Caroline Rhea ‘So Into Momminess’

July 6th, 2009 / Author: Valerie Nome

Caroline Rhea reaches into her purple purse to whip out a few 8×10 photos of her eight-month-old daughter Ava during a swank party held at NYC’s Le Parker Meridien.  In one, she’s wearing brown teddy bear ears.

She introduces me to boyfriend and father Costaki Economopoulos.

Clearly, motherhood agrees with the Sabrina, The Teenage Witch star.

“I love it,” the actress, 45, tells me. “It’s my favorite thing I’ve ever done. She’s the sweetest, loveliest … yeah. I guess I feel like somebody flipped a switch, and the whole world is in Technicolor now. It’s very exciting. I’m very sappy about it, but I adore her. I’m so into momminess.”

What precious moment can they share?

“She’s bound to laugh at everything we say,” Caroline says. “She’s an excellent audience.”

Costaki
adds, “I feel so bad, because people go ‘oh my God, she smiled at me.’ I go, ‘she smiles at everybody.’”

This summer, Caroline and Costaki look forward to taking Ava to the beach. “She’s going to discover sand.”

What makes him such a great dad?

“He loves it, and he loves her so much,” Caroline says. “I have the tiniest bit of resentment. His material is doing better with her than mine is. Yeah. He goes for the laugh, and then he repeats it over-and-over and over again. Like the tickling. I can’t stop squeezing her thighs. I can’t.”

They’re also perfect for each other.

“We’re both comics,” Costaki says. “Tell her our rule. We have a rule: it’s OK to be mean to each other as long as it’s funny.”

Caroline adds, “It’s a very tricky rule. As long as it’s funny. It’s a very fine line.”

As for wedding plans?  Costaki yuks, “Yes! I need health insurance.” Caroline slyly echoes, “He needs health insurance.”

Stars Share July Fourth Plans

July 2nd, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

Dancing With The Stars champ Shawn Johnson is gearing up for her annual holiday tradition.

“I have a Fourth of July play that we always go to, and I hang out with my family,” Shawn, 17, tells me. “It’s good.”

The gymnast looks forward to noshing on carmel ice cream, sitting by the pool and swimming this weekend. She says “I love massages. They’re relaxing.” She keeps her skin routine  “normal and natural” for summer, and “likes comfy clothes from the Victoria’s Secret Pink Collection. The sweats and stuff.”

On the other side of the coin is Margaret Cho, whose Lifetime show Drop Dead Diva premieres July 12.  “Oh I don’t really have a tradition,” the actress, 40, tells me. “I never go in the sun because I have a lot of tattoos, so that means Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day – I am not included.”

She calls her favorite tattoo “a little gun.”

“It’s a little pearl-handled pistol stuffed into a garter belt or a little garter around my left thigh, so that I’m always armed,” she says. “I don’t believe in guns, but I just think it’s a cool little gun.”

Jason Aldean will be performing in Canada, but he says his family typically heads to the beach. “I like down in the Destin, Florida, area,” the country singer, 32, whose kids are Keeley, 6, and Kendyl, 22 months, with wife Jessica, tells me. “The Panhandle. I grew up not far from there, and that’s where we always went when I was in school. Now that I’ve got my family, it’s a good family spot down there, and it’s probably the closest beach, too, which narrows it down. That’s where we always go. We go there every year, and have for years.”

Jessica Harp
enjoys the annual Fourth of July blowout.

“I love, love, love fireworks, but unfortunately in places in Tennessee, they’re illegal,” the country singer, 27, tells me. “I’m from Missouri originally and my parents have six acres. It was a tradition every year where all of our family and friends, we would go buy the big, big professional fireworks, and we would sit there for hours and shoot off fireworks. That’s one of my favorites.”

Happy Fourth of July, everyone!

Michael Jackson’s ‘Aura Was Mesmerizing’

July 1st, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

Taylor Dayne witnessed Michael Jackson at the height of his fame.

“I opened for him during his Bad tour in Europe,” the singer, 47, whose hits include I’ll Always Love You, With Every Beat of My Heart and Love Will Lead You Back, tells me. “It was 1988. I just had the #1 single throughout Europe — Tell It To My Heart — and Prove Your Love was climbing the charts in Europe and just breaking in the States. I played a month of dates at stadiums from Nice to Barcelona to Wertzberg, Germany. This was at the absolute height of Michael Mania.”

