Sophia Bush: My Dogs Are Like My Kids

June 24th, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

Sophia Bush gushes about her new dog, Penny, during the reception for her coming-of-age drama The Narrows held at NYC’s Bottino. Noshing on appetizers including grilled shrimp with garlic, grapes and cheese and a turkey wrap, the One Tree Hill beauty, 26, admits she recently purchased chew toys for her pups Patch, and new addition Penny.

“She’s another rescue pitbull,” Sophia tells me in her signature rasp. “She was a few days away from being euthanized at the pound. She’s amazing. She’s the first dog I’ve come across in all this time that I’ve been thinking about getting a dog so that Patch has a companion that really reminds me of him. They have really kindred spirits. She’s a puppy, but there’s a lot of life in her eyes. She’s a very old dog. I know that might sound strange to call a dog an old soul, but she is. She’s really special, and they’re just in love with each other, so it’s a good match.”

Patch and Penny are lucky pups.

“My dogs are absolutely spoiled. They come to work with me every day. We’re never apart — ever. I take them everywhere I go. We hike, and we go to the beach. I pile them in the bed. I think, with animals, they encourage a pure showering of love, and I really like that.”

Sophia, who divorced One Tree Hill co-star Chad Michael Murray in 2006, finds that her puppies are preparing her for motherhood.

“Having a pet is a big responsibility. It’s like being a parent. Granted, they’re not as intense obviously as children, they’re very similar. My animals are like my kids for me, and your life — your schedule — revolves around what they need.”

She adds, “When I travel, I always have to take the dogs into consideration. ‘Where are they going to stay? How are they going to fly? Where are we going to go? Are we going to fly or are we going to drive?’ It’s a very big commitment, but I think it’s incredibly rewarding.”

Sophia’s protective side comes out when her animals are involved.

“It’s an interesting thing for me because I’m a very laidback chill person but if someone ever hurt my dogs, it would be over.”

Sophia Bush’s “Forced Vacation”

May 1st, 2009

Sophia Bush is so dedicated to working on One Tree Hill, that a surgeon had to remove some of her insides to get her to take a vacation!

"I had my tonsils taken out ten days ago, so I’m not doing anything," she told OK! at the premiere of Star Trek in L.A. last night. "I’m recuperating and this is the first time I’ve left my apartment. It’s kind of like a forced vacation and it’s the first time I’ve taken a break in the six years since the show started. And I’m really kind of enjoying it! Aside from the pain."

Of course, the pain is nothing when it comes to supporting the cast, including Zachary Quinto, who plays a young Spock.

"My dear friend Zach is starring in this movie and I wasn’t going to miss it!," she says of finally heading out. "So I’m a little swollen but I’m here!"

We’re just glad the poor girl finally took a break, forced or not.

The CW renews its TV slate

February 24th, 2009

Time to do a couch potato dance.

The CW has just announced which shows will be back come next season, and the TV Fanatic can’t stop smiling.

Along with my ultimate guilty pleasure show, Gossip Girl; 90210, Smallville, Supernatural and yes, One Tree Hill, have been renewed. Looks like going five years into the future does a series good.

Would be Cover Girls will be working the catwalk again as America’s Next Top Model is renewed for another million cycles.

Speaking of ANTM, I’ve always watched in awe  — and envy — as those 5’8-plus glamazons work the runway. But not anymore.

The series has announced its first casting call for would-be models 5’7” and under as the show preps for its first petite ANTM competition.

“There have been top supermodels in the past that weren’t as tall as the industry demands, like fashion icon Kate Moss,” ANTM executive producer and host Tyra Banks said via statement.  “So we are changing up Top Model for cycle 13 and making it a year for the shorter model!”

Casting calls commence Feb. 28 in Miami, Fla.

Finally girls under 67 inches can get schooled by Ms. Tyra herself! Holla, my fellow shorties!

James Van Der Beek Joins One Tree Hill

October 15th, 2008

James Van Der Beek is headed back to his old stomping ground, only this time he’s headed–not for the creek, but to One Tree Hill.

The Dawson’s Creek alum will guest star on an episode of One Tree Hill, set to air in late November.  It will be a homecoming of sorts for Van Der Beek–One Tree Hill shoots on the same lot that housed Dawson’s Creek in Wilmington, NC.  Van Der Beek’s character will play a director who’s interested in making a movie out of Lucas’ (Chad Michael Murray) novel.

"The specter of Dawson’s Creek is always around us," says Mark Schwann, who exec produces Hill.  "We’re about to complete 128 episodes, which is what Dawson’s did…So I thought it would be cool to get James."

Sophia Bush Comes Clean

June 2nd, 2008

Sophia Bush is warm and friendly when she launches Tone’s Almond Milk body wash during a Gen Art Styles event held at NYC’s Hammerstein Ballroom.

As lemon chicken and tuna tartar tacos are served, tunes including Rihanna’s Umbrella, Jesse McCartney’s Leavin’ and Leona LewisBleeding Love fill the air. Sophia struts up to the microphone.

