Meryl Streep and Amy Adams July 27

Meryl Streep, Amy Adams and Chris Messina arrive at the special screening of Columbia Pictures’ Julie & Julia held at Mann Village Theatre in Westwood, Calif. on July 27.

The red carpet was packed as Streep, Adams and Messina signed autographs and greeted fans. Of course, Adams looked stunning in a white dress and Christian Louboutin heels and Streep was classy in a red skirt and black top. Messina went on to tell Entertainment Tonight “I was just excited to be boning a duck with Meryl Streep!” when asked how it was taking cooking lessons with Meryl.

Amy Adams “Wasted” Her 20s Hunting for a Man

July 8th, 2009 / Author: Mary Beth Quirk

Ladies Home JournalIn the new issue of Ladies Home Journal Amy Adams opens up about finding love with actor Darren LeGallo — and about all the years she squandered trying in vain to find a perfect man.

“I spent most of my 20s looking to find a man. What a waste of energy,” Amy admits. “Now I actually have a man and I’m able to focus on becoming a woman.”

A huge turning point in her life — both romantically and professionally — came while filming Julia and Julia with Meryl Streep.

“I got engaged on this film — the day before I finished shooting,” she explains. “Maybe this is a very, I don’t know, young girl statement, but when you’re not seeking to gain the approval of your man, it’s amazing what you can accomplish.”

Tim Gunn Explains It All

April 24th, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

Tim Gunn is passionate about fashion, which is the reason he’s getting behind the Addressing Psoriasis campaign in which select winners who are affected by the skin condition will get a trip to NYC to walk the runway in a special fashion show this September.

The cause is close to his heart: His sister lives with the chronic condition.

“I’m all about helping people with their fashion,” the Project Runway star, 55, tells me. “It helps people feel better about who they are, and it helps them navigate the world with great confidence.”

He adds, “People with psoriasis have a lot of self-confidence issues. A large aspect of that has to do with a belief that they must compromise the way that they want to dress according to places on their body where they’re affected with psoriasis – according to itching, discomfort and pain. They just feel ‘I can’t really be who I want to be’ fashion wise. Our message with the Addressing Psoriasis campaign is to say get to a dermatologist, there are myriad treatments out there – surely there’s one for you that will be effective. Through proper treatment, you can do whatever you want in terms of lifestyle.”

Tim, 55, sits down with me to talk about family, fashion and the secrets to his success.

Now that you’re a big star, what is it like when you get together with your family in Virginia and Delaware?
My mother tells me about all the ways in which she wishes I would change my way of dressing. I have too many dark suits, I wear too many stripes – she doesn’t like it. It’s funny. There’s nothing even remotely different, except my mother’s list of criticisms from various things. Articles where she feels I should’ve said X when I said Y, back to the clothing.

In fact, when I went home for the Christmas holidays in ‘07, she looked at me and said ‘I wish you would dress more like Mitt Romney.’ Truly. I was horrified.

How does Mitt Romney dress?
Like Mr. Rogers. ‘Wear a cardigan, get out of the suits.’ ‘Mother, I am who I am, and I’m fully branded this way.’ I’m not sitting around her house on Christmas morning wearing this [suit]. But it’s funny. I love her. She’s my biggest critic.

What celeb gets their style right?

Oh, Angelina Jolie. What I want to say about Angelina Jolie is that it’s one thing to take the red-carpet dressing and to evaluate it, but what interests me more is how they engage the real world and the rest of their life. I have to say she does it with superb sophistication and polish and appropriateness.

She knows what she looks great in, and I go back to appropriateness. She knows what to wear to pick up the kids versus walking the red carpet. She is appropriately aware that the paparazzi are around. She knows it’s important to have a certain polish. At the same time, it looks easy. I’m sure it’s not. It doesn’t look studied, it doesn’t look contrived. I’ve  never seen her overdressed.

She’s a great role model, but she’s also otherworldly. It’s not as though we can all be like this. No, I don’t think so.