She says, “Michael was gracious to me. And extraordinary to watch as an entertainer, the mesmerizing effect his show and aura had on people. From his huge entourage and entire crew, his band who on backup was Sheryl Crow, to the dancers and production … it was a traveling circus and fun. I was the new sensation and [Michael’s manager] Frank DiLeo two years later began managing my career from meeting during that tour.”

SEE TAYLOR’S ‘I’LL BE THERE’ TRIBUTE TO MICHAEL JACKSON:

Beyond music, Taylor followed in Michael’s footsteps in at least three ways: She performed for President Bush (him, H.W.; her W.) , delivered her children through a surrogate and has copped to cosmetic enhancements.

Despite all her success, she calls the birth of her twins Astaria and Levi, 7, her proudest moment.

“They’re pretty divine,” she says. “They’re young. They’re blessings. I went for it, and I did it as a single mom. They’re precocious, alive, fantastic, thoughtful and every day they’re bringing home something new and different. I’m very proud of this achievement, and I’m very proud they chose me and I’m their mom.”

She stays true to her 80s roots by remaining friends with Paula Abdul, and holds onto her mementos.

“I have a couple of costumes,” she says. “I have that skirt from the Tell It To My Heart video, which is still a closet piece from living on Eighth Street and Second Avenue, Love Spit Love and all that stuff. God, you look around and you see your gold records and your platinums. Those are always prized possessions. Those are reminders.”

Michael Jackson Had ‘Unbelievable Energy’

June 30th, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

98 Degrees singer Jeff Timmons was lucky enough to perform for Michael Jackson twice.

“We did a show in NYC for Z100, and it was us [98 Degrees] and Beyonce, and they came back in the green room and said ‘rumor has it, Michael Jackson’s gonna be there, and they want you guys to sing a cover of Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,’” Jeff, 36, whose vocal group hit it big with hits including The Hardest Thing, Because Of You, I Do (Cherish You) and True To Your Heart, tells me.

“We all got up onstage and sang it, and then he came out and introduced himself to the crowd, and obviously the place erupted. The energy that came in with him when he stepped on the stage was unbelievable.”

What was Michael really like?

“He was a very nice guy, and polite,” Jeff says. “He was not a bit weird, like we had heard and seen him depicted as on television. He was just a nice guy. He was just really quiet.”

He also performed for Michael during VH1’s Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Special, The Solo Years filmed at NYC’s Madison Square Garden on September 10, 2001 – the last time 98 Degrees performed together.

“It was an honor,” Jeff says. “We met him briefly, and he thanked us for being part of the event. I was hoping for my next project, I’d have the opportunity to work with him, but unfortunately that’s not going to happen.”

Deborah Gibson Remembers Michael Jackson

June 29th, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

Deborah Gibson was one of the lucky stars to appear in Michael Jackson’s Liberian Girl video in 1989. (See clip!)

The onetime teen queen, 38, opens up about her experience with the King of Pop days after his tragic death at age 50.

“I met Michael and he told me he had just watched a Disney special I did,” Deborah, who topped the charts with Lost In Your Eyes, Foolish Beat, Shake Your Love, Out of The Blue and Only In My Dreams, tells me. “I was blown away by the thought of the Michael Jackson sitting there watching me on TV. He then invited me to be in his Liberian Girl video. I actually was one of the few who got to sing a little snippet live over his vocal. To say it was an honor is an understatement.”

Before the Long Island sensation caused a fashion craze of her own with her signature black hat in the late 1980s, she remembers emulating the musical genius.

“At 14, I had the red jacket and glove,” Deborah shares. “I was a huge fan. He was a sweet person and lived up to everything you wanted him to be when you met him. He had a receiving line an hour long before his concert at the Forum. To personally meet so many people and then put into his show the energy he put in was astounding.”

Her heart goes out to the Jackson family.

