Is Olivia Newton-John’s Ex Alive?

January 27th, 2009

While Ashton Kutcher probably isn’t hiding around a corner, Olivia Newton-John may be getting the feeling that she’s been "punk’d": Her former partner, Patrick McDermott, went missing four years ago and was presumed dead. But now private investigators say he staged his own death in order to avoid debt and allow his son to collect on a $100,000 life insurance policy.

According to Australia’s The Courier-Mail, investigators believe Patrick has been on the run in Mexico and South America since vanishing from a fishing boat in June 2005.

"He’s alive – there’s no doubt in my mind, this guy’s alive," lead investigator Philip Klein tells the paper.

Patrick and Olivia had been dating for nine years when he disappeared off the coast of California, and an official US Coast Guard report indicated he had likely drowned.

Dateline hired Klein, a specialist in tracking down kidnap victims and missing people who do not want to be found in March 27 to look into the former cameraman’s disappearance.

"Patrick McDermott walked off The Freedom and Patrick McDermott’s running in Mexico – that simple," Klein said. "We’re close.

Olivia has since married millionaire John Easterling and moved to Florida.

John Travolta, Kelly Preston Fought For Son

January 5th, 2009

Deepest condolences go to John Travolta and wife Kelly Preston, who lost their 16-year-old son Jett on Friday.

John and Kelly are among the most kind, genuine superstars I’ve met, which makes this heartbreaking tragedy that much sadder.

I first sat down with Kelly in 2001, when she was lobbying Congress on behalf of CHEC to enact a national Right To Know bill, which she described as “the right to know what chemicals are harming us and how.”

Accompanied by Olivia Newton-John, the two stormed the Capitol in Washington, D.C., to get things accomplished. They made a video called Not Under My Roof, which they hoped to get into maternity wards by 2002. (It worked!)

According to Kelly, Jett, then 8, nearly died at age 2 when he breathed in fumes shortly after their carpets were cleaned.

“We’re using things on counters, carpets and outside on the lawn that are very damaging to young nervous systems,” Kelly tells me. “The rates for cancer, autism and learning disabilities are way up. I want to know why and I would like to stop that.”

She was especially concerned about PVC, which is a chemical that was discovered in children’s necklaces sold at Kmart at the time.

“It is found in teethers, and America hasn’t stopped using them, which is appalling, because when the children mouth these toys, the chemicals are released into their little bodies,” Kelly tells me.

I’ve seen Kelly several more times over the years with her husband at 2003’s Stella Adler School of Acting Awards, his 2007 Hairspray premiere and her 2007 Death Sentence premiere.

It was very exciting to meet John Travolta for the first time. It was even more refreshing how his soft-spoken nature has a way of putting everyone at ease. (One time he even called me “honey” – wow!) He seems like he would be a great father, and he didn’t think his Hollywood fame made him any different from others rising to the challenge of parenthood.

“It’s tough to be a parent anywhere,” John said at his wife’s Death Sentence premiere. “I think there’s some advantages that Hollywood people have for encouraging privacy and homeschooling. We get to control our environment a little better — even though it looks like being famous you’re less controlled. We actually in some ways get to control it better.”

Kelly certainly cherishes motherhood. What’s her favorite part?

“Just the closeness and the fun and the joy they give you on an every-moment basis,” she tells me at her premiere. “It’s just so wondrous. There’s so many clichés, but it’s really seeing things through their eyes, or the hilarious ways they’ll perceive something. Their take on it is so completely astute. Kids say the wildest things. Well, they really do, and they nail it all the time.”

In getting through difficult times, the couple relies on their 17-year history as husband and wife.

At his Hairspray premiere, John tells me the secret to a happy marriage lies in communication. He says, “Communication leads to understanding, and understanding is a universal solvent.”

They also rely on spirituality to keep their union strong.

“We’re both Scientologists and we have similar beliefs in how to raise our kids,” Kelly says at her premiere. “It keeps us growing spiritually and constantly and happy and grounded.”

John says, “We use the techniques all the time at work, home, with the kids. It’s all tools for better survival.”

Kelly adds, “Better living. We know how to survive in life a whole lot better. It helps you on a daily basis. Apply religious philosophy everywhere that it’s applicable.”

John continues, “It is tools you need every day to better your life.”

Our thoughts are with John, Kelly and their daughter Ella Bleu, 8, during this devastating time.

Olivia Newton-John’s Tips For Living Well

October 7th, 2008

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Olivia Newton-John is supporting the cause in more ways than one since she overcame her own personal battle with the disease in 1993.

