Rachel McAdams Votes Ben Affleck

April 14th, 2009

Move over, Arnold Schwarzenegger, there are other movie stars possibly looking to take the leap into politics!

It’s no secret that Ben Affleck is enthusiastic about his political beliefs, campaigning for John Kerry in 2004 and Barack Obama in 2008. He’s even discussed running for office at some point. And now his co-star in the upcoming flick State of Play, Rachel McAdams, says he’s got her support.

"I hope he does go into politics," she tells MovieFone in a new interview. "I think he would be great. And I think he’d be a real asset to the country."

Even though Rachel can’t vote in the U.S. – she’s a Canadian citizen – she says she’d help her pal out on the campaign trail and would vote for him if she could.

"I would wear a big ‘Vote for Ben’ sticker," she jokes.

Bristol Palin & Levi Johnston Welcome a Son

December 29th, 2008

Bristol Palin, the 18-year-old daughter of former republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, has given birth to a son, Tripp Easton Mitchell Johnston. Bristol, who’s teenage pregnancy was almost as famous as Tina Fey’s impression of her mother, gave birth on Sunday in Palmer, Alaska. The healthy baby weighed in at 7 lb.s, 4 oz.

"We think it’s wonderful," said Colleen Jones, the sister of Bristol’s grandmother Sally Heath, who confirmed the news. "The baby is fine and Bristol is doing well. Everyone is excited."

The baby’s father and Bristol’s fiance, Levi Johnston, is an apprentice electrician and former Wasilla High School hockey player. He and Bristol have been dating for three years and became engaged earlier this year. The couple plans to wed in 2009 and raise their child together.

Bristol is the oldest of Sarah and Todd Palin’s three daughters (The couple also have two sons). When news of her pregnancy hit last summer, shortly after John McCain picked Governor Palin to be his running mate, the Palins said their daughter "came to us with news that we as parents knew would make her grow up faster than we’d ever planned."

They added Bristol "has our unconditional love and support."

Elisabeth Hasselbeck: No Post-Show Fight

November 2nd, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

The screaming, fights and tears reached new heights on the Oct. 23 episode of The View — culminating in rumors of a post-show fight between Elisabeth Hasselbeck and her liberal co-host Joy Behar. But the embattled Republican insists the women have “unconditional love for each other.”

“Everything is great off set,” Elisabeth told OK! at the Wall Street Boxing Charity Championship in NYC on Oct. 23. Denying reports that Joy verbally attacked her, Elisabeth adds, “It can get a little uncomfortable, and we’re not afraid to be that way.”

Tensions seemed to be running high lately for the ladies, especially with the election heating up in the last few weeks, but Joy echoes her co-host, telling Larry King on Oct. 26, “I’m so tired of saying we’re friends off the air, but it really is true.”

Whoopi: No Trouble in View

October 24th, 2008

Despite heated on-air election arguments between Republican Elisabeth Hasselbeck and her more liberal co-hosts, Joy Behar, Whoopi Goldberg, Sherri Shepherd and Barbara Walters, one of the ladies on ABC’s The View says the political feuding isn’t personal.

"What we want the viewers to understand.is that you can disagree with your friends, loved ones and not make it personal," Whoopi tells Extra at a signing for her new children’s book, Plum Fantastic: Sugar Plum Ballerinas. "In spite of what anybody reads or says, there are no personal digs taken at that table."

Whoopi goes on to add that she hopes viwers will "stop listening for trouble and hear what we are talking about."

Attacking someone else on-air because of their beliefs isn’t what The View is all about, Whoopi reiterates.

"If we had personal things to deal with we would talk on a one-on-one basis," she says. "Listen to us as we speak, not as other people interpret us."

Elisabeth Hasselbeck: Four Against One

October 22nd, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

As election season heats up, it’s not a case of John McCain battling Barack Obama, it’s Elisabeth Hasselbeck against the ladies of The View!

Elisabeth has always been the lone Republican voice arguing against her more liberal-minded co-hosts, Joy Behar, Barbara Walters, Sherri Shepherd and Whoopi Goldberg, but in recent weeks things have turned increasingly ugly.

“The set was tense,” audience member Steve Bond tells OK! of the Oct. 16 taping he attended. “Elisabeth looked pretty stressed out.”

“Barbara was saying, ‘Okay, girls, calm down,’ ” adds audience member Arlene Kryger.

Alison Davis, a New Jersey social worker who attended the same taping, concurs. “I always feel bad for Elisabeth. She’s sweet and so pretty and she can’t get a word in edgewise. It’s four to one.”

While mom-of-two Elisabeth insists she “loves her ladies,” she still remains the odd woman out.

“The only time the panel members were together was when the cameras were rolling,” audience member Marsha Kunselman, who was also at the show, tells OK!. “Elisabeth was always alone during breaks.”

But the drama is set to continue until Election Day. After Whoopi asked on the Oct. 17 show if Elisabeth was defecting to Fox News, she confirmed, “I’m not going anywhere! I love Fox, but I’m staying here. I’m not leaving The View."

Kirsten Dunst’s Call to Action

October 20th, 2008

With only two weeks left before Election Day, even celebs are ramping up their last-minute campaigns to get fans to the polls on Nov. 4.

In the latest example of a famous face pushing for votes, Kirsten Dunst stars in a quick spot on MySpace, with her face blurred out and voice lowered for "anonymity,"urging viewers to log on to WhyTuesday.org to find their local polling place.

