The Office Stars Are Working Overtime

One of the reasons that Michael Scott is such a horrible boss on The Office is that he just wants his employees to love him.
Apparently it’s not a problem he shares with the bosses on NBC.
Rainn Wilson, who stars as Scott’s excruciating sidekick, Dwight Schrute, told OK! that the network is making the cast and crew work at warp speed — because, he claims, they’re a little light on other hit shows!
"The Office is keeping me pretty busy," Rainn told us at the Tisch School of Performing Art’s annual fundraiser in New York. "We just shot 13 episodes in 17 weeks," he said.
"Most TV shows make 22 episodes in a year — so we made that in just over three months."
So what’s the rush to rack up episodes of the smash hit mockumentary?
"It’s NBC and their lack of programing," he explained. "They’re milking their golden goose, to mix a couple of metaphors."

The 60th Annual Primetime Emmy awards are live on Sunday, Sept. 21 on ABC and the stars are surely getting ready and gearing up for the big event. Don’t know who to cheer for? Will win: The Amazing Race
The Amazing Race always wins this award, it seems, because frankly put, it’s well done, exciting, and instead of being filmed in a studio, it takes place all over the globe. We wouldn’t be surprised to see it nab the Emmy for the sixth year in a row.
HOST (REALITY PROGRAM)
Nominees: Tom Bergeron (Dancing With the Stars), Heidi Klum (Project Runway), Howie Mandel (Deal or No Deal), Jeff Probst (Survivor), Ryan Seacrest (American Idol)
Should win: Tom Bergeron
Will win: Tom Bergeron
Due to Ryan Seacrest overkill, we think the Emmy will go to Tom Bergeron, who acts fast on his feet during the live broadcast of DWTS and manages to be cheesy and endearing at the same time.
SUPPORTING ACTOR (COMEDY)
Nominees: Jon Cryer (Two and a Half Men), Kevin Dillon (Entourage), Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother), Jeremy Piven (Entourage), Rainn Wilson (The Office).

Besides the fact that NPH does a stellar job on HIMYM, he’s been highly visible this year, acting in Old Spice commercials and "Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along-Blog."

While we’d love to see Amy pick this one up (as the first to be nominated in this category in 30 years, fans love Vanessa as evil Wilhelmina Slater, and it could be her turn for an Emmy.

Nominees: Ted Danson (Damages), Michael Emerson (Lost), Zeljko Ivanek (Damages), William Shatner (Boston Legal), John Slattery (Mad Men)

Will win: William Shatner
Ted’s a TV institution, and John is a show-stealer on Mad Men, but for some reason we can’t quite put our finger on, it feels like this one will go to William’s work as inappropriate lawyer Denny on Boston Legal.
SUPPORTING ACTRESS (DRAMA)
Nominees: Candice Bergen (Boston Legal), Rachel Griffiths (Brothers & Sisters), Sandra Oh (Grey’s Anatomy), Dianne Wiest (In Treatment), Chandra Wilson (Grey’s Anatomy)

Backlash after Katherine Heigl’s antics this year has taken the shine off Grey’s Anatomy, so Sandra and Chandra are out. Dianne Wiest already has an Oscar and is brilliant as Gabriel Byrne’s therapist on In Treatment, but our guess is Candice’s TV past will get her the Emmy this year to add to the five she has at home for Murphy Brown.
OUTSTANDING ACTOR (COMEDY)
Nominees: Alec Baldwin (30 Rock), Steve Carell (The Office), Lee Pace (Pushing Daisies), Tony Shalhoub (Monk), Charlie Sheen (Two and a Half Men).

While we feel Alec Baldwin was shafted last year due to bad press surrounding those voicemails he left for his daughter and has recovered nicely in the public eye, Tony Shalhoub has won six awards for his quirky role on Monk, the last in 2005, and who are we to mess with a record like that?
Lisa’s pick: Steve Carell
“I think he is so funny and talented and it is his turn to win. And he is always the best dressed!” she says of The Office actor.

Tina Fey is on a roll this year, having won the Golden Globe already in this category. Plus, she’s just brilliantly hilarious at all times and we can’t imagine her not winning this.