She says, “I don’t think it’s about the time someone is on earth but the impact they leave. He did more for humanity and for music in 50 years than anyone could. It’s a shock and I’m most saddened by the fact that a) I believe there was more music in him and b) he leaves behind three young children. Everyone feels this immeasurable loss. He was an American treasure.”

Michael Jackson Wowed ‘Mickey Mouse Club’

June 26th, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

Michael Jackson was a kid at heart, and stopped by the Mickey Mouse Club when it filmed at Florida’s Disney-MGM Studios in 1990.

Former Mouseketeers Damon Pampolina, Albert Fields and Chasen Hampton fondly remember the King of Pop’s visit. I caught up with the guys, all 34, one day after Michael’s shocking death at age 50.

Just before Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera joined, Damon, Albert and Chasen began making tunes as members of the show’s spinoff pop group The Party, which also included Deedee Magno and Tiffini Hale.

Michael’s style heavily influenced them, given that Damon’s renditions of Michael’s Another Part of Me and The Way You Make Me Feel scored him the coveted role on the Disney Channel show, and Albert hailed from Michael’s hometown of Gary, Indiana, and was a featured performer on Oprah Winfrey’s  AM Chicago. Chasen learned how to dance thanks to Michael’s trademark moves.

Michael came to the set of the Mickey Mouse Club when he was over at Disney,” Damon remembers. “They brought him over to say ‘hello’ to us, and we all got an autographed, personalized picture.”

It was a dream come true. The Houston, Texas, native vowed to his classmates he’d meet the Gloved One after he performed Billie Jean for his second grade talent show, and found his wish granted at age 12.

According to Damon, Michael’s security was tight. “It was very controlled. They built up a barrier – a wall – around our soundstage to where there was no way no one was going to enter.”

What was Michael really like?

“It was one of those weird things where you didn’t really think he existed because he was such an unbelievable performer,” Damon says. “You didn’t think he was human, and to see him was just like ‘oh my God, he exists.’ [laughs] It’s surreal. As a young kid, you think ‘maybe he’s not real.’ You think of him as a superhero. His skin was flawless. He looked exactly how you would see him on posters. The hat, the hair, the whole nine. It was a trip.”

Although the cast never got a photo with him, they did get autographs. Damon says the photos weren’t signed in front of them. “They took him somewhere, did it, and gave everybody one after the fact.”

He shares, “I have a framed autograph here in my possession. It was the same for everybody. It says, ‘To the Mouseketeers, my favorite club in the whole world, you all really inspire me. I love your wonderful show. All my love. I love you all. Michael Jackson.’”

Of their meeting, Damon says, “We got to shake his hand, that was it. He said ‘great to meet all you guys.’ I was pretty starstruck at the time. I certainly didn’t say anything.”

For Albert, who grew up in Michael’s hometown of Gary, Indiana, the interaction was more personal. He got 1:1 time with him backstage for about ten minutes.

“That was the first thing we touched on – ‘hey, I’m from Gary, too,’” Albert says. “It was amazing because he influenced me and everybody else, especially for me being where I’m from and my family witnessing him as a kid and going to school with his brothers and sisters. It was incredible, and he was cool, like ‘I enjoyed the show, I watch the show, and it’s cool to be here.’ Because he wanted to come and see us filming it. He said he loved the show and he liked what we did on there. The singing, dancing, acting. He said ‘you guys are triple threats.’ It was crazy. That was the conversation – ‘I’m your homeboy’ type thing.”

Albert
continues, “He did have something that was absolutely mesmerizing, even standing there – the sound of his voice. Everything about him was insane. It was a big thing to meet him and look him in the face. I’m not going to lie to you – it was a little weird. It was easy to get lost in his eyes and dream of puppies and rainbows.” He chuckles.

Disney and Michael Jackson were quite a pair. The King of Pop’s Captain Eo attraction was part of EPCOT, Disneyland and Tokyo Disneyland.

Albert says, “We all know that he was a fan of Disney and Peter Pan, so I think Michael Eisner or Jeffrey Katzenberg were with him at the time. They’re the ones who brought him over. And [Disney-]MGM Studios was new, so the Mickey Mouse Club was an attraction he wanted to see, seeing that the show was being filmed there.”