"What matters is that you vote on Tuesday, November 4th," she says, without endorsing a candidate, adding that America ranks towards the bottom in voter turnout.

"Come on, let’s bring it on and do this," Kirsten urges towards the end of the 40-second spot, just before her face is briefly unobscured.

Diablo Cody: Influence Broker?

October 16th, 2008

With the election around the corner and the media spotlight on republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, Juno writer and director Diablo Cody has found her 2007 hit back in the spotlight amidst controversy surrounding the teen pregnancy of Palin’s daughter, Bristol.

"I was getting contacted by so many people regarding the plight of young pregnancy that I was beginning to think I was the leading obstetrician in this country or something," Diablo said at the MTV Networks Election Effect Panel Discussion in NYC.

She laughed off questions about her teen comedy "glamorizing teen pregnancy."

"If I would have know that I wielded that kind of power, I would have written a movie called Don’t Vote for McCain," Diablo joked.

Since Juno’s release, the surprise hit has grossed nearly $144 million domestically on a mere $7.5 million budget. The coming of age film staring Ellen Page and Michael Cera has been thrust into debates surrounding the election, but Diablo says that was never her intention.

"For me it was not political propaganda in any way," she tells OK!. "What’s strange to me is that anybody’s even asking my opinion. I wrote a movie. It was just a story and it’s strange to me that it’s become this sort of totem for teen pregnancy.

"The key thing that people tend to overlook is that Juno gives the baby up for adoption, she adds. "These girls that are being used as examples in the media are keeping the babies and becoming teen mothers. That is a very different thing."

Although Diablo would rather keep her Oscar-winning movie out of elections discussion, she has no problem speaking out about her own political views.

"I think Sarah Palin is creepy actually," Diablo says. "Creepier than McCain. But you know I think my beliefs have been very liberal my entire life, so naturally I’m voting for Obama. I used to think that McCain wouldn’t make a bad President to be honest, but I think this election has exposed so much ugliness that its just cemented my beliefs."

Following Juno’s comedic success, Cody’s decided to take a career turn by writing the horror movie Jennifer’s Body, which stars sexy starlet Megan Fox and is planned for a 2009 release.

"It’s a downer but it’s really fun," Diablo reveals. "I say Juno is life affirming and my next movie is death affirming."

Gossip Girl Stars in Pro-Obama Ad

October 14th, 2008

Airing nationally on MTV, Comedy Central and during Gossip Girl, as well as on YouTube, Penn Badgley and Blake Lively star in a new pro-Barack Obama ad made by MoveOn.org. The spot parodies anti-drug PSAs, urging viewers to "talk to their parents" about voting for John McCain.

Directed by Bourne Identity’s Doug Liman, the 30-second commercial features the Gossip Girl stars, as well as other young actors warning of the consequences of voting for the Republican presidential nominee.

"This will be the most important election of our lifetimes when you think about what is at stake. Young people get it, they are voting overwhelmingly for Barack Obama," says director Doug Liman. "Too many of their parents are still on the fence and I thought it was important to make this ad and let my generation and older generations know that the younger generation is clear: they want a future and a country led by Barack Obama."

"Mom? Dad?  I found THIS in your room," says Penn in the spot as he holds up a "Drill Baby Drill!" hat.

"Just because other people your age are doing it, doesn’t make it cool," says another actor of voting for McCain.

"And if you’re ever out somewhere and you’re considering voting McCain, just call me.  I’ll pick you up.  No questions asked," Blake implores the camera.

Sarah & Todd Palin’s Love

September 10th, 2008

In 1988, Sarah and Todd Palin said "I do" in a local courthouse in Palmer, Alaska. Twenty years later, the Republican Vice Presidential nominee told America at the Republican National Convention just how much she still loves her husband.

“We met in high school, and two decades and five children later, he’s still my guy!” Sarah said during her vice presidential acceptance speech.

And although the Palin’s family life is sparking controversy — teenage daughter Bristol is pregnant and engaged, and rumors that Sarah had an affair with her husband’s former business partner, though strongly denied, continue to swirl — it’s clear the VP candidate and her “guy” have stayed together through good times and bad.

“Sarah and Todd met in high school,” her good friend and biographer, Kaylene Johnson, author of Sarah, tells OK!. “Sarah was attracted to Todd because he appeared so grown up. He was already a commercial fisherman.”

The people who know them best don’t buy the tale of infidelity. “They’re radiant when they talk about each other,” says Kaylene. “Their love hasn’t dimmed.”

Paris the Professional

August 6th, 2008

That Paris Hilton sure can deliver a line!

A day after she released a mock presidential campaign ad spoofing John McCain, the Web Site that posted it revealed the heiress shot the entire skit without the help of cue-cards.

In other words, she memorized the entire skit. What can we say? Paris Hilton is ready for her close-up Mr. Demille!

The spoof, posted on the Web Site Funnyordie.com, features Paris detailing her energy plan while lounging on a pool chaise in a leopard print bathing suit.

The site’s co-founder Adam McKay came up with the concept for a mock ad starring Hilton, which has received over 3 million views since it was posted Tuesday.

”Adam thought it would be really funny to get Paris to respond to the John McCain ad that featured her,” Funny or Die content director Amy Rhodes told The Associated Press on Wednesday. ”

Adam contacted Paris directly, and she agreed to do it. He wrote the sketch. And she really, really loved it.”

McCain’s original campaign ad used an image of Paris to mock Democratic nominee Barack Obama as an international celebrity.