What celeb needs your help?
It would be so easy, and so much easier to pick out the obvious victims like Britney Spears, but you know who I’d really love to work with? And if only to have a conversation. Not to take her shopping, not to go into her closet, just to have a conversation.

Our Queen of Hollywood, our smartest actress, has a gorgeous figure, but she really eschews fashion. She really says – I believe she’s saying – I’m too smart for this.

Meryl Streep. I really believe it. I’d love to sit with Meryl Streep and just say ‘you are incredibly smart. Don’t you subscribe to semiology?’ And if so, clothing. It’s a form of semiotics. The clothes we wear send a message about how the world greets us and perceives us. That messaging, to me, it’s all-important.

If you do accept that, fine. I will accept that you’re accepting responsibility for what you’re wearing. But just to say ‘I’m not a fashion person, I don’t care about these things.’ For me, that’s not responsible. Dress however you want, provided you accept responsibility for it.

What are your style pet peeves?
Shirts that are entirely too short. The bare midriff is my all-time biggest pet peeve. Unless we’re at a beach, I don’t want to see it, and no one should see it under any circumstances.

Then there’s the entirely too much cleavage. But it’s the section in the middle that is my big, giant warning sign.

Good luck charm?
Clean underwear!

Will you check out The Fashion Show?
Oh, of course I will. Yes.

I have to ask … do you think it will take the place of Project Runway?
Project Runway is the original. Project Runway is the standard-bearer, and therefore nothing can take it’s place.

Secret to your success?
I haven’t a clue. I believe in doing everything as well as possible under the circumstances. I believe in … this is where I feel like a pompous airbag.

I believe in the importance of listening. I know from experience that more and more people just don’t listen. And similarly, don’t read. They read something, but they haven’t “read” it. And so much of what we need to know to navigate the world well and successfully is right in front of our eyes and right in front of our ears. And we simply lack the patience or some attribute to really assimilate it. I know that that has been helpful for me.

Which isn’t to say there aren’t moments when I experience fatigue and it all dissolves.

But also, having respect for people and having patience.

What would your life be called if it were a movie, book or song?
I would call it Fanfare For the Common Man, after the Aaron Copeland piece because I couldn’t be more common, and I’ve enjoyed so much luck and success. I mean, I pinch myself every day. I say I’m the luckiest guy in the world. So yeah, Fanfare for the Common Man. That’s me.

Slumdog is Top Dog at SAG Awards

January 26th, 2009

Just like its main character, it’s looking more and more like Slumdog Millionaire could shock everyone who only weeks ago scoffed that a small, British-produced film set in India stood no chance of winning the Best Picture Oscar.

The latest triumph for the Danny Boyle-directed film came on Sunday night, when the cast of the film took home the top prize at the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards. This comes hot on the heels of Slumdog’s Best Picture win at the Golden Globes.

Some had written off the Globes win as a fluke, pointing out that those awards are handed out by a very small group of members of the Hollywood Foreign Press. But the SAG victory shows that Slumdog is deserving of the Oscar buzz.

Meanwhile, the Oscar heat surrounding the Brad Pitt special-effects bonanza The Curious Case of Benjamin Button has reduced to a simmer, with Milk star Sean Penn showing he can give Brad and Golden Globe winner Mickey Rourke a run for their money in the Best Actor category with a SAG win.

Awards-magnet Meryl Streep was the big winner in the Best Actress competition for her role in Doubt, but considering Kate Winslet won another Supporting Actress trophy for her part in The Reader — and considering that Kate and Meryl will go face-to-face come Oscar time — that race is still to be sorted out.

Heath Ledger was recognized by yet another awards ceremony for his indelible portrayal of The Joker in The Dark Knight, leaving no doubt that he’ll be similarly honored at the Academy Awards on Feb. 22.

Heath’s co-star in the film, Gary Oldman accepted the award on the late actor’s behalf. "He was an extraordinary young man with an extraordinary talent," Gary said when accepting the honor. "It is wonderful that you have acknowledged that and honored that talent tonight."

