No Ralph Macchio in New Karate Kid

February 5th, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

Ralph Macchio will not be making an appearance in The Karate Kid remake. The Ugly Betty star, who made the 80’s franchise popular, has said he would consider making a cameo in the new installment. But according to director Harald Zwart, it’s not going to be that kind of movie.

"It’s not the kind of movie where he could do a cameo, but I think he’s a great actor," Zwart told OK! on the red carpet of the Pink Panther 2 premiere in NYC on Feb. 3.

Macchio too, seemed to have changed his mind as well, recently telling OK!, "I would take a look, but I also hold our original version pretty high for myself.  If it doesn’t meet that standard, I think I’d let them make their movie."

Indeed, Zwart says there are going to be some significant changes in the new Karate Kid. "I think with Jaden Smith, Jackie Chan and us going to Beijing and shooting it, it’s already different enough," he tells OK!. "I think it’s a great story that could easily be retold."

The Karate Kid remake will hit theater in 2010.

The Karate Kid Gives His Blessing To Remake

January 23rd, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

The original Karate Kid, Ralph Macchio, has mixed emotions about the new version of the 1984 film that made him a teen pinup.

“You know you’re not the young guy anymore,” the actor, 47, told OK! earlier this week at the Ray-Ban Visionary Awards at the Sundance Film Festival.

“But it’s a privilege that they’re remaking something you did,” he says of the movie, starring Will Smith and and Jada Pinkett Smith’s son Jaden Smith, 10 — star of the Pursuit of Happyness — and martial arts legend Jackie Chan, 54, as Mr. Miyagi.

Jaden Smith will be “fantastic,” says Ralph, who went on to make two sequels and dozens more movies.

But a word of advice: “Be good at it because the role is special to me. Embrace it!”

How The Stars Are Spending Christmas

December 24th, 2008

Just like families around the globe, the stars have holiday traditions and make every effort to be with their loved ones during this special time of year.

“We have Santa Claus, and Santa Claus, and gifts and more Santa Claus and open fires and a lot of food,” Kate Winslet says. “Nobody gets out of their pajamas for about a week.”

Nicole Kidman is celebrating Sunday Rose’s first Christmas. “We’re having our family come over,” Nicole, who is married to Keith Urban, says. “Lying low. Taking it easy. Lots of food and carols. He plays carols.”

Miley Cyrus hopes to be with boyfriend Justin Gaston. “I love to spend the holidays with all my friends, so that would be nice for us to all have a party,” she says. How will Justin make it special? “Say some prayers and hope she has a good time,” he tells me.

Lavishing six-year-old daughter Sy’rai with gifts is not on Brandy’s agenda. “She’s not going to be spoiled this Christmas because she already has gifts from last Christmas that she has not yet opened. We’re in a recession right now. She’s going to have to chill.”

Maria Menounos will dress up her dogs. “I always dress them up for the holidays,” she says. “They all have their Christmas costumes. I’ve omitted the antlers from my German Shepherd because he took pictures last year and he looked depressed, and my entire family hated me for it. They’re like ‘why did you emasculate him?’”

Ralph Macchio – celebrating on the East Coast — gets two days of Christmas. “We open gifts on Christmas morning, so it’s really old-school. Christmas Eve is at my in-laws, it’s the big Italian fish dinner, and Christmas Day is at my parents with 7,000 grandchildren running around.”

Yonkers Joe star Chazz Palminteri tells me, “Christmas is a holiday I like to have at home. I always have it in my house. I enjoy that. I like having all the family over, and have pasta. My mother-in-law cooks the turkey. I think it’s great. The kids all open up the presents. It’s a great time of the year.”

Lena Olin is trying something new. “We’re going to go to Switzerland – the whole family. We’ll go skiing and have hot chocolate. This is our first year we’re doing that. We always go to Vermont, but this year we want to start a European tradition too.”

Gabrielle Union and Diddy enjoy NYC this time of year. “I love going out to Rockefeller Center and watching people fall on the ice skating rink,” Gabrielle says. Diddy adds, “I keep it shopping at FAO Schwarz.”