First, her new CD A Celebration In Song featuring duets with Keith Urban, Richard Marx and more is in stores now, and proceeds go to The Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre, which is due to open in Melbourne, Australia, in 2009. She points to Right Here With You, the duet she recorded with Delta Goodrem, as the most personal song.

“It’s about our cancer journey because Delta also had cancer as a young woman,” Olivia tells me of the Aussie singer, 23, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease at 18. “It says ‘don’t give up, here I am, if you need a helping hand, I’m going to be right here with you.’ It’s all about helping somebody who’s going through the cancer journey.”

Secondly, she’s teamed up with Curves to give away one million of her breast cancer self-examination kits called LivAid.

“I hope that one day every woman will be given one of these because it’s important,” she tells me.

For Olivia, 60, who married entrepreneur John Easterling in June, giving back is her way of helping others. But she’s also seen her share of heartache. Aside from breast cancer, the Grease icon’s trials and tribulations have included her longtime boyfriend Patrick McDermott’s mysterious disappearance in 2005, and divorce from Matt Lattanzi, who is the father of her 22-year-old daughter Chloe, in 1995. What is the most difficult thing she’s overcome, and how did she get through it?

“I’ve had a lot of challenges, so I won’t put a name on one of them,” she tells me. “Just believing that I would get through it and knowing that there are no shortcuts. With any challenge or pain or difficulty, the only way through it is to go through it — go through the fire. And you come out the other end of it. There’s a balance in life. I think life has an equilibrium. It balances out. Hopefully you learn from your experiences and grow. I think I’ve always had a pretty positive attitude that I would get through whatever it is. I live life that way.”

She recently celebrated her 60th birthday. How does she feel?

“Fortunate,” Olivia laughs. “I feel very blessed that I’m here and I’m healthy. I couldn’t be in a better place in my life.”

Any tips for looking so great after six decades? Aside from applying her hubby’s Amazon Herb product Illuvia to her skin twice a day, Olivia credits her youthful looks to using the treadmill, taking walks and playing tennis two to three times a week. Their dogs Jack and Sherlock often accompany the couple when they hike or take strolls on the beach. And she’s in fantastic shape. Earlier this year, Olivia spent three weeks walking 250 miles along the Great Wall of China.

For every day, she attributes her sleek physique to the digestive aid Digestazon from John’s Amazon Herb line.

“I take it with every meal and it helps digest food,” she says. “I eat everything now because I can digest it well. I used to eat more carefully. I like grilled food, I tend to like grilled simple foods like salads and vegetables, I eat meat occasionally like chicken and fish. I eat well. I eat fruits and vegetables. I don’t see it as a diet, I see it as a lifestyle for me. I try to eat organically as much as I can.”

Billy Crudup Charms During TropFest NY

October 1st, 2008

While Julianne Moore stays locked inside her VIP suite, The Hills star Whitney Port causes a Britney Spears-style frenzy when she enters TropFest NY, the world’s largest short film festival held at World Financial Center Plaza in NYC. She flips her blonde mane as she saunters away from the melee. A camera crew captures her every move.

Billy Crudup is remarkably relaxed and friendly when he arrives. “Hey, how’s it going?” the ex of Mary-Louise Parker and Claire Danes begins. Donning a flannel, the handsome devil who is judging the festival doesn’t have all the answers, but at least he’s nice about it – even if he doesn’t want to go there.

“What surprised you about your Public Enemies costar Johnny Depp?” I ask.

“I actually didn’t work with him,” he responds. “Most of my stuff was with Christian Bale because I played J. Edgar Hoover and Christian Bale played Purvis, the FBI guy who got Dillinger. I wasn’t involved with Depp.”

OK, well what about Christian Bale?

“He played Agent Purvis, the guy who catches Dillinger. Basically I sat behind the desk and gave him orders. It’s a very small part. The story is really about Johnny Depp and Christian Bale.”

A-ha. Since TropFest is imported from Australia, what does Billy like to do when he’s Down Under? “I’ve never been to Australia. I have been to New Zealand but I’m learning that that’s not Australia.”

Luckily, Delta Goodrem is Australian and she’s here to usher in the NYC version of her country’s famed festival. She recommends visiting Torranga Zoo in Sydney and taking in Ayers Rock in Alice Springs.

She coos with delight when I tell her Olivia Newton-John sang her praises this summer. The duo recorded Right Here With You for ONJ’s Celebration In Song CD, which also includes duets with Keith Urban, Richard Marx and Jann Arden. Proceeds benefit The Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre.

“Ohh! We always call each other up if we’ve got charities coming up, and say ‘can you help me out here?’” Delta, 23, who battled Hodgkin’s Disease at 18, tells me. “She’s beautiful. She’s been a wonderful guiding light to me.”

