Maggie Gyllenhaal Turns on the Charm

October 6th, 2009 / Author: Valerie Nome

an education prem nyc 051009Maggie Gyllenhaal swans into the New York Film Festival premiere of An Education held Monday at NYC’s Paris Theater wearing a strapless black pantsuit that shows off her toned shoulders. She greets two guests with kisses on the cheek, and gleefully strikes up conversations.

When opening remarks take place, she peers into the theater from her post in the hallway, and I catch a glimpse of her sparkling right-hand diamond ring.

The towering, blue-eyed beauty pumps her fist, and gives a supportive “woo-hoo” to cheer on husband Peter Sarsgaard, who stars in the film as a 30-something man attempting to seduce a 16-year-old girl away from her education and into his glitzy world of classical concerts, art auctions and late-night dinners.

Tonight, her only role is to be a loving wife. Read more »

Maggie Gyllenhaal & Peter Sarsgaard Wed

May 4th, 2009

Longtime couple Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard have gone that extra step and made their union official on paper: The two were married in Brindisi Italy on Saturday. Maggie’s famous bro Jake Gyllenhaal and his lady Reese Witherspoon were in attendance at the ceremony in a small chapel.

Peter’s rep tells OK!: "We are happy to confirm that Maggie and Peter were married on Saturday, May 2."

Maggie and Peter have been dating since 2002, and have a two-and-a-half year old daughter together, Ramona. The twosome announced their engagement in April 2006. They starred together in 2003 indie flick In God’s Hands. Peter was nominated for a Golden Globe in 2004 for Shattered Glass and also appeared alongside Maggie’s brother Jake in Jarhead.

Maggie is also an indie darling, starring in Donnie Darko, Sherrybaby and Secretary, as well as blockbuster Dark Knight.

Maggie Gyllenhaal Talks Motherhood

January 27th, 2009

Maggie Gyllenhaal stumps for Fisher-Price during the launch of their Precious Planet line held Tuesday at Central Park Zoo in NYC.

The animal-friendly line includes a high chair, gym, cradle swing, bouncer, Jumperoo, potty, tub and bedding featuring baby animals like monkeys, giraffes and polar bears.

The actress, 31, is on hand to make a  $250,000 contribution to the Wildlife Conservation Society on behalf of the toy company.

“I had one of those portable Fisher-Price tape players, and I remember listening to Cyndi Lauper while I walked around the neighborhood, so I’m thrilled to join forces with them in presenting this generous donation to the Wildlife Conservation Society,” she says.

Being aware of the outdoors is something she encourages in her own family, which includes Ramona, 15 months, and fiancé of three years Peter Sarsgaard.

“I think especially in New York City, and Brooklyn, where I live, it’s very important to encourage children to learn about and be part of nature. It’s difficult to find that in the City.”

She continues, “I know from my own childhood that connecting with nature has changed the way I look at the world and what’s important to me, so I think it’s important to introduce kids to wildlife and animals, and show them how we can and must coexist. They are learning to respect the planet, which is incredibly important now.”

Giving daughter Ramona time to be a kid is a top priority for Maggie. She won’t allow her daughter to become a child actor.

“I don’t think children should be working,” she tells me. “It doesn’t make sense to me. But my child, when she grows up, can do whatever she wants. But not as a child, no. It’s fun to do it [say lines] once or twice, but then you have to do it ten more times and it’s work. I don’t think kids should be working.”

On the way out, I pick up the first gift bag my newborn niece will receive. It includes a Fisher-Price Stay-in-Place Sun Shade, Comfy Covers – cushioned seat belt covers, Bath Mirror and an adorable Precious Planet blanket. Aww!

Motherhood Inspired Maggie Gyllenhaal to Work

July 11th, 2008

Many new moms would prefer an extended maternity leave to spend time with their children over going back to work, but not Maggie Gyllenhaal.

The Dark Knight star got right back in the swing of things seven months after giving birth to now-21-month-old Ramona, her daughter with fiancé Peter Sarsgaard.

"You see women who don’t go back to work at all after they have a baby. I have felt in the past few months incredibly inspired and I really want to work," Maggie tells Parade.com. "I feel like I have something new to say having spent this time with my daughter. I’m just looking for the right things to say it in."

Though she was excited to get back on a movie set, Maggie’s mind was more often on Ramona than nailing big scenes with Christian Bale and Heath Ledger.

"A big portion of my mind was with her always," she says. "But it was kind of a great job for a new mother because I’d work a couple of days and then have a week off. I had a lot of time to be with her."

While some parents may be wary of doing stunts lest something happen to them, Maggie didn’t back down from performing them in the Batman Begins sequel. The 30-year-old replaces Katie Holmes — who gave her blessing to Maggie — as A.D.A. Rachel Dawes in the thriller and, in one scene, plummets from a skyscraper.

"It was the first time I’ve ever done a stunt. And it was great," Maggie says. "It was fun being dropped from a building. I wasn’t scared, I just did it."
