Life really is a highway for Rascal Flatts members Gary LeVox, Jay DeMarcus and Joe Don Rooney, who are touring the U.S. until Oct. 30. How are the country stars surviving? “Our cell phones are always with us, so we can always be reached, and we can call home at any time,” Gary, 39, tells OK!. Meanwhile, the road has its share of surprises, says Gary. “A new mother once asked us to autograph her newborn’s head with a Sharpie.”

Jessica Simpson Booed During Show

March 16th, 2009

Country stars Rascal Flatts are getting rave reviews for their tour, and plenty of praise for almost everything about their shows. But a recent review of a show in Irvine, Calif. says Jessica Simpson should not be included in those compliments.

The Orange County Register says J Simp was "forgettable at best," and that her "fame is far more reaching than her talent deserves."

Ouch!

While the review notes she looked good in her cutoffs, her 4o-minute set "lacked energy." The big faux pas came when Jess forgot the lyrics… twice!

Her first slip-up came on "Remember That," and then when she messed up again, the crowd booed her.

Double ouch!

VIDEO: American Idols Go To Disney World

February 17th, 2009

All seven American Idols descend on Disney’s Hollywood Studios for The American Idol Experience opening held Thursday in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

It’s the first time the winning superstars have ever been together!

It’s certainly a cause for celebration: Carrie Underwood and David Cook duet on Fleetwood Mac’s Go Your Own Way during the show, which features a handful of real-life competitors vying for the prized ticket. “Carrie looks amazing and I’m just stoked to be here,” David says. Watch OK!’s exclusive video!

What advice would Carrie give wannabe contestants?

“Do whatever you love,” the All-American Girl singer says. “Sometimes the judges may tell you you shouldn’t do it for living, but if that’s what you love, you shouldn’t give it up. So no matter what happens, if you get the magic ticket, the fast-track ticket, use it — even if you don’t, still sing.

One thing Carrie won’t be trying? Her hockey-playing boyfriend Mike Fisher’s sport. (He swings for the Ottawa Senators.) “I can’t play hockey at all,” she laughs. “I can’t even fake.”

Kelly Clarkson — who tells me her slim physique can be attributed to wearing black and not white — gives the attraction her stamp of approval.

“This is pretty cool,” the My Life Would Suck Without You singer says, turning her attention away from Michael Johns. “It’s the first time we’ve actually all been together, so it’s like a family reunion.”

Jordin Sparks can’t believe her eyes. “It’s really creepy how close to the show the attraction actually is,” she says. “It’s got the lights and the fog and the music and the judges. It’s really, really weird, but it was a lot of fun.”

What’s something the No Air singer has lost? Her love for Chris Brown, who likely ended his career by messing up OK! darling Rihanna. “It’s pretty much gone now,” she tells me.

Meanwhile, Paula Abdul has one regret tonight. “I just wish they would all sing,” she says. “It would’ve been fun to hear it.” She adds, “There’s a lot of déjà vu going on. I got a kick out of watching the success of the Idols.”

What tunes would Phil Stacey suggest picking for this attraction?

“You should definitely choose a Celine Dion song or a Whitney Houston song,” he says. “No, I’m kidding. You should do Disney songs. You should get up there and do Can You Feel The Love Tonight or A Whole New World. You’re at Disney World! You’re only going to get the opportunity to do that once.”

Although Kellie Pickler, Chris Daughtry, Clay Aiken, Jennifer Hudson and Simon Cowell send regrets, the sizeable Idol turnout also includes a giggly David Archuleta, purple-haired Diana DeGarmo, newlywed Ruben Studdard, tan-and-fit Taylor Hicks, talkative Bo Bice, friendly Ryan Seacrest, jovial Justin Guarini, shy Fantasia Barrino, Idol alum-turned-Rascal Flatts songwriter Chris Schleich, tattooed Carly Smithson, Aussie Michael Johns, chatty Ace Young, dreadlocked Jason Castro, Southern gentleman Josh Gracin, zany Sanjaya, slimmed-down Mandisa and mom LaKisha Jones.

Woo-hoo! David Cook, David Archuleta, Fantasia, Sanjaya and Jason take a spin on the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster during the afterparty held on Sunset Boulevard. No lines, no waiting!

As Kat DeLuna’s Whine Up plays, Idols enjoy blue martinis, chicken, steak, garlic mashed potatoes, sushi and the signature American Idol dessert.

Disney certainly treats its Idols well: Ace (and girlfriend Allison Fischer) “hit every ride in about seven hours, and then hit the rides we liked again.” Phil took his five-year-old daughter Chloe on Space Mountain. “It’s intense, and she actually tried it,” he says. “It was frightening for me, but she wasn’t crying at all. She loved it.” LaKisha’s five-year-old daughter Brionne would ride Space Mountain the following day. “She can’t wait to get on it. She’s a little daredevil.”

Still, some might call singing in front of hundreds of people in The American Idol Experience daring.

“I think anybody who gets a chance should absolutely do it,” David Cook says.