“She is a comic genius and it’s her year, I’m guessing. She is groovy cool and I always love her designer choices she makes on the red carpet!”

Having won the Golden Globe for his role as ad exec Don Draper on Mad Men, we wouldn’t be surprised if Jon carries away an Emmy as well this year. Even if you haven’t seen the show, believe us, he is just that good.

“Just awesome, and so new and fresh," she gushes. "I can’t wait to meet him, I’m a big fan. And he’s hot!”

Glenn deserves an Emmy for her hard-hitting role on Damages, but we think Kyra’s body of work on The Closer is such a wide critical success and favorite with fans that she’ll squeak out a win over Glenn and last year’s winner, Sally Field.

“What a competitive field, all are so amazing. I think Sally’s work was phenomenal this season, as it always is and it just may be her time!" she says. " She wore a gorgeous Valentino last year and I look forward to seeing what designer she chooses this year!”

Nominees: Curb Your Enthusiasm, Entourage, The Office, 30 Rock, Two and a Half Men.
Should win: 30 Rock or The Office

While both NBC shows are fan favorites, this is Tina Fey’s year and we think she’ll bring her show with her to the podium again for best comedy series over the popular Entourage, especially since Adrian and the boys were off TV for a year.
OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES
Nominees: Boston Legal, Damages, Dexter, House, Lost, Mad Men.
Should win: Mad Men
Will win: Mad Men
Although it’s currently only in its second season now, Mad Men has already scored 16 Golden Globe wins this year. So why not bag up the Emmy to go, too? Besides the winning streak, the highly-stylized retro show has garnered a lot of buzz, even among those who don’t watch it.

Rainn Wilson Hearts ‘The Rocker’

Rainn Wilson is jovial and full of jokes when we meet at the 20th Century Fox building in NYC to promote his musical comedy The Rocker, which is in theaters now. The Office star, 42, is married to wife Holiday, and together they care for son Walter, 3.
In this interview, Rainn talks about family, fame and growing up with a “unique” name.
Ever regret that you didn’t become famous until later in life?
I’m happy the way it worked out. I couldn’t be more thrilled. I struggled for a long time, the first ten years of my career, and now things are taking off. I have no regrets that I wish this or that had happened. I’m a much better actor now than I was then. I needed to learn. Some people are like Leonardo DiCaprio and immediately brilliant at 19. I wasn’t that way. I was learning and being in the trenches.
What was your experience like growing up with a unique name?
I was tormented terribly for being named Rainn and mocked and that’s what made me the sad clown you see before? you. I do like my name very much. It came from my hippie, bohemian parents who lived on? a houseboat in the late sixties.
Did growing up on a houseboat sour you or make you love the ocean more?
I love the ocean. I’m a Seattleite. I like the mountains and? the ocean both. I still go back to Seattle. My wife and I have a cabin? up in Oregon.
How do you like to relax in your spare time?
I like to do this. [Turns around in chair and stares at me.] You’re wordsmiths. I leave it to you. I like to play tennis. That’s my new passion. I feel like an old? Southern Californian but I love to play tennis. That really? relaxes me. I also like to kill people on X-Box Call of Duty 4 and go online and shoot people in the face. I also find that very? relaxing. I also like to sleep.
Don’t you have a young son?
Yes.
That’s not relaxing?
That’s not relaxing with the little one. That’s a workout. I love it, but relaxing, no.
Did you have rock star dreams?
I got to thankfully live through a little bit of a rocker nightmare, ?which was my probably shortest-lived high school band ever. I did two gigs with? my band Collective Moss; I wish I still had that flyer. We played two? gigs, one for a bunch of 11-year-olds who ended up stealing our patch? chords in a church basement. Then our second gig was an audition for? the Battle of The Bands, which we didn’t get into. That’s how bad we? were; we were not even in the top six bands at New Trier High School [in Illinois]. I was the singer.
What’s your best concert memory?
I never caught a drumstick and I’ve never been sweated on but I got to see Nirvana in their last U.S. concert and? that was a thrill for me as a Pacific Northwest Nirvana freak.
Did you go backstage and meet Kurt Cobain?
No, I? wasn’t a huge international superstar like I am now to throw my weight? around with my posse. My favorite concert memories are about the? music. I saw Radiohead last year and that was pretty awesome. Doing? this VH-1 Rock Honors The Who concert was just tremendous. I got to? meet The Who and they were idols of mine growing up. I just thought? Pete Townsend was the best and I got to interview Flaming Lips and? Dave Grohl and Pearl Jam. That was really awesome to be part of the? experience.
Did Christina Applegate mind being cast as a sexy mom?
This was her first sexy mom role, and I’m sure there will be many more. I think she knew, she was like ‘You know what, I’m late 30s now, it’s time for me to tip-toe into the sexy mom world.’ She’s amazing. She’s so deft with comedy, just a light touch, and she’s hot and smart and really cool. We had a blast. I’m really psyched, and now we’re both Emmy nominees.
Why should we see this film?
The Rocker is awesome. It’s The Awesomer. It’s The Rawesome. The Rocker is Rawesome. See I should do Fox’s work for them. It’s the first great heavy metal movie. It’s got it all. It’s got me macking on Christina Applegate, every man’s fantasy, it’s got great music, comedic hijinks, and it’s also got a lot of heart.