Salma Hayek Jokes, Anne Hathaway Meets A Man

January 15th, 2009

Salma Hayek brings on the laughs during the National Board of Review Awards Gala, which takes place Wednesday at NYC’s Cipriani.

The actress is here on behalf of her pal Penelope Cruz, who wins best supporting actress for Vicky Cristina Barcelona. She can’t attend because she is filming Nine.

Penelope sent me to accept her award, which would be fine if she gave me a letter, a note, bullet points or something,” Salma says in her exotic Mexican accent. “She only gave me a dedication, which I will tell you at the end, but I think it would be appropriate to thank the caterers of the movie because the food in Spain is so fantastic. I’m sure the drinks were excellent at lunch, because they always have wine there. I also find it appropriate to say that the hair and makeup department did a fantastic job at pretending they were destroying her beauty when the character was devastated.”

She continues, “Woody Allen – when I found out they were going to be working together, I knew there was a match made in heaven because he is the only person that I know who is almost as hypochondriac as Penelope. But she is extremely grateful to Woody for creating these amazing characters. I’d like to also thank the National Board of Review for voting for her, and I’d like to congratulate you for your impeccable taste.”

Anne Hathaway
, who is here with her mom, dad, director Jonathan Demme and manager, will collect best actress for Rachel Getting Married this evening.

“I kind of expect them to say ‘all right, here’s the man behind the curtain … it’s not really real,’” Anne says.

She continues, “I have lots of confidence, but this is so far beyond the realm of normal confidence. This is like ‘kick me in my head with a sledgehammer,’ and if I wake up, then it’s real.”

The single star shrieks when she sees Slumdog Millionaire star – and winner of breakthrough performance by an actor — Dev Patel, who was just telling me how much he’d love to meet her but he’s afraid he’d be too starstruck.

Anne: “That’s my favorite performance of the season. It is so beautiful, just gorgeous. The acting was brilliant, and it was one of the most heartfelt movies I’ve ever seen. It was a glorious time at the movies.”

Dev: “That means so much to me, you don’t understand. Thank you Mrs. Hathaway.”

Anne: “Oh no, it’s Miss, Miss, Miss.”

Dev: “Oh God, I’m offending her now.”

Anne: “No, you’re not offending me, I’m just letting you know that it’s Miss.”

When Anne heads inside, I ask Dev if he’d ask Anne out on a date because she seems interested. “She’s a bit out of my league,” he tells me. “She’s beautiful. I can’t believe it. I was just talking about it. I can’t believe she came up to me and said those lovely things.”

Heather Graham slides in as Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber troll through. Ooh! Later in the evening, I catch up with them about their new baby, shedding the baby weight and their romance.

Oops, Meryl Streep misplaces an item, but finds it. (Whew!)

Is Amy Adams – who wins best ensemble cast for Doubt — hoping for Oscar gold come February?

“I don’t think about it,” she says. “I take it one day at a time. The reward of doing a film like this is the award, you know? This is the icing, and I’m just grateful to be here tonight. I try to take it one day at a time when it comes to this kind of stuff.”

Here is Clint Eastwood, who wins best actor for Gran Torino. Is he really going to retire? “I keep talking about it all the time,” he says. “But my wife doesn’t want me to hang around the house too much.”

The dinner bell rings. It’s time for steak, green beans and peppers, topped off with a dessert of tiramisu and strawberries. Mmm!

During the ceremony, volatile Josh Brolin gets annoyed during his acceptance speech after host Whoopi Goldberg pronounces his name as Josh “Brollin.” He wins best supporting actor for Milk.

The View
host apologizes. “I’m wearing Invisalign and it keeps slipping,” Whoopi says. “Josh Brolin, Josh Brolin, Josh Brolin.”

Whoops!

As for the gift bag? It includes Bvlgari’s Jasmin Noir perfume.
