Backstage at Z100’s Jingle Ball

December 15th, 2008

Katy Perry sniffs her armpits when she’s offered a membership to New York Health and Racquet Club during the H&M Artist Gift Lounge held Friday before Z100’s Jingle Ball in NYC.

The I Kissed A Girl singer says gift lounges are one of the best perks of being famous.

“You want to leave a Paul Newman legacy,” she tells me. “We get a lot of stuff, and we get to give it back. I know that my girlfriend backstage has a real cracked-out Blackberry, and I got a new Blackberry. She’s getting it.”

As members of Paramore shop around, Sean Paul tells me he can’t wait to use the SodaStream soda maker, Canon PowerShot digital camera and Blackberry Pearl Flip Smartphone in the recording studio.

I bump into Brody Jenner in the hallway before the Madison Square Garden concert featuring Kanye West, Rihanna, Chris Brown and Leona Lewis begins. He had a last-minute wardrobe switcheroo. “I had my Dickies on before I came here, and my manager told me to take them off and put my jeans on,” he says.

Ashley Tisdale enters the press room, sporting brunette locks instead of her trademark blonde. How does being a brunette compare to being a blonde?

“I’m naturally brunette, so I feel back to myself, I guess,” the High School Musical star tells me. “Being blonde, it was so much fun. I think blondes and brunettes have so much fun, but I feel like Sharpay really owns the blonde, so I kind of feel back to Ashley in a way, so it’s exciting.”

Ne-Yo plays it cool when asked what he thinks about the rumor that Rihanna is expecting with boyfriend Chris Brown.

“Really?!” he says. “That’s a new one on me. I just heard that. OK. If she is, congratulations, and if she isn’t  — come on guys, cut it out.” (Psst. Eyewitness acccount: Her stomach is totally flat.)

David Archuleta
giggles through American Idol questions, but when Hayley Williams of Paramore is asked to pose alone for a fashion shot, she declines. “I’m not very fashionable,” she shrugs, ducking off with the boys. (Hm, Demi Lovato would disagree.)

Veronicas singer Lisa Origliasso says they taught the Jonas Brothers “everything they know” when the boys opened for the girl group in 2006.

“I think people look at them like they’re good boys, and they are good boys, but they’re very rock-and-roll,” her twin Jessica Origliasso tells me.

Here is Lady GaGa, who looks like a Muppet in her long blonde hair and super-long eyelashes. “It’s not a persona,” she tells me. “This is who I really am — in all my origami glory.”

Up next is Jesse McCartney, who plays coy when it comes to dating. “The microphone has been my girlfriend for the last year,” he says. “I haven’t really done much.”

Get this — Brandy doesn’t want to leave the press room when she’s asked to move along. Her new Rodney Jerkins-produced single is called Right Here (Departed). “It’s about being there for the people that you love,” she says. “Everybody needs somebody, so I thought it was a great song to reintroduce me back to the world.”

Julia Roberts: Still a Pretty Woman

October 29th, 2008

It’s hard to believe Julia Roberts is over 40–but on Oct. 27, the flame-haired beauty celebrated her 41st birthday (which is actually on the 28th)  a day early with a star-studded party in San Francisco.

Accompanied by her hubby Danny Moder, Roberts proved she was still the one and only Pretty Woman as she welcomed celebrity guests to a dinner party on the patio of Jardiniere Restaurant.  Those in attendance included heavyweights Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, Bruce Willis, Jack Nicholson, Sean Penn and Robin Wright Penn, Billy Crystal, Danny Devito and Casey Affleck, who serenedaded Happy Birthday to the Oscar winning actress.

It was a bittersweet night for the group, who was in San Francisco to support the late Paul Newman fundraiser (planned months before his death) in aid of California camp The Painted Turtle at Davies Symphony Hall.

An eyewitness tells OK! that Julia’s birthday bash went well into the wee hours of the morning. Party guests finally started trickling out around 1:30 a.m.

"All the guests were in a good mood," a fellow diner tells OK!. "Billy Crystal’s wife was a little nervous to leave the restaurant because a crowd had formed out front, but Billy told her, ‘Julia just left, we’ll be fine!’"

Paul Newman Remembered

October 1st, 2008

Friends of Paul Newman are paying tribute to the beloved actor, philanthropist and devoted family man who lost his battle against cancer on Sept. 26 at the age of 83.

“There is a point where feelings go beyond words. I have lost a real friend,” said Robert Redford, the legend’s Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid co-star, adding, “My life — and this country — is better for his being in it.”

George Clooney
also praised the actor, who was famous for his blue eyes.

“He set the bar too high for the rest of us. Not just actors, but all of us. He will be greatly missed.”

In a statement, his daughter expressed the family’s feelings over his passing, saying:

“Paul Newman played many unforgettable roles. But the ones for which he was proudest never had top billing on the marquee.

Devoted husband.
Loving father.
Adoring grandfather.
Dedicated philanthropist.

Our father was a rare symbol of selfless humility, the last to acknowledge what he was doing was special.  Intensely private, he quietly succeeded beyond measure in impacting the lives of so many with his generosity.

Always and to the end, Dad was incredibly grateful for his good fortune.  In his own words: “It’s been a privilege to be here.”

He will be profoundly missed by those whose lives he touched, but he leaves us with extraordinary inspiration to draw upon.