We hear Josh Lucas is on deck at the afterparty. He’s always a good time.

Olivia Newton-John Shares Love Story

August 23rd, 2008

Olivia Newton-John loves John Easterling so much, she married him twice!

In the OK! on newsstands now, the Grease icon, 59, shares with me all the details of her special days. (We go way back — here’s a pic with Olivia and Kelly Preston from 2001!)

How did she and her new hubby fall in love?

“We met about fifteen years ago through mutual friends, and at the time we were both in very different places in our lives, so the idea of a romance didn’t really come up,” Olivia tells me. “I thought he was a very nice, charming and handsome man and I really respected him and his passion for the environment and what he and his company, The Amazon Herb Company, are doing to create a sustainable future for the Amazon and its people.”

She adds, “John has been traveling and working in the Amazon for over thirty years, which is why they call him Amazon John. His company harvests rainforest herbs and enables indigenous communities to protect their land through various programs he has set up.”

She continues, “Even though nothing romantic happened when we first met, we stayed in touch over the years. In fact, when my Irish Setter had puppies in the early 90s, John took one of them, which kept us connected.”

When the pair shared the news of their nuptials at a July Fourth party, Grease was the word.

“My dear friend Didi Conn [who played Frenchie] was at the barbecue,” she says. “Friends and family are all very happy for us!”

Pick up the OK! on newsstands now for Olivia’s wedding photos and interview. “Britney: How I Got My Body Back” is the cover line.

Olivia Newton-John Gets ‘Sordid’

July 23rd, 2008

Olivia Newton-John turns on the “privacy please” sign during the premiere of Sordid Lives: The Series held at New World Stages in NYC. The event benefits The Trevor Project, which is the nation’s only 24-hour suicide prevention helpline for gay and questioning youth.

Olivia plays an ex-con in the 12-part series about the dysfunctional, not-always-pretty side of Southern family life. She performs five original songs written for the show, which debuts tonight on LOGO.

Earlier in the day, I am fortunate enough to spend the morning with the Grease icon, which is awesome considering she was a huge influence on me growing up. Her sister, Rona, is there too. Wow!

On one family vacation, I visited her store, Koala Blue, which was featured in – yes! – Barbie magazine. I totally remember being a super-duper young kid reading the tabloid headlines in line at the grocery store, and sassing back to my parents that because Olivia lived with her boyfriend-at-the-time Matt Lattanzi, whom she later married and divorced, I could do the same when I grew up. I remember when her daughter Chloe was born, thinking how charmed her life would be.

In the present day, Olivia, 59, recently married John Easterling after enduring tragic heartbreak when longtime boyfriend Patrick McDermott went missing in 2005. Tonight, I follow up by asking her the biggest lesson she’s learned in love.

“The biggest lesson?!” she gasps in her lilting Australian accent. “Wow. I don’t know how to answer that. That’s really a personal question. I don’t mean that in a rude way. But I think that’s too personal.”

Leave it to Olivia to dismiss prying questions gracefully. No wonder she’s such a star.

Secrets from the Lipstick Jungle Set, Part I

January 24th, 2008

Lipstick Jungle is 14 days away and counting! I’ll be bringing some of the hottest interviews from the set here over the next two weeks, so check back often!

Now any time I can bring Broadway and TV together is a perfect day for me. So I’m psyched that Broadway star Kerry Butler, who currently stars in the lead role of Xanadu, the musical, is slipping off her roller stakes and slipping into her Jimmy Choos to star on the highly anticipated NBC series. Kerry stars as Reese, not-so-faithful assistant of fashion designer Victory Ford, played by Lindsay Price.

“I start out as this good girl, this sweet assistant, but I end up stabbing her in the back,” Kerry confided to me while she was being was immortalized as a cartoon drawing, which will be on display on the famed walls of Sardi’s Restaurant in midtown Manhattan. Kerry and Lindsay even throw down in a future episode. “We get into a fight, it should be crazy,” she says.

Kerry can be seen six nights a week as irresistible Greek muse Clio/Kira, who comes to earth and falls in love with a mortal, in the stage remake of the campy 1980 film starring Olivia Newton-John. “It’s like nothing like I’ve ever experienced before. I’m on roller skates the whole time, and everybody gets glow sticks at the end, so it’s really like a big party,” says Kerry.

And a party it was! I’m still singing the theme song and twirling my glow stick in tempo.

Lipstick Jungle premieres Thursday, Feb. 7 at 10 p.m. on NBC. Catch Kerry live in Xanadu at the Helen Hayes Theatre in New York City. Contact ticketmaster.com for information.
