder ones.”
After her cha-cha-cha got a score of 18, Denise Richards told OK!, “I had fun. It’s very scary.” Denise is getting along so well with her partner, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, whom she calls Maksy Poo. “I have nicknames for everyone,” she said.
In another DWTS first, a real couple took the stage together, when pro dancer and up-and-coming country star Julianne Hough performed with her boyfriend, country singer Chuck Wicks.
“I was very nervous,” Chuck said. “It was such a great feeling to get it over with.” They earned a score of 20 for their waltz.
The youngest DWTS competitor ever, gymnast Shawn Johnson, danced the waltz with Mark Ballas and was awarded a big score of 23, tying Melissa and Tony. “I feel amazing. I’m working hard,” she told OK!.
Actor and comedian David Alan Grier, who is partnered with Kym Johnson and earned a score of 19 for the waltz, said he was worried about getting injured before signing up for DWTS, but “I’ve performed my whole career and if I leave the competition, it’s because I can’t walk. I’ve always had problems with my body but I’ve got to push through it.”
Lil Kim, known as much for her jail time as for her singing, got a 21 for her cha-cha-cha with last season’s pro champ, Derek Hough. She’s looking forward to viewers seeing her softer side. Derek raved, “I love being around her — she has such positive energy.”
Jackass Steve-O waltzed away with a 17 with dancer Lacey Schwimmer. He’s been in rehab recently and admitted, “The past year has been a rocky road. I’m on borrowed time and I’m grateful for that.” Steve-O is looking forward to losing weight on the show: “I put down the bottle and the other stuff and picked up the fork and I’ve definitely got some shaping up to do.”
Ty Murray, who earned only 14 for his cha cha cha with partner Chelsie Hightower, said candidly, “I got nervous tonight and I’m embarrassed. I was out of my comfort zone.”
But computer pioneer Steve Wozniak, who received the evening’s lowest score, 13, for his cha-cha-cha with DWTS regular Karina Smirnoff, couldn’t have been more upbeat.
“We hit every single beat with the foot on time, good positions," he told OK!. "We had the fastest routine. We did exactly what we wanted—a fun dance people would like. The judges didn’t rate it high but we’re betting the general public does!”

The Bachelor’s Ex on DWTS
March 9th, 2009
The reality hits keep on coming when it comes to alums of The Bachelor – Melissa Rycroft, ex-fiancee of Jason Mesnick, will be joining the cast of Dancing With the Stars this season.
So is Jason jealous of his ex’s success after he broke up with her? Nope.
"I am so excited for Melissa, I know she has danced her whole life and she must be excited for the opportunity," he tells Extra. "I hope and think she will win it all."
Hopefully this time around, for her sake, she’ll get to keep it all forever.
Bachelor’s Melissa Speaks Up
March 4th, 2009
It’s time to stop feeling bad for Melissa Rycroft, the woman Bachelor Jason Mesnick left on national TV for another woman. Despite losing her fiancé to Molly, Melissa is thankful to fans of the show and says she’s doing just fine.
In the statement she also explains why she decided not to look for love again on The Bachelorette, saying she’s done with reality TV for now.
Read the full statement below:
"Although I could not be here, I want to thank everyone who has been so supportive throughout this process. This has been such an overwhelming experience, and I really do appreciate the support system behind me. This was definitely one of those experiences that changes your life, and makes you so much more aware of who you are and what you want out of life.
Strange as it may sound, I am doing really well. I’m back in Dallas, pursuing the teaching thing, and attempting to get my life back to normal (if it was every really normal to begin with). I still have my same life mottos: Live life with no regrets, and keep smiling no matter what happens.
I’m in such a good place in my life right now, and I really couldn’t be happier. I don’t regret anything that happened over the past few months; because I know I wouldn’t be where I am today had none of it happened. I have, however, decided to move on from my reality television days, and get some sense of normalcy back to my life. As wonderful of an experience as The Bachelorette would be, I think it’s time for me to move on from my television days, and see what my future holds back in Dallas. I have no doubt it will be an amazing experience for whoever assumes the role, and I wish them the best of luck! "