During this difficult time, we ask for privacy for our family.”

Paul Newman Dies at 83

September 27th, 2008

Paul Newman, the Academy-Award winning legend who electrified the silver screen with his rugged good looks and piercing blue eyes, personifying cool with films like Cool Hand Luke and The Color of Money,  has died.  He was 83.

Newman passed away Friday after a long battle with cancer at his farmhouse near Westport, Conneticut, his publicist said.  He was surrounded by his family and close friends.

As the sad news began to reach his fans, Paul’s daughter released a heartfelt statement to OK! about her beloved father:

In May, Newman had dropped out of a fall production of Of Mice and Men which he planned to direct, citing unspecified health issues.

Paul Newman was an actor, an avid race car enthusiast and an entrepreneur with a soft spot for the underpriviledged.  He gave tens of millions to charities through his food company, setting up camps for severely ill children.

He got his start in theater and on television during the 1950s, and went on to become one of the world’s most enduring and popular film stars, a legend held in awe by his peers. He was nominated for 10 Oscars, winning one regular award and two honorary ones, and had major roles in more than 50 motion pictures, including Exodus, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Verdict, The Sting and Absence of Malice.

He sometimes teamed with his wife and fellow Oscar winner, Joanne Woodward, with whom he had one of Hollywood’s rare long-term marriages.

”I have steak at home, why go out for hamburger?” Newman famously told Playboy magazine when asked if he was tempted to stray.

Married since 1958, the year they both appeared in The Long Hot Summer, Newman directed Woodward in several films, including Rachel, Rachel and The Glass Menagerie.

Despite his solid marriage, Newman remained an undeniable heartthrob, thrilling audiences and critics with his choice of films.  He loved to play against his classic good looks, playing rebels, tough guys and losers.

”I was always a character actor,” he once said. ”I just looked like Little Red Riding Hood.”

He won an honorary Oscar in 1986 ”in recognition of his many and memorable compelling screen performances and for his personal integrity and dedication to his craft.”   A year later he took home his first competitive Oscar for The Color of Money.

In 1994, Newman won a third Oscar, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, for his charitable work.

His most recent Oscar nod was for best supporting actor in the 2002 film Road to Perdition.

By the time he turned 80, Newman was still in high demand, winning an Emmy and a Golden Globe for the 2005 HBO film, Empire Falls and providing the voice of a 1951 car in the Disney-Pixar hit, Cars.

But in May of 2007, Newman told Good Morning America that he had given up acting but planned to remain active in his charity projects.

”I’m not able to work anymore as an actor at the level I would want to,” he said. ”You start to lose your memory, your confidence, your invention. So that’s pretty much a closed book for me.”

Martha Stewart: Paul Newman is “Fine”

June 17th, 2008

Despite reports that Paul Newman battling lung cancer, Martha Stewart says the actor is "fine."

"He was fine. He was fine," she tells Extra. "He’s 83 years old and hes a phenomenal creature. I mean, my God. [He's] still racing cars."

The cancer talk started last month after Paul pulled out of a stage production citing an undisclosed illness and days later showed up looking gaunt in a photo on Martha’s blog. But while many were shocked at the Oscar winner’s frail state, Martha wasn’t one of them.

"There was a big uproar because a lot of people haven’t seen him, I guess," she says.

Paul’s longtime friend A.E. Hotchner later told the AP that the legendary star did have cancer, but has since stated that he was misquoted. Whatever the case is, both A.E. and Martha do agree on one thing — Paul is still living life.

"He is non-stop and he was just as lively and enthusiastic about everything he does," Martha says.

Friend: Paul Newman Has Cancer

June 11th, 2008

Although his rep has denied it, a longtime friend of Paul Newman’s says the actor does have cancer.

Writer A.E. Hotchner, a neighbor of Paul’s and his Newman’s Own business partner, tells the Associated Press that the Oscar winner shared the news with him about 18 months ago.

”I know that it’s a form of cancer,” he tells the AP. ”It’s a form of cancer and he’s dealing with it.”

He declined to specify what type, but early reports claim Paul, a lifelong smoker, is battling lung cancer. A.E. fuels the flame more by revealing that the 83-year-old underwent an operation a few years ago.

”It was certainly somewhere in the area of the lung," he says.

As for Paul’s status now, A.E. says, "Everybody is hopeful. That’s all we know. He’s doing all the right stuff. Paul is a fighter. He seems to be going through a good period right now."

Concern over the star’s health peaked in the last month after he dropped out of his Westport, Conn. hometown’s production of Our Town, which he was to direct, citing illness, and appeared gaunt at recent events, including the Indy500.

On Tuesday, Paul’s rep said the cancer reports are "not true," but also cryptically said he was "doing nicely."

Denied: Paul Newman Cancer Reports “Not True”

June 10th, 2008

Paul Newman does not have cancer, his rep says.

Reports that the iconic film legend is not battling terminal lung cancer are "not true," the actor’s rep Toni Howard says, shooting down a month’s worth of rumors.

Whispers of a life-threatening disease started in May when the 83-year-old citied illness for pulling out of directing duties at his Westport, Conn. hometown’s production of Our Town.

The rest snowballed from there. Subsequent stories reported the Oscar winner, a lifelong smoker, was diagnosed at New York’s Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and was being treated as an outpatient.