Emmy Watch: Comedy Nominees

"Dying is easy; comedy is hard." And it’s going to be even harder for shows to get Emmy nominations Thursday morning. With a well-rounded crop of series and acting talents to choose from, Emmy voters are going to have their work cut out for them. So who will have the last laugh tomorrow? OK! predicts the finalists for the comedy categories!

The only locks for nominations are NBC hits The Office and defending champion 30 Rock. It’s hard to bet against Curb Your Enthusiasm as well. The Emmy favorite should be back looking for its first win (it’s lost four times) and has a better chance at the "HBO spot" than Entourage, whose season concluded too long ago that it may not be fresh in voters’ minds. Two and a Half Men will take the sole "traditional sitcom" slot, leaving one more open for perhaps critically acclaimed freshmen series Pushing Daisies.

Ricky Gervais spoiled the two-man race between Alec Baldwin and Steve Carell last year, but he won’t have the chance to do so this year. Others who could though are three-time winner Tony Shalhoub, Charlie Sheen and Larry David, the latter two of whom are looking for their first win in the category. Keep an eye out for Golden Globe-winning Californication star David Duchovny, who could crash the party.

The Academy never recognized Christina Applegate for Married…With Children (she did win a guest starring Emmy for Friends), but they will for Samantha Who?. America Ferrera should be back to defend her crown while Tina Fey will look to follow in America’s footsteps of sweeping the big three awards in a single season (Golden Globe, SAG and Emmy). 2006 winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus and perennial bridesmaid Mary-Louise Parker are the safe picks for the last two spots, which means the Desperate Housewives could be shut out yet again (first time was in 2006). Should one make it in, it will probably be Marcia Cross.

This may be the easiest race to gauge out of the main five. Two-time defending champion Jeremy Piven will definitely be looking for a three-peat, but his co-star Kevin Dillon, a nominee last year, may be left out of the, um, Entourage. Rainn Wilson, Jon Cryer and Neil Patrick Harris are looking solid to return. Plus, Neil is announcing the nominees tomorrow, and that’s a good sign (but not always — Eric McCormack missed out on a nod when announcing in 2002). After sending in a poor tape last year, John Krasinski learned his lesson this time around and should find himself shortlisted. Spoilers include 30 Rock players Jack McBrayer and Tracy Morgan.

A wide-open race, we are guaranteed a new winner as last year’s champ Jaime Pressly failed to even make the Top 10 list! Also missing from the semifinals is past nominee Cheryl Hines, which could be a sign that the Academy’s love for Curb Your Enthusiasm is waning. Vanessa Williams is an easy pick to return, and Holland Taylor and Jenna Fischer ought to find themselves back in the mix too. We may see new faces in Jean Smart and the ever-bubbly Kristin Chenoweth, who is also announcing the nominees tomorrow.
