Michael J. Fox: I Love My Life

November 5th, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

Michael J. Fox, who has lived with Parkinson’s disease for almost 20 years, has a hard time not moving still because of the degenerative nerve disorder. But now, with a four-part guest spot on Rescue Me, the actor will have face the challenge of staying still to play a paralyzed, wheelchair-bound man.

"The funny part is me playing a paralyzed guy because I am the opposite of paralyzed," he tells Entertainment Tonight in an interview airing this evening. "It’s tricky just to even just to be still."

The character is a far cry from the good guys Michael usually plays on screen, which will be another stretch for the veteran actor, one he’s looking forward to.

"[Dennis Leary] called me up and described [the character]," he says. "He is really dark and misanthropic. He’s bitter and nasty. It’s really fun."

Although the beloved actor has been struggling with the disease for a long time, Michael has remained optimistic about his condition, saying he’s "pretty good all things considered," and penning Always Looking Up: The Adventures of an Incurable Optimist, due out this spring.

"If you’re never down you’ll never know how good it feels to be up," he tells ET. "It’s a great ride and I wouldn’t change a thing. I love my life for whatever difficulties there are."

Tune in to ET tonight for more!

Justine Bateman Takes ‘Waverly Place’

October 12th, 2008 / Author: Valerie Nome

Justine Bateman goes behind the scenes to write the episode of Wizards of Waverly Place that airs tonight on The Disney Channel.

The 42-year-old actress, who made her name on Family Ties from 1982-1989, spun lines for today’s teen queen Selena Gomez.

What advice would she give her and other young stars like Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato and Taylor Swift?

“Everybody has to figure this out themselves,” Justine, who started on Family Ties at age 15, tells me. “I definitely remember thinking long-term about my career with what I did and said. It’s something to think about if they want to continue to work in the business later.”

For Justine, who recently compared baby photos with her Family Ties castmates during a Today show appearance, writing for kids isn’t far-fetched now that she’s a mom to Duke, 6, and Olivia, 4, whose father is her hubby of seven years, Mark.

What are the kids into these days?

“My son really likes the video game called Four,” she says. “You create a little character and take him through his own evolution. That’s a really fun game. And my daughter is into art. She loves making stuff and painting and drawing. It’s good stuff. They’re really fun people.”

How has motherhood changed Justine, who is gearing up to shoot Candy Inc. with Judd Nelson for her production company FM78.tv this spring, and will appear on Californication November 9?

“I notice the phrases that I’ve repeated,” she tells me. “If my kids were to make a talking doll of me as a mother, one of my recorded phrases would be ‘I will throw that in the trash.’ ‘If you don’t put that down right now, I will throw that in the trash.’ It’s very funny to hear myself say certain things – like noticing which phrases become the most popular to use.”

She won’t push her little ones into showbiz, though.

“If they wanted to be involved in something creative down the line, I would try to help them out. But there’s an awful lot of choices in the world as far as what one can do for a living. It’s best to be familiar with as many sectors of the working world as you can be so you’ll be better at your creative job anyway. I want them to get out there and know everything about everything. But who knows. It depends on what they want to do for a living.”

As far as an official Family Ties reunion show goes, Justine doesn’t see it in the cards.

“I enjoy shows staying in their moment of time,” she tells me. “I think Family Ties was very specific to that ’80s moment. The things we talked about, the specifics of the characters, what the characters were involved with and enjoyed. I think it had such a great impact because of its timing. I like shows to stay within their timing, but it definitely set the standard for what’s possible on a TV show.”

And, how is her onscreen brother Michael J. Fox doing in his battle against Parkinson’s Disease?

“He’s plugging along,” she says. “He’s got a really great attitude. Mike has never hosted a pity party.”

One thing Justine and Michael remember fondly is their charmed childhood growing up on a hot TV show.

“My first splurge was a pair of Maude Frizon black leather over-the-knee boots,” she says. “I consider that to be a very good purchase, and I wore them for many years. Spending money on well-made things is always a good investment.”

