Brad Pitt Heads to Congress

March 5th, 2009

Sometimes if you want things done, you’ve just got to do them yourself.

Brad Pitt founded Make It Right in 2007, a project to help build environmentally sustainable housing for those who lost their homes in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. And the dedicated humanitarian he is, he’s going to Washington to discuss his efforts to help those in need.

Brad’s set to meet with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi today, ostensibly to garner more support for his campaign. While some residents have already moved into their new homes, the project is an ongoing effort, with new homes still being built.

Brad Pitt is Proud of His Family

December 2nd, 2008

Brad Pitt has a lot to be proud about these days: Not only is his next movie The Curious Case of Benjamin Button already creating a lot of buzz, but he’s also a dedicated, busy father who finds the time to give back to his community.

Angelina Jolie’s main man recently spoke to Today’s Ann Curry in the ravaged 9th Ward of New Orleans, fairly glowing with pride over the progress his Make it Right campaign has seen.

"Now you see it. There’s actually families here who are home for the holidays," he says of the residents who have moved in to their new houses. "And it’s really, really cool.”

“This time next year, you’re going to see 100 homes here,” he added, “And not only that … these homes, what you don’t see is the way they work. It’s a sunny day. Those meters are running backward. They are off the grid. This is the road to affordable housing that you see right here.”

In addition to the growing collection of homes, Brad and Angie also have a growing family, something else Brad treasures.

“I’m really proud of this family,” he reveals. “I look at my sons and my daughters, and one’s from Vietnam and one’s from Cambodia and one’s from Ethiopia, and … they’re all brothers and sisters. And they’re fighting, they’re laughing, they’re going into hysterics and staying up late, and they’re messing with their parents, and they’re driving me crazy and I’m really proud.

“I truly feel rich being around them,” he adds. “It’s a rich home, and each one of ‘em offers so much to the mix.”

Kim & Reggie Relax in the Big Easy

November 12th, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

When you’re a successful reality star dating a professional football player, it seems like it really is all fun  and games! Kim Kardashian and her beau, New Orleans Saints running back Reggie Bush, have had some time recently to unwind, going bowling, watching movies, and playing video games!

”Reggie is really competitive,” Kim told the Associated Press Tuesday after previewing the new Nintendo Wii game, ”Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party,” in New Orleans with her main man. ”At first I was winning, then he came back and beat me."

Reggie needs his rest these days, as he’s recovering from knee surgery, and Kim seems dedicated to spending time with him away from the Keeping Up With the Kardashians cameras.

”We just chill out when I’m in New Orleans,” she says. ”It’s not about work when I’m here. It’s about spending time with Reggie.”

Their time can be limited, as Kim is based in L.A. and Reggie is busy with football, but they do their best to stay connected.

”Sometimes we’ve had to go 10 days, but we try not to let it go that far,” she said. ”We’re dedicated. When you’re committed to something and really want something, you make it work.”

Brad Gives Katrina Victims a Home

October 10th, 2008

How many people can say the house they live in is all because of Brad Pitt? Well, at least six families in New Orleans 9th ward district—an area hit hard by Hurricane Katrina—can directly thank the actor for the roofs over their heads, according to the Associated Press.

Brad’s Make It Right project has completed six houses so far in the neighborhood, which was devastated by the hurricane three years ago.

Brad and Angelina Jolie, who bought a home in New Orleans about a year after Katrina hit, visisted the area with their six kids earlier this week. Gloria Guy, a 68-year-old grandmother, was there with a big hug for the actor’s big heart.

”I thank God for Brad Pitt,” the AP reports Gloria as saying. "I told him how much I appreciate all that he’s done for me and my family.”

Though only six are complete for now, there will eventually be 150 Make it Right homes, in an attempt to repopulate the neighborhood and bring back the families that once lived there.

OK! Exclusive: Brad’s New Orleans Plan

September 2nd, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

Since the news broke that Hurricane Gustav was set to hit New Orleans over the Labor Day weekend, many have been wondering where two of the city’s star residents and biggest rebuilding proponents — Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie — have been.

