Anne Hathaway’s Ex Owes $3.6 Million

December 16th, 2008

Although Anne Hathaway has left her ex Raffaello Follieri far behind, the Italian businessman is still dealing with his legal troubles after ripping off investors in a real-estate scam involving the Vatican.

Raffaello has agreed he owes more than $3.6 million to those he duped into believing he had ties to the Vatican, according to the Associated Press, and federal prosecutors say he will pay $2 million to Dundee Realty Corp. as restitution.  He’ll also dole out $813,000 to Yucaipa Corporate Initiatives Fund and $40,000 to an Atlantic City monsignor.

Anne’s ex is serving 4.5 years in jail after pleading guilty in the scam.

Anne Hathaway Bounces Back

December 5th, 2008

Anne Hathaway had barely finished filming her race-to-the-altar comedy, Bride Wars, last June when she faced a life-altering moment of her own: Her boyfriend of four years, Italian real-estate developer Raffaello Follieri, was arrested for fraud.

“It’s a situation where the rug was pulled out from under me all of a sudden,” she says. Rather than give up, Anne fought back by revving up her career even further, flaunting a sleeker physique — and brandishing a brand-new man.

Step one in healing her heartache? “Trying to move on and have a sense of humor,” says Anne, who did just that with an Oct. 4 Saturday Night Live hosting gig. “I just had a busy summer. I did some traveling. I’ve got a new movie out, Rachel Getting Married,” she deadpanned on the show. “Oh, and also, I broke up with my Italian boyfriend, and two weeks later, he was heading to prison for fraud. I mean, we’ve all been there — am I right, ladies?”

By then, Anne had already moved on. Later that month, she told London reporters, “This guy I know in L.A. is kind of doing it for me right now. When I think of sexy, I think of him.” And on Oct. 29, she debuted her new beau, Dukes of Hazzard: The Beginning actor Adam Shulman, during a trip to New Orleans for a Rachel screening. “We met through mutual friends,” Adam, 27, said.

In contrast to Raffaello who’s serving a four-and-a-half-year prison sentence for wire fraud, money laundering and conspiracy, Adam is a stand-up guy. “He comes from a great family,” Fred Gibbons, Adam’s neighbor in L.A., tells OK!. “He is one of the nicest guys I have ever met.”

Ultimately, Anne says, “Everything that has happened to me, good and bad, has happened for a reason. I’ve been made stronger from the good stuff and much, much stronger from the bad stuff.”

No Leniency For Anne Hathaway’s Ex

October 20th, 2008

Although Anne Hathaway’s ex-boyfriend, Raffaello Follieri, asked for a reduced sentence in his fraud case, U.S. prosecutors have advised the judge that the Italian businessman doesn’t deserve leniency.

Raffaello, who originally agreed to five years and three months in jail after pleading guilty in September to fraud for various business dealings involving the Catholic church, had asked for his sentence to be lessened to three years.

Court papers submitted in Manhattan today contend that the Rachel Getting Married star’s ex should serve more than four years in jail for cheating investors, according to the Associated Press. His sentence will be handed down on Thursday.

Anne has remained stoic throughout the controversy surrounding her ex and their high-profile breakup, which fell apart after four years together when Raffaello was arrested last June.

"What’s the right thing to do? Do you talk about it? It’s the elephant in the room," she said recently. "I think it’s better to let everyone know that I’m OK. I’m trying to move on and have a sense of humor about everything."

Anne’s Ex Wants Less Prison Time

October 15th, 2008

Anne Hathaway’s ex-boyfriend Italian businessman Raffaello Follieri, who pleaded guilty in September to orchestrating fraudulent schemes involving the Vatican, wants his deportation to Italy sped up and his prison sentence reduced to three years. He was originally sentenced to five years and three months under his plea deal, according to Reuters.

Raffaello’s lawyer filed the memo on Tuesday, saying he should be sent back to his own country.

"To say his hopes and dreams of building a thriving business in the United States has been a disaster is an understatement," Reuters quotes his lawyer Flora Edwards as saying. "There is no danger he will ever return to this country."

Anne has been speaking publicly about her ex of four years, including joking about the situation in her opening monologue as the host of SNL a few weeks ago and opening up in an interview on Good Morning America.

"What’s the right thing to do? Do you talk about it? It’s the elephant in the room," she said on GMA. "I think it’s better to let everyone know that I’m OK. I’m trying to move on and have a sense of humor about everything."

Anne Hathaway’s Slimming Secret

October 10th, 2008

What’s the secret of Anne Hathaway’s new single-girl glow?

The Rachel Getting Married star puts it all down to her new vegan diet.

During a recent appearance on The Late Show With David Letterman, Anne praised her meat- and dairy-free regime, saying, "I have more energy, and my skin looks better."

A source close to Anne tells OK! she’s also hooked on organic health line Karen & Sisters. "She loves the Tokyo soba noodles, dumplings and veggie turkey," the insider says.