“What’s come to the forefront of fashion and beauty products today is a trend toward our world becoming more accessible,” the raspy-voiced One Tree Hill star says. “You can see that with Sarah Jessica Parker’s Bitten line, and you can see that with these Tone products, that are wonderful for your skin. It’s chic, fashionable and affordable.”

Sophia and I sit down on white couches, where she is giddy about presenting the Tone Fashion Vision Award to Jolibe tonight. (She’s also giving him a check for $10,000!) What’s the key to her style?

“Always having fun with it,” the actress, 25, tells me. “Putting on something that makes you feel great, whether you’re in the mood to be casual and throw on jeans and a v-neck t-shirt, or you want to get done up and put on a dress and the heels and throw the hair up in bobby pins. Regardless of what it is, you’ve gotta feel good. If other people are pushing you into fashion decisions, I don’t think that’s the way to go. That’s why I generally choose to dress myself.”

What makes her feel comfortable?

“What makes me feel most comfortable is feeling like I’ve been taking care of my body. Having healthy skin is just as crucial as having the big white smile. I load up on my antioxidants, drinking green tea and taking my Omega 3 fish oils.”

What also makes her happy is being free and single after ending her marriage to One Tree Hill costar Chad Michael Murray in 2006 and two-year relationship with fellow actor Austin Nichols.

“I really like just enjoying my time in the moment,” she tells me. “Being in every day, not planning for tomorrow, not worrying about yesterday. It’s so lovely to just have time with my girlfriends and my family. But it’s really awkward to not be dating in Hollywood because whenever I get spotted anywhere with any of my guy friends, suddenly we’re madly in love or something. People misconstrue things so insanely. You realize you can’t win and you sort of have to let all that go and laugh about it at the end of the day.”

Upon leaving, I get a gift bag that includes Tone body wash in Exotic Fusions, Almond Milk and Sugar Glow, plus Almond Milk hand wash and Almond Milk body bars. All right!

OK! Interview: Lisa Goldstein

April 28th, 2008

The buzz around the current season of One Tree Hill – five-year flash-forward notwithstanding – may have been about Kevin Federline’s much-anticipated guest appearances, but there’s one person who’s causing more talk than K-Fed himself – Lisa Goldstein.

Doesn’t sound familiar?

That’s Millicent to you, Brooke’s (Sophia Bush) assistant who’s slowly winning over fans alike with her gentle, quirky, awkward ways and is one-half of the show’s newest “it” couple with the unlucky-in-love Mouth (Lee Norris).

“I think their relationship’s adorable and their characters are so innocent so I think it’s a good match,” Lisa tells OK! of her on-screen romance. “She kind of brings him back to the moral guy he was before he started sleeping with his boss.”

And the relationship is only going to get more serious – the two have already moved in together on the show and – spoiler alert! – will be one of the few couples spared drama come the season finale, Lisa teases.

“Mouth and Millicent are still together and they’re taking steps to further their relationship as the season goes on,” she says. “Everybody else is up in the air. Nobody knows what’s going to happen with Peyton and Lucas or Brooke and Lucas or Lindsey and Lucas nobody knows.”

What Lisa does know though is that she definitely will be returning for the CW drama’s sixth season next year, an unexpected development for her as Millicent was only planned for the season premiere. Charmed by early cuts of Lisa, the powers that be requested her role to be more than a one-time thing on One Tree Hill.

“They asked the writers if they wanted to start writing for me and they did,” she says. “And they did and I just kept coming back more and more first as a co-star and now I feel I’m at the top of the show.”

And why not? One Tree Hill is the actress’ first foray into television. A lifelong theater vet, Lisa, who spent the last few years performing stage productions of Disney films in Florida, landed the part of Millicent with relative ease.

“[My agent] called me and said I could either audition for the receptionist or the dorky assistant and I was like, ‘I’ll do the dorky assistant. It will be way more fun,’” she recounts. “We put the audition on tape and sent it up to Wilmington, N.C. and about a week later I totally forgot about and my agent called and said that I booked it. I was shocked!”

It was a different emotion when she first showed up on the set, walking into an already established series with a tight-knit cast.

“I didn’t know what to expect. I never been on a TV set before, but everyone was so nice and the nervousness kind of worked with the character I was doing that day so it was actually perfect,” Lisa says. “But everyone was so welcoming now I feel apart of the cast.”

Nowadays, Lisa is definitely feeling “part of the cast,” and just like their characters, she and Sophia have become BFFs off-screen as well.

“Sophia and I are actually going to get pedicures today. She’s a great person with a great heart and I’m lucky to have met her.”

One person she didn’t meet on set though? K-Fed. The aspiring rapper/actor had a three-episode arc on the show, but he and Lisa never crossed paths. However, he certainly exceeded everyone’s expectations.

"From what everybody says they were all really impressed with him he came everyday on time and prepared," she says. "Hilarie Burton was like, ‘He would know on my trailer door and run lines with me.’ He really wanted to do a good job. We were pleasantly surprised."