What more does he remember about his Michael encounter? Well, Albert says the King of Pop was taller than he expected and looked plastic.

“He shook my hand very soft,” Albert shares. “I didn’t like that. You know how people give you the soft hand? He did that. But other than that, I was in awe. But he was cool because he was down-to-earth. He was having a conversation that was genuinely happy. It was genuine when he was saying ‘I like what you do.’ It was happy.  And it wasn’t a creepy thing. He just had an aura like a vacuum that sucks you in, and you go ‘ahh! Wait a minute.’”

Chasen admits the day was one he will never forget.

“He was larger than life. He believed in the Disney Magic. He loved our show, and said he used to watch it every day he could. That alone made me bust at the seams with excitement. He was telling us that he was our fan. What power onstage, and such a beautiful man offstage. He was never scared to say what most of us won’t.”

Even though it was easy to see why Michael was drawn to the child stars since he was a child star himself, he was accused of child molestation three years after his visit.

“Nothing had surfaced about the allegations at the time, so we didn’t have any apprehension or ‘oh, this is weird,’” Damon says.

Albert says, “I never thought that he was a molester or pedophile or any of that craziness. He was a weird, eccentric cat because he never had a childhood. I thought people were trying to take advantage of him.”

He settled out of court in 1994, and was acquitted of all wrongdoing in a separate case in 2005.

What no one can take away from Michael is the “It” factor. “He was literally kissed by God to have that talent, ” Albert says.

Damon caught Michael performing on the 1984 Victory Tour and the 1987-1989 Bad Tour.

“There is absolutely no other performer on earth who can touch his magnetism, energy and danceability,” he says.  “But his showmanship live – if you haven’t seen it, I don’t know if it will ever exist again. And I’m not taking anything away from other artists – I’m a huge Prince fan, I’m a huge Beyonce fan, but as far as showmanship and the magnetism that he holds on that stage, it’ll never be touched. I don’t see it in our human lifetime – I don’t think it will ever be touched again. There’ll never be another Elvis. There will never be another Michael.”

Chasen now serves as music director for Rock Nation, an all-ages music school, and teaches many aspiring young musicians. “His autographed picture he gave me that day hangs above me there,” he says. “He is an inspiration to every kid walking in that school. I’m sure that would make him happy.”

Chasen adds, “Michael, thanks for my career in music, and for raising the bar in music and performance. Thank you for inspiring us not only in music, but in kindness and giving.”

Albert says, “He had that gift that most people don’t get. He was a very special person in that way. And he helped the world. That’s why everyone’s so impacted by his death. That’s very special.”

Rest in peace, Michael. You will forever be loved.

Cameron Diaz ‘Lucky’ For Hot Bod

June 25th, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

There’s something about Cameron Diaz during the My Sister’s Keeper premiere held Wednesday at NYC’s AMC Loews Lincoln Square.

Clad in a white J. Mendel frock, the buoyant bombshell radiates joy in every way from her wide smile to her easy laugh to her sparkling blue eyes. She towers over everyone, and her deep tan and fire-engine red lipstick simply heighten the glamour.

How does the actress, 36, stay trim?

“I guess I’m just lucky,” she laughs, attributing her bod to that old standby — genetics.

In this medical drama opening Friday, Cameron plays mom to a daughter suffering from leukemia. To save her child, Cameron gives birth to another daughter, played by Abigail Breslin, who is forced to endure medical tests to save her sister until one day, Abigail’s character says “no” and seeks medical emancipation.

“Mothers are goddesses,” Cameron says. Her own family was on hand when she received her star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame this week. “Family’s everything. They’re the most important things to me, absolutely.”

One thing Cameron likes to do for her family is cook, and co-star Heather Wahlquist admits she makes a mean guacamole. “She cooks very healthy, with a lot of garlic and olive oil,” she tells me. “She gave me one good tip: if you get garlic on your fingers – it smells because you cook with garlic – then you can take stainless steel, and rub your fingers on it, and it goes away.”

Cameron’s co-stars can’t stop gushing about her.

Thomas Dekker tells me, “She’s like an old movie star. She has that bubbly, charismatic movie star presence, and then she can turn around and do something. It’s surprising how good she is in this film. I think all the people who were like ‘she’s the wrong choice,’ once they see it, they’ll be amazed.”