Bonus: I worked at Disney Hollywood Studios as part of the Walt Disney College Program, so this is quite a homecoming! I could be found sweeping Sunset Boulevard, the street on which this party is held. It is incredible – and the uniforms are still the same.

Country Music Community Embracing Jessica Simpson

February 3rd, 2009

For a lot of celebrities, it would be just another public appearance, but when Jessica Simpson takes the podium at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum on Feb. 11 to announce the nominees for the 2009 Academy of Country Music Awards, it will mark a decisive moment in the former reality star’s bid to be accepted by the country music community.

Jessica had risen to fame as a bubble-gum pop star and, along with then-husband Nick Lachey, as the star of MTV reality hit, Newlyweds. But by the summer of 2007, her marriage to Nick was over and her recording career seemed to be heading in the same direction after her 2006 album, Pieces of Me, made only the slightest dent in the pop charts.

So when it was announced in the fall of 2007 that Texas-born Jess would be embarking on a journey back to her country roots, it seemed like either a bad practical joke or a desperate publicity stunt.

At the time, a country music insider told OK!, "She is definitely going to have to work hard to prove herself in Nashville because people are judged on talent and merit, not where they eat in L.A. or shop or go to clubs."

And while the 28-year-old’s first foray into country, Do You Know, which was released in Sept. 2008, hasn’t broken any sales records, Jessica appears to have earned some respect from her country cohorts as she’s traded in headlining her own tour for becoming the opening act for Rascal Flatts, one of the genre’s biggest and well-respected bands.

In fact, the boys from Rascal Flatts came out in defense of Jess after she took the stage at the KISS Country Chili Cookoff in Pembroke Pines, Florida, where she debuted a fuller figure and some controversial high-waisted jeans. "I was Googling ‘pretty’ the other day," band member Jay DeMarcus told a crowd in Charlottesville, VA, about Jess, "and her face came up."

Now comes yesterday’s announcement that Jessica will be joining such tried-and-true country stars as LeAnn Rimes and Carrie Underwood, along with fellow up-and-comers Kellie Pickler and Julianne Hough, to announce the ACMA nominees.

"It may look little, but this is actually a big thumbs-up from Nashville to Jessica," our insider tells OK!. "This little bit of acknowledgement says to her, ‘We’re taking you seriously; keep up the good work.’"

Jessica Simpson Talks About Staying Positive

January 30th, 2009

It’s been a rough week for Jessica Simpson, who became the subject of much weight-gain talk after recent photos showed the pop/country star had added a few extra pounds.

Several times during her 40-minute set on Thursday night in Charlottesville, Va., however, an upbeat and smiling Jess emphasized the importance of prayer and staying positive during difficult times.

"In our world today, we focus on so many other things that are completely pointless," she said to the audience. "I wanted to tell the world we need to put our hands together and pray out loud."

After performing her song, "Still Beautiful," the 28-year-old told the crowd at the University of Virginia’s John Paul Jones Arena to remember the song’s last line: "Even when I’m sad, every day I have is still beautiful."

"Please remember that, no matter what you go through in life," she implored.

And even though it was the topic on everyone’s tongues, Jessica, who was opening up for main attraction Rascal Flatts, did not mention her recent weight gain. In fact, in skin-tight black leather pants, a black blazer and silver sparkling high heels, she seemed to have slimmed down.

She did address one juicy topic during the show: her relationship with Tony Romo. She dedicated her song "You’re My Sunday" to "someone special" in her life. "He inspires me to be everything I can be," she said.

The love-fest didn’t stop there. When Rascal Flatts took the stage, bassist Jay DeMarcus had kind words for Jessica.

"I was Googling ‘pretty’ the other day," he said to the crowd, "and her face came up."

During set breaks, a large projection screen showed real-time text messages sent in by the audience. One said: "Jessica Simpson U R so beautiful but shhhh my girl is right next to me."

Jessica Simpson: I’m Shy!

December 8th, 2008

Everyone knows that Jessica Simpson has had a pop career, a reality TV show, a very public divorce, a string of not-that-great movies, a famous NFL quarterback boyfriend and is now attempting the crossover to country music. But for all that the public knows, the bubbly blonde claims she’s not that outgoing.

"I am a very shy person, but I do believe that God has blessed me with a gift that I need to share," she tells the Chicago Tribune. "I always wanted to be entertaining in some way. Whether it’s cooking dinner for a best friend or [onstage], I try to do it up right."

As for trying her best, J. Simp is out to prove that she really does have what it takes to be a country singer, going on tour with Rascal Flatts in January with her album, Do You Know.

"I can’t wait to be a part of their show and let everyone know that I do actually sing and I’m not just in tabloids," she says

Reese, Nicole, Shania Wow During CMAs

November 20th, 2008

I’m stationed near Maureen McCormick when I jet down to Nashville for the CMA Awards held at the Sommet Center. Woo-hoo!

Reese Witherspoon is radiant in red lipstick – shockingly gorgeous – but doesn’t answer when a reporter asks if she likes country music. Does she stay in a hotel when she’s in Nashville? Nah, she’s staying with her family. Nicole Kidman swans in with hubby Keith Urban, but steps back because she’s letting her hubby “enjoy his night.” Here’s Shania Twain, looking glam – and blonder – than I remember. Nice!