She adds, “I really enjoyed myself.”

Catch Justine’s episode of Wizards of Waverly Place, which airs tonight at 8:30 pm ET/PT on The Disney Channel.

Madonna, Justin Roll Backstage at Rock Hall Induction Ceremony

March 12th, 2008 / Author: Valerie Nome

At 10:39 p.m., Madonna graces us with her presence backstage at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony held at NYC’s Waldorf-Astoria. She adoringly glances at Justin Timberlake as she poses for photos while her uber-publicist Liz Rosenberg races around wearing a silver ‘80s-style headband complete with a googly antenna. Afterwards, a fellow red carpet reporter happens upon the same elevator as Madge but gets rebuffed. So close!

During her induction speech, Madonna reveals her life was either a series of suddenlys or else it happened just as it should have been.

“Everything happens exactly as it was supposed to happen,” she says of her stellar career. “That I worked with the amazing people I was supposed to work with, that I traveled to the amazing places I was supposed to travel to, that I made the mistakes that I was supposed to make. That the universe would conspire to help me and guide me only up to this moment where I am standing in front of you.”

Justin, who inducted her, reminded the pop icon of the scathing reviews she’s received over the years. “Madonna will be out of the music industry in six months. Her voice is like Minnie Mouse on helium. Comparing Marilyn Monroe to Madonna is like comparing Raquel Welch to the back of the bus. That’s what they were saying about Madonna 25 years ago. I don’t think any of them are around to say it tonight.”

Back in the press room, Ben Harper gives props to rock music. “There’s no rules,” Laura Dern’s hubby says. “That’s what I love about rock and roll.”

Patti LaBelle confesses she canceled another event because she wanted to be here tonight. “One year I’m going to be inducted. Uh-huh.”

Inductees Gamble and Huff say they’re going to “party, party, party” to celebrate their induction.

Dave Clark, of inductee The Dave Clark Five, says American music in the ’60s was responsible for the British invasion. “I’m absolutely delighted. It’s a very, very proud moment for us. It doesn’t matter how long it takes.” (Tom Hanks mugs with the group!)

Saturday Night Live star Seth Meyers reveals he’s scouting the ceremony for material. “I guarantee you will find out on Saturday. If anyone has ever done anything to get on Saturday Night Live, it was today.”

Ed Burns and Christy Turlington roll through. He yuks that his favorite movie is Man for the City, which is “about a corrupt mayor of New York who gets caught in a sexual scandal.” (Ahem, Eliot Spitzer.) Michael J. Fox and wife Tracy Pollen pose for photos … and Chevy Chase announces he’s running for president.

Meanwhile, inductee John Mellencamp, Billy Joel and more stop by the On 3 Productions gift lounge, where they pick up D’Annunzio Group International jewelry, a Starlight Tattoo gift card, a New York Health and Racquet Club membership and SONU beverages.

Next year, the ceremony will take place in Cleveland at the actual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I’m going home! So fun.

Michael J. Fox Is a Man With a Mission

December 3rd, 2007 / Author: cwillett

For seven years, Michael J. Fox and his wife, Tracy Pollan, have been getting the word about fighting Parkinson’s disease through the Michael J. Fox Foundation, and on Dec. 1, the pair played host at the foundation’s benefit gala, "A Groovy Thing Happened on the Way to Cure Parkinson’s."

"It’s a treat to see friends and people I haven’t seen in a while,” Michael explained to OK! at the event. “It’s going to be a good night.” With the help from host Stephen Colbert, performers John Mayer, Gavin DeGraw and special guests Rachael Ray, Katrina Bowden and Donny Deutsch, those in attendance were sure to groove.

As for Michael, who actively fights to find a cure for the degenerative disease that he also deals with daily, he told OK!, “It’s not just finding the answer; it’s finding the questions.”

Since its inception in 2000, the Michael J. Fox Foundation has raised close to $100 million in research to combat Parksinson’s — and the funds are still growing. This father of four adds, “The challenge is just getting as much done as I want to get done.”