To get to the bottom of the story, OK! spoke with Virginia Miller from the Make It Right Foundation, an orginization Brad has worked closely with in recent years, helping to bring sustainable and affordable housing back to the lower income portions of New Orleans that were ravaged by 2005’s Hurricane Katrina.

According to Ms. Miller, Brad is definitely planning a trip soon to New Orleans, where he and Angelina have set up a home with their six children in the city’s French quarter. In fact, Miller tells OK!, Brad had actually been talking to her about coming down before Gustav ripped into town on Monday.

Miller tells OK! she hasn’t had a chance to speak to Brad in the last few days, and it will be at least a few days before the actor could make his way into town, as no one is currently being allowed in or out of the area.

As for the newly built and under-construction homes that Brad has made such a high-profile priority of his, Miller is happy to report to OK! that these buildings, located in the city’s 9th Ward, appear to be okay as that area wasn’t too severly hit by Gustav’s category 3 winds and rain.

Last December, when Brad appeared on the Today Show to talk about his work in New Orleans with the Make It Right foundation, he said it "is more fulfilling than any movie I’ve ever done."

Brad and Angie’s New Hometown

Why should I go?

Moments after you arrive in the Big Easy, it becomes clear that the people here are passionate about two things: music and food. Walk around the streets and the sound of jazz is never far away, nor are the smells of hearty gumbo, spicy jambalaya or those heavenly beignets.

The devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina are still being felt in New Orleans. But the rebuilding efforts—which includes Brad Pitt’s Make It Right foundation—and the resilient spirit of the city’s residents keep tourists returning to the city they know and love. Why? Well, there’s never a dull moment, which is always most evident during Mardi Gras New Orleans’ world-renowned two-eek celebration that ends on Fat Tuesday every year. Other events to check out: the French Quarter Festival and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, both in April; New Orleans Wine and Food Experience in May; and Tales of the Cocktail in July.

Where should I stay?

The 527-room Ritz-Carlton New Orleans stands in the northeast corner of the French Quarter on Canal Street and is a short walk from the major hot spots. The spa and gym are second to none, and the fit shop has many authentic souvenirs, including jazz CDs to help you re-create the New Orleans sound in your own home. Some staff members say the hotel is haunted—the lights did flicker once or twice—but we’ll let you decide. The club level, Maison Orleans, is perfect for guests who want extra-special treatment, like refreshments throughout the day and concierges with excellent knowledge of the city.

What should I do?

Back to those beignets: The buzzing Café Du Monde on Decatur Street near the waterfront is the place for these warm doughnut treats, which arrive in batches of three, buried under a mountain of powdered sugar. They’re the perfect accompaniment to the city’s famous chicory coffee. Across the street is Jackson Square and Saint Louis Cathedral, the heart of the Vieux Carre (aka the French Quarter). Take a buggy ride to soak up the atmosphere and gaze at the beautiful 18th century architecture. Exquisite villas and their delicate balconies are adorned with hanging flower basket and proudly displayed city flags.

Don’t forget to explore New Orleans’ otherworldly side, either by visiting the city’s spooky stores to buy a voodoo doll, or paying a visit to a psychic to get your palm read. Another tip: be sure to visit one of several above-ground cemeteries.

As nightfall descends, New Orleans starts shaking its booty. For those who want to get a head start, your first stop should be Pat O’Brien’s, where the city’s signature drink awaits. The Hurricane is a secret blend of who-knows-what, and locals warn tourists to imbibe only one on a night out. They’re right—two is pushing it; three is asking for trouble. Around the corner on the landmark Bourbon Street (which is not for the faint of heart) is Tropical Isle, a kitschy tiki bar where their specialty drink, the Hand Grenade, gives the Hurricane a run for its money.

For a more refined evening, Commander’s Palace in the Garden District offers elegant dining, including turtle soup, crispy soft-shell crab and bread pudding soufflé. Restaurant August, just a five-minute walk from the Ritz-Carlton, serves up Louisiana cuisine with a European twist and has charmed the likes of James Gandolfini and Faith Hill. Over in the eastern part of the city is Frenchmen Street, lined with jazz bars and restaurants. Snug Harbor Jazz bistro is a favorite hangout of the well-known Marsalis musical family and boasts delicious gumbo—particularly tasty if you’ve had one too many Hurricanes the night before.