Julianne Hough plans to meet up with her famous friends in Tennessee. “There’s a bunch of parties in Nashville, and songwriters will throw parties at their houses and stuff. That’s where I hung out with Taylor Swift and Kellie Pickler for the first time last year — at a Christmas party. We’ll probably all bump into each other at some point.”

WHERE IN THE WORLD ARE THE CELEBS THIS CHRISTMAS? Cynthia Nixon is off to California “to get out of the cold weather.” She’ll celebrate with “the usual” traditions. … Wizards of Waverly Place star Jake T. Austin will be in New York play football with his uncle at home. … Ashanti will “probably” see boyfriend Nelly for the holidays. “I’ll be on the beach somewhere,” she tells me. The guys of Lady Antebellum are returning to Georgia while their lead singer Hillary Scott is staying in Tennessee. … Ne-Yo is whooping it up with his sister, mom and grandma in Atlanta. “Last year I ended up having to do a show, and mom’s never going to let me forget that. Mom’s like ‘oh no, no, no,’” he says. “This year was extra important that I got home. It’s going to be our first time spending it in Atlanta, which is our new home.”

Ugly Betty Scoop: Ralph Macchio!

September 23rd, 2008

As I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who watched The Karate Kid and thought I could learn the discipline by waxing the neighbors’ cars, I’m psyched to learn that the ’80s icon Ralph Macchio is coming to Ugly Betty!

Ralph will appear as city official Archie Rodriguez on Oct. 30.

Ugly Betty
star Ana Ortiz spilled to my fellow blogger, OK!’s Valerie Nome  at the Stand Up for a Cure event that the boy we once loved is now all man.

“You look at him and it’s hard to recognize … you don’t see the boy anymore,” Ana admits.  “And he’s just a completely wonderful actor.”

Oh, Ana, you do gush!

“I loved him," she says, "but I did have a crush on Pony Boy in The Outsiders.”

Maybe C. Thomas Howell can stop by next!

Ugly Betty, season premiere three, airs Thursday, Sept. 25 at 8 p.m. on ABC.

Dina Lohan: Mom of the Year?

May 5th, 2008

Lindsay Lohan isn’t the only one in the family picking up awards.

Dina Lohan, the actress’ mother, will be honored by Mingling Moms as one of Long Island’s Top 20 Moms, the organization announced Monday.

For what, you ask?

Well, there’s nothing deep behind it — it’s just for rearing Lindsay herself.

“We’re just honoring celebrities’ moms on Long Island,” a spokesperson from Mingling Moms tells OK!. “It’s something for Mother’s Day. It’s a list of mothers from Long Island who have raised superstar children.”

Dina, who’s trying to launch another luminous career for her 14-year-old daughter Ali, will be present to pick up her award at the ceremony on Tuesday at Carlyle on the Green in Bethpage, Long Island. It is unknown if Lindsay or any of her children will be in attendance.

“You never know those things,” the spokesperson tells OK!. “Plans change, but Dina will be there.”

In addition to 45-year-old Dina, who will star in her own reality series on E! this summer, other Long Island mamas singled out for producing A-list offspring include Carol Baldwin (mom to the Baldwin brothers), Roslind Nyman Joel (mother of Billy Joel), Shelley Stevens Hershlag (Natalie Portman’s mom), Rosalie Macchio (Ralph Macchio’s mother) and Patricia Vian, mother of newlywed Mariah Carey.

New mom Jennifer Lopez, who lives on the Island with hubby Marc Anthony and gave birth to twins Max and Emme in North Shore Hospital, will also receive the Celebrity Mom of the Year Honor for putting the media spotlight on the 118-mile long strip.

But these famous-by-association moms shouldn’t feel too special.

“It’s not just about the celebrities – it’s more about Long Island moms,” the rep says. “Over 1,000 Long Island moms will be at the Gala tomorrow evening as well.”