Energetic Miley Cyrus stops to chat, and her kind dad Billy Ray takes a photo of her limelight-loving boyfriend Justin Gaston with fawning female fans. Hahaha. And Taylor Swift is wearing 30-pound dress! “I cannot even believe I was able to walk to the red carpet,” she says. “Try to lift it up. It’s so heavy. It’s like wearing a bag of rocks, but I really like it, so I’m proud to wear this bag of rocks.”

Kellie Pickler has BFF Taylor’s back when it comes to boy troubles. “She’s like my little sister, so I’m very protective of her,” Kellie tells me. “She definitely comes first.” Now that Taylor is getting over the heartbreak of her relationship with Joe Jonas, Kellie is there as she finds a new man. “She just needs someone who is very respectful and understanding of her career,” Kel says. “You know, it’s very time-consuming what we do, so you need someone that’s confident and secure and just a good person. Just respectful.”

Dancing With The Stars performer Julianne Hough is out and about since her surgery for endometriosis. “Oh, I’m fine,” she tells me. “I’m honestly better than new. I feel great, and like I said, better than I felt before I even went in for surgery.” Her boyfriend, Chuck Wicks, was there through it all. “It was easy,” he tells me. “We rented a bunch of movies and we sat on the couch and ate popcorn. And we got a little puppy. Puppies can cure everything. Between the movies, popcorn and the puppy – and her mom was there as well –she recovered pretty quick. It was two weeks, and she was back on the dancefloor doing her thing.” (Bummer! She’s now off the show.)

What’s Reba McEntire’s pre-show ritual? “I just make sure my dress is correctly in place, I’ve got lipgloss on and I get onstage,” she says. “I am not that good at practical jokes, and they always think of better  — or worse ones – than I can.”

Dancing With The Stars/Hannah Montana star Cody Linley is here to support Julianne and see Miley, but he’s also getting back to his roots. “I actually lived in Columbia from the ages of two to four. I don’t remember much of it, but to see autumn and see what Nashville is all about and remember again is cool.” Sadly, he’s off the show, too, which is unfortunate considering he had the will to win. “I was just going to say that my birthday’s November 20, and November 25 is the finale of Dancing With The Stars, so it would be the best 19th birthday present a boy could get to have a mirrorball trophy. Man! Winning right there. That’s my hope.” Aww!

American Idol finalist Diana DeGarmo is thinking of Paula Abdul in the wake of the tragic fan incident that occurred outside her home. “Paula’s a wonderful person and she deserves great things,” Diana tells me. “She’s got a great personality and that’s a horrible thing to have to deal with. She’s in my prayers — definitely.”

Miranda Lambert confesses she’s a big eBay shopper whose maximum bid is $100. “I’m cheap.” Does she get upset when she’s outbid? “Yes, I do. I take it personal.” Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles can’t wait to dress warmer. “I’m too excited about winter coming up,” Jennifer says. “I’m into the layered look.”

The Little Big Town girls are in awe of tourmate Carrie Underwood. “She has the best legs in the business,” Kimberly Roads says. Karen Fairchild adds, “She’s a super-disciplined person, so she eats well and she exercises every day. We’re like ‘oh Lord, we’ve gotta up our game. In the gym!’”

Here’s Hootie and The Blowfish singer Darius Rucker. What’s the best marriage advice he’s received? “My wife is always right,” he laughs.

Lady Antebellum
take time to reveal their heights – Charles Kelley, 6’6,” Hillary Scott, 5’9,” and Dave Haywood, 6’1” – on the red carpet before they’re shocked by their big win for Best New Artist. They brought their moms as their dates.

“When I was younger, I didn’t attend the CMAs when [mom Linda Davis] won the CMA with Reba, but I was her date for a couple of different CMA Awards,” Hillary says. “For her to be here tonight as my date, and for her to have this crystal trophy on her shelf at home in the house I grew up in, and for me to be taking one home tonight is just crazy. She’s so proud. There’s nothing better than sitting there when the nominees were being read off and holding my mama’s hand. Knowing that she knew exactly what it felt like. We were so lucky to have our moms here. We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them.”

Charles adds, “They were crying their eyes out.”

PRESS ROOM:  “I’ve never seen so much of Brad Paisley,” cohost Carrie Underwood gushes about his quick change backstage. The 45-second strip is also a highlight for Brad. “I was still getting dressed walking out,” he says. … Kenny Chesney, who has the hots for Shania, challenges Sugarland to take his Entertainer of the Year Award next year. … Rascal Flatts singer Joe Don Rooney calls fatherhood “amazing.” He says, “To be a father is just a big piece of that puzzle now that’s going to carry us on through the years.”

PARTY TIME: I catch Gretchen Wilson on her way inside the venue, Taylor Swift in the elevator at the Big Machine/Valory Records party and oh yes, there’s Jewel. The salmon and especially the mashed potatoes are amazing – so good! — at the official CMA Awards afterparty. Delish.