Bar Apologizes for Snoop No-Show

February 18th, 2008 / Author: cwillett

Seems like the folks at The Boot, a New Orleans bar catering to a largely collegiate clientele, are none too happy with hip-hop superstar Snoop Dogg after he ditched on a planned party there last weekend.

Snoop was in the Big Easy on Saturday to perform as part of the NBA All-Star Weekend festivities, and a huge afterparty was planned at The Boot, where he had held similar bashes in the past.

The rapper was supposed to have his DJs start spinning at The Boot around 10:30 on Saturday with Snoop himself slated to make the scene around 1 a.m. And even though his crew came in and set up all the DJ equipment, not a single member of Snoop’s entourage showed.

"We got stood up so bad!" Boot employee Michelle tells OK! about the situation. "We charged $15 a person and the line was out the door waiting to get in."

To atone for the debacle, the bar sent out the following e-mail to its regular patrons on Monday:

"The Boot would like to apologize for the disappointment that was this past Saturday night. As most of you know, Snoop Dogg was supposed to throw his afterparty for the NBA All-Star Weekend Slam Dunk Contest at The Boot, but never showed up. Despite the fact that this was completely out of our hands (and we were just as pissed off as you were), we want to show our appreciation for everyone who stuck around all night by offering a free 50 cent night this week.

"Again, we’re sorry for the frustration, so come by, get drunk and maybe get laid and you’ll remember how much fun we used to have together… baby."

Brad & Angie’s Big Easy

January 2nd, 2008 / Author: cwillett

For a couple like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who have traveled together to countless exotic locales and who could afford to live and raise their growing family anywhere in the world they choose, a laid-back city like New Orleans might seem slightly out of place. But that’s exactly the reason they love it so much.

"Angelina adores New Orleans," a source inside the Brangelina camp explains to OK!. "It’s where she and her family feel safest. They feel like they’re an all-American, regular family and that they’re no different than any other family walking around the French Quarter with their coffee on a cold morning."

This feeling couldn’t have been more evident than during the recent holidays, when the Jolie-Pitt clan gathered in the Big Easy to relax and spend time together. "It’s a special place for Brad and Angie," reveals the insider. "They really feel at home and it brings them closer together, it seems to be the one city where they connect.”

And Brad and Angelina aren’t content with just taking shelter in their new home; these A-list philanthropists are giving back, especially Brad, whose Make It Right project aims to rebuild homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. “Angelina loves the idea that they have helped the community since Katrina," the source tells OK!. "She finds it incredibly sexy that Brad is so passionate about restoring the city, the community and being a part of the culture.”

The proud parents love taking their four young children sightseeing around New Orleans. “ They want them to see the breathtaking beauty of the city,” the family friend explains to OK!. “Shiloh ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’ over everything. She would get so excited she’d just start clapping and giggling on the back of Angelina’s bike."

Brad Wants to “Make It Right”

December 3rd, 2007 / Author: cwillett

This morning on The Today Show, Brad Pitt took co-host Ann Curry on a tour of New Orleans’ flood-devastated 9th Ward, where the actor is launching his "Make It Right" campaign, which seeks to rebuild at least 150 homes for residents of the area who lost their residences to Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

"It’s an art installation, it’s a social statement," the actor explained about the site, where abstract stacks wrapped in pink cloth are scattered around the landscape, representing the homes Brad and his fellow organizer wish to rebuild. "But most of all, it’s a fund-raising tool."

The actor and father of four children with Oscar-winner Angelina Jolie, explained that he’s hoping to have some people back in their homes by the end of next summer. And while he’s pledged $5 million of his own money to the project, he’s asking for help from people of every income level. "I’m looking to foundations, high net-worth individuals, church groups," he said, adding that anyone can go to makeitrightnola.org where they can donate money or sponsor anything from solar panels to doors. "I’m gonna get my dad a tankless water heater for Christmas," Brad said.

"I see this as a great opportunity," he explained when asked how his work in New Orleans compares to his film work. "This is more fulfilling than any film I’ve ever done."