But there’s a downside! At brunch a few days earlier at NYC’s Paris Commune restaurant, Anne, 25, could only eat spinach and melon while her friends chowed down on carbs.

The Devil Wears Prada star has been back on the market since she split with long-term boyfriend Raffaello Follieri just before he was arrested on fraud charges in June.

Anne Hathaway: “I’m Trying to Move On”

October 2nd, 2008

While Anne Hathaway’s newest movie role has her playing a character recovering from drug problems, the Rachel Getting Married star has her own troubles to recover from, after her ex-boyfriend Raffaello Follieri was arrested in June on fraud charges.

"It’s interesting to play a character who everybody knows the unsavory details of her life," she tells Good Morning America in an interview this morning. "And here I am, promoting this character, when obviously, things that I prefer to remain private are kind of out there."

The brunette beauty was honest when asked about what she’s learned from her ordeal, saying that wasn’t something she’s ready to discuss with the world.

"I do believe – I suppose if anything – the thing that I learned is there’s a journey," she reveals. "And there’s never going to be a point that you have figured everything out, no matter how dramatic the things that have happened to you are."

While most women her age don’t have a successful film career, it’s also unlikely they’ve found themselves in a similar situation to Anne, something that she says she’s also learned from.

"I’m really honoring the fact that I’m 25 years old and I was really surprised by a situation," she says. "I have a lot of people that love me, that have protected me, that were trying to protect me before and are doing even more now."

So how is she coping with the buzz surrounding her ex’s legal troubles, while still goign forward with her own life and career? Anne says she’s just going to press ahead despite the scandal.

"What’s the right thing to do? Do you talk about it? It’s the elephant in the room," she confesses. "I think it’s better to let everyone know that I’m OK. I’m trying to move on and have a sense of humor about everything."

Anne Hathaway’s Ex Pleads Guilty

September 10th, 2008

Shortly after Anne Hathaway broke things off with her long-time boyfriend, Italian businessman Raffaello Follieri, he was arrested for allegedly stealing from clients and misleading investors, among other charges.

Today the former playboy who posed in pictures with the likes of Bill Clinton and supermarket mogul Ron Burkle has pleaded guilty to criminal charges of conspiracy, wire fraud and money laundering in NYC, according to the Wall Street Journal.

"I did not have investor authorization to use the money that way," said Raffaello. "I knew what I was doing was wrong."

"The money" he’s referring to is the reportedly large sum he received from investors after telling them he represented the Vatican, money he then used in part to fund his lavish lifestyle.

The couple had been dating since 2004, and were often photographed living a jetset lifestyle, taking exotic vacations and dining at expensive restaurants.

If Anne hasn’t moved on yet, we sure she will now!

Anne Hathaway Talks About Ex’s Arrest

September 10th, 2008

Since her boyfriend of four years, Italian businessman Raffaello Follieri, was arrested in June, Anne Hathaway has stayed mum on the topic, choosing instead simply put on a smile at press events and move on with her life.

But in the October issue of W magazine, the Princess Diaries actress finally talks about her former flame, who just pleaded guilty Wednesday to criminal charges of wire fraud and conspiracy, among others.

"As soon as I found out about the arrest, I had to get on a plane to Mexico to do a press tour for ‘Get Smart,’ " she tells the magazine. "And then I spent a week in shock at a friend’s house. And then I had to go back and do more press, and I haven’t stopped since."

At the time of his arrest, the couple shared an apartment, and Anne says she’s still looking for a place to live while staying at her friends’ place.

"I have to find a place to live," she says. "It’s a situation where the rug was pulled out from under me all of a sudden, but just as suddenly my friends threw another rug back under me."

Anne Hathaway’s Ex Arrested

June 24th, 2008

Raffello Follieri, Anne Hathaway’s ex-boyfriend, has been arrested for fraud, U.S. authorities announced Tuesday.

The Italian businessman was charged with conspiracy, wire fraud and money laundering for spearheading a faux real estate project he claimed to be linked to the Catholic Church.

He is expected to appear at the U.S. District Court in Manhattan later today.

"It’s a little premature at this time. I am hopeful we will be able to resolve everything," his rep says in a statement.

Raffaello lied to investors that his firm, the Follieri Group LLC, was aiding the Vatican in divesting unwanted U.S. real estate properties, going as far as to claim he was appointed financial manager at the Vatican and had met with the Pope.

In reality, the only thing the 29-year-old and his cohorts were investing in were their extravagant lifestyle, doling out the millions for high-end clothes, expensive meals and other services, according to the filed criminal complaint.

Raffaello has had other brushes with the law — he was arrested in April for writing a bad check, but has since reimbursed it, and last year, billionaire Ron Burkle sued him for misusing $1.3 million in business funds.

Raffaello and Anne dated for four years. They split earlier this month.
