Gotham Independent FIlm Awards Noms

October 20th, 2008

The IFP already announced earlier this year that Penélope Cruz would be receiving a tribute at this year’s Gotham Independent Film Awards, and now the rest of the nominees have been announced.

Topping the list with four noms is little-known Ballast, while Rachel Getting Married, Synecdoche, New York and Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona have all received two nominations.

Penélope and her Vicky Cristina Barcelona castmates, Javier Bardem, Rebecca Hall and Scarlett Johansson will be going up against Anne Hathaway and Rosemarie DeWitt in Rachel Getting Married – both are nominated for Best Ensemble Performance.

Hopefully Michelle Williams will be crossing her fingers for new beau Spike Jonze, their film Synecdoche, New York, which he produced, is up for both Best Feature and Best Ensemble Performance.

Anne’s Ex Wants Less Prison Time

October 15th, 2008

Anne Hathaway’s ex-boyfriend Italian businessman Raffaello Follieri, who pleaded guilty in September to orchestrating fraudulent schemes involving the Vatican, wants his deportation to Italy sped up and his prison sentence reduced to three years. He was originally sentenced to five years and three months under his plea deal, according to Reuters.

Raffaello’s lawyer filed the memo on Tuesday, saying he should be sent back to his own country.

"To say his hopes and dreams of building a thriving business in the United States has been a disaster is an understatement," Reuters quotes his lawyer Flora Edwards as saying. "There is no danger he will ever return to this country."

Anne has been speaking publicly about her ex of four years, including joking about the situation in her opening monologue as the host of SNL a few weeks ago and opening up in an interview on Good Morning America.

"What’s the right thing to do? Do you talk about it? It’s the elephant in the room," she said on GMA. "I think it’s better to let everyone know that I’m OK. I’m trying to move on and have a sense of humor about everything."

Anne Hathaway Jealous of Tina Fey

October 7th, 2008

Things have been looking up for Anne Hathaway lately: her performance in new movie Rachel Getting Married is getting good reviews, she’s moving on from ex Raffaello Follieri and most recently, her hosting gig on Saturday Night Live went over well.

However the 25-year-old, who says she’s received "positive feedback" from the show, admits there was one thing missing from her SNL stint – she wanted to impersonate Sarah Palin during the opening sketch.

“I was jealous because I wanted to do that," she told Extra last night at Elle magazine’s 15th Annual Woman in Hollywood Tribute. "But you can’t. Tina Fey owns that.”

And while Tina as Sarah Palin is most likely here to stay, at least until after the elections, Anne definitely held her own as host, even joking about her ex-boyfriend’s troubles with the law and their subsequent breakup during her opening monologue.

For more of Anne’s interview with Extra, tune in tonight!

Anne Hathaway: “I’m Trying to Move On”

October 2nd, 2008

While Anne Hathaway’s newest movie role has her playing a character recovering from drug problems, the Rachel Getting Married star has her own troubles to recover from, after her ex-boyfriend Raffaello Follieri was arrested in June on fraud charges.

"It’s interesting to play a character who everybody knows the unsavory details of her life," she tells Good Morning America in an interview this morning. "And here I am, promoting this character, when obviously, things that I prefer to remain private are kind of out there."

The brunette beauty was honest when asked about what she’s learned from her ordeal, saying that wasn’t something she’s ready to discuss with the world.

"I do believe – I suppose if anything – the thing that I learned is there’s a journey," she reveals. "And there’s never going to be a point that you have figured everything out, no matter how dramatic the things that have happened to you are."

While most women her age don’t have a successful film career, it’s also unlikely they’ve found themselves in a similar situation to Anne, something that she says she’s also learned from.

"I’m really honoring the fact that I’m 25 years old and I was really surprised by a situation," she says. "I have a lot of people that love me, that have protected me, that were trying to protect me before and are doing even more now."

So how is she coping with the buzz surrounding her ex’s legal troubles, while still goign forward with her own life and career? Anne says she’s just going to press ahead despite the scandal.

"What’s the right thing to do? Do you talk about it? It’s the elephant in the room," she confesses. "I think it’s better to let everyone know that I’m OK. I’m trying to move on and have a sense of humor about everything."

Anne Hathaway Turns Out For ‘Rachel Getting Married’

September 25th, 2008

Anne Hathaway smiles brightly during her Toronto International Film Festival premiere of Rachel Getting Married, which is held at Roy Thomson Hall.

What’s her secret to looking so good? “Hire the right people,” she gamely answers, adding that “a combination of ballet, yoga and practicing in the mirror” make her moves fluid as she poses on the red carpet.

In this romantic drama, Anne, 25, plays a girl who has been in-and-out of rehab when she returns for her sister’s wedding. Quite a change for the girl who made her name as a princess in the Disney franchise The Princess Diaries.

“I love the idea that the survival of her sobriety depends on her self-knowledge, her honesty and representing herself,” Anne says. “Sometimes it is really hard to be who we are especially if that’s something people have to deal with. I thought that could be really obnoxious, but it’s also brave. If you understand what’s at stake for her and why she must do it, it becomes a very brave decision. I find that amazing conflict is born.”

She adds, “I relate to her honesty, her appetite for life and the way she loves her family.”

Debra Winger turns bristly when talk turns to her comeback. “It’s not a long time,” she says. “It’s the right time.” (Spunky!)

Bill Irwin, who plays Anne’s father, saw her competitive side come out. “We did this one scene in the movie that involved loading and unloading the dishwasher,” he tells me. “As the father of the household, I’m supposed to be the best at it. Annie told me several times how I should load the dishwasher.”

Director Jonathan Demme was blown away by his experience working with Anne.

“When I saw her in a movie theatre in Bridgton, Maine, when she did Princess Diaries, I went ‘this is a great, young actress! Look at how she’s holding her own with Julie Andrews! Look at how she knows exactly how to pull us into her,’” he tells me. “I had hoped honestly and truly to work with her one day. Anne read it, she loved it and off we went. I’m really thrilled with the results.”

Rachel Getting Married opens in limited release on October 3.

Anne Hathaway’s Diva Ways

September 17th, 2008

While Anne Hathaway’s character Andy in The Devil Wears Prada lets herself get wrapped up in the glitz and glam of fashion, she ultimately rejects the diva way of life.

But lately, rumors of high-maintenance requests have swirled around the actress, making many wonder whether Anne is taking a cue from a different character from the popular movie about a demanding boss and those who serve her.

After delaying a day of interviews with just her breakfast order, Anne is beginning to resemble editrix Miranda Priestly instead of down-to-earth Andy.

“Anne requested lattes but only ones with soy milk, so she made a guy go out and bring
back five soy lattes for her and her crew,” a source tells OK! of the Rachel Getting Married event at the Hollywood life House in Toronto on Sept. 6.

“Then she requested scrambled eggs since she didn’t like the breakfast available. The same guy had to go to a restaurant next door and ask for the eggs. It took 45 minutes, and then she barely even touched them!”

Perhaps Anne, 25, was stressed out about ex Raffaello Follieri’s sept. 10 court appear-ance? The Italian businessman, 30 – who Anne called the “love of my life” – recently pleaded guilty to real estate fraud.