Director Nick Cassavetes, who also helmed The Notebook, was responsible for making sure Cameron didn’t cry throughout the film, which was nearly impossible, the actress admits.

Nick tells me, “I was surprised by what a great woman she was. I didn’t think she went that deep. It’s not because she’s Cameron Diaz, but when you know someone, you’re like ‘hey, how are you? What’s going on? Ho-ho-ho, hee-hee-hee.’ We really had to go there for this one, and I was surprised by how still her water was.”

There’s Abigail, 13, who is all gussied up in monster heels. A woman shrieks and gives her a hug. Her looks aren’t the only way in which she’s mature.

“She’s so smart for her age, and she knows what she wants,” costar Evan Ellingson tells me. “She uses big words. She’s smarter than I am right now, and I’m 20 years old.”

She also has a child’s side.

Heather, who plays her aunt, says, “The funny thing about Abigail is when she’s on set, she’s a serious person who gets into her character and knows exactly what she’s doing, but when it’s over, she’s a kid again. We put together this puzzle that we couldn’t wait … they’d say ‘cut!’ and we’d be like ‘yes!’ and running back to finish our puzzle. It was fun.”

My Sisters Keeper opens Friday.

Sophia Bush: My Dogs Are Like My Kids

June 24th, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

Sophia Bush gushes about her new dog, Penny, during the reception for her coming-of-age drama The Narrows held at NYC’s Bottino. Noshing on appetizers including grilled shrimp with garlic, grapes and cheese and a turkey wrap, the One Tree Hill beauty, 26, admits she recently purchased chew toys for her pups Patch, and new addition Penny.

“She’s another rescue pitbull,” Sophia tells me in her signature rasp. “She was a few days away from being euthanized at the pound. She’s amazing. She’s the first dog I’ve come across in all this time that I’ve been thinking about getting a dog so that Patch has a companion that really reminds me of him. They have really kindred spirits. She’s a puppy, but there’s a lot of life in her eyes. She’s a very old dog. I know that might sound strange to call a dog an old soul, but she is. She’s really special, and they’re just in love with each other, so it’s a good match.”

Patch and Penny are lucky pups.

“My dogs are absolutely spoiled. They come to work with me every day. We’re never apart — ever. I take them everywhere I go. We hike, and we go to the beach. I pile them in the bed. I think, with animals, they encourage a pure showering of love, and I really like that.”

Sophia, who divorced One Tree Hill co-star Chad Michael Murray in 2006, finds that her puppies are preparing her for motherhood.

“Having a pet is a big responsibility. It’s like being a parent. Granted, they’re not as intense obviously as children, they’re very similar. My animals are like my kids for me, and your life — your schedule — revolves around what they need.”

She adds, “When I travel, I always have to take the dogs into consideration. ‘Where are they going to stay? How are they going to fly? Where are we going to go? Are we going to fly or are we going to drive?’ It’s a very big commitment, but I think it’s incredibly rewarding.”

Sophia’s protective side comes out when her animals are involved.

“It’s an interesting thing for me because I’m a very laidback chill person but if someone ever hurt my dogs, it would be over.”

How Whoopi Overcame Her Fear of Flying

June 23rd, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

Whoopi Goldberg flew for the first time in thirteen years thanks to Virgin Atlantic’s Flying Without Fear program.

In April, the View co-host, 53, ditched the bus she had been riding since 1996 and hopped on a transatlantic flight.

“They have a program over in the U.K., which helps people get over the fear of flying,” she tells me during Virgin Atlantic’s Red Hot 25th Birthday Party held at NYC’s Tribeca Rooftop on Monday. “I thought it was B.S., and then they came, and I did it for four or five hours with them, and went to London to see the first rehearsals for Sister Act.”

How did she get over her flying fears?

“They have a pilot, a psychologist and somebody who’s been through the program, and they spend the time with you, and it’s really extraordinary, so for the first time in thirteen years, I flew.”

Whew! The Oscar-and-Emmy winner once admitted to Jay Leno that it takes 42 hours of nonstop bus travel to get from NYC-L.A.
