How Danielle Fishel Dropped 30 Lbs.

May 26th, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

Danielle Fishel is walking lighter these days now that she’s dropped 30 lbs.

The Boy Meets World star turned Dish host credits NutriSystem for her weightloss.

“I thoroughly enjoyed doing it last year, and since then I have maintained by learning portion control,” the actress, 28, tells me. “That was one of the greatest things NutriSystem taught me. I cook a lot now. I eat 95% of my meals at home. I never eat fast food, I take protein bars with me everywhere, and I make all of my own food. I eat very low-carb and high fiber and a lot of protein.”

She continues, “I make a lot of fish, I love vegetables – so that’s a good thing – and then, the working out and the eating well, that allows me – I have a sweet tooth – so that allows me to have a cookie here and there. My mom just baked my favorite – my kryptonite is chocolate chip cookies that my mom bakes that are amazing.”

Danielle tells me she spends nine hours a week in the gym, doing cardio for an hour three days a week, and cardio for one hour and weights for another hour three days per week. She builds her workout into her morning, and gets her motivation from her trainer.

“It’s my favorite part of my day. It wasn’t always my favorite part of my day, but I grew into the lifestyle of working out, and now if I miss a day or I have to skip because of work, I don’t feel like my day is complete.”

One of her dieting dos is enjoying a cheat meal – but not a cheat day because she can get carried away.

“It’s so important to maintaining your overall mental health,” she says. “It’s easy to know that you only have a week before you can have something that you really want than to know ‘I’m never going to be allowed to eat this again.’”

Her favorite healthy snacks?

“I love my protein bars that I eat. They’re called Pure Protein, and they’re chocolate peanut butter ones. I put them in the refrigerator so they’re really cold, and, to me, they’re like my equivalent of having a Snickers, but it’s super healthy and low sugar.”

Also: La Tortilla Factory’s low carb, high-fiber tortillas. “I make wraps with those. That’s one of my favorite lunches is to make a salad and have a little turkey wrap.”

For Danielle, motivation to lose weight happened gradually.

“It takes awhile once you put weight on to have the ability to say ‘all right, I’m cutting everything out and starting over from scratch.’ But I just wasn’t happy. I was feeling uncomfortable in my clothes and in my skin. When I’m not feeling good about myself, I don’t feel like being social. I was wanting to stay home all the time, and there were a lot of friends and family events going on that I didn’t feel like going to because I didn’t have anything to wear and I didn’t feel good about myself. That was the biggest motivating factor for me. And when I don’t feel good about the way I look, I tend to be really grumpy without even realizing that that’s why.”

How did she feel after she dropped the poundage?

“I felt a-mazing after I lost weight,” Danielle says. “You wake up and you feel so much healthier. That’s the biggest thing for me. Not even so much the physical appearance of it, it’s more the way you feel. That was the biggest upside for me.”

Keeping it off is no sweat.

“Once you have the weight off and you feel great about yourself, it’s easy to look at something that you’re going to eat or look at the gym, and say ‘I’m really happy right now with the way I look, so it’s not worth it to me to have this cookie or have this cake or skip out on my gym appointment.’”

What slimming secrets can Danielle share?

“No matter what size the tag says, get the size that actually fits you,” she says. “Nobody else sees the tag after you’ve put it on. But dressing in clothes that fit you and that are more fitted – if you feel like you’re carrying extra weight, the only thing that makes you look even heavier is wearing bigger, baggier clothes.”

She adds, “Having a good tailor will make you look thinner, and dressing appropriately for your age and in a clothing size that actually fits you.”

Katie Lee Joel Adds Intrigue

April 22nd, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

Even with Bono, Bill Clinton, Jon Bon Jovi, Mariska Hargitay, Jimmy Fallon and Rachael Ray attending the Food Bank for New York City’s Can-Do Awards Dinner held Tuesday at Abigail Kirsch’s Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers, Katie Lee Joel is the biggest get of the night amid rumors of her affair with designer Yigal Azrouel.

The usually chatty chef married to Billy Joel is rushed through the press area for the first time in her life.

“Sorry, we have to pull her,” the rep says as Katie dodges reporters.

It’s a much different scenario than my experience last month when Katie was promoting ScottsMiracle-Gro GroGood campaign. She shared a pointed life lesson with me.

“Just do unto others as they’ll do unto you,” Katie told me March 18. “Treat people the way that you want to be treated.”

Time changes everything, and at tonight’s Food Bank Can-Do Awards Mariska Hargitay is rejoicing after suffering a collapsed lung earlier this year. How is she feeling?

“Much better,” Mariska says.

Jon Bon Jovi is bashful about being honored tonight.

“It’s humbling,” the brown eyeliner-wearing rocker says. “It was difficult for me to accept it, simply because when you’re doing something out of the goodness of your heart for as many years as this whole foundation has been building houses, we really don’t look for the accolades.”

What does he have to say about the dead dolphin found outside his home?

“He was trying to cross the hill to get to the house,” he jokes. “He thought he was a Miami Dolphin, you know?”

Being in the presence of this New Jersey icon makes Rachael Ray weak in the knees.

“I sang every song into a hairbrush, and isn’t that the appropriate way to celebrate Bon Jovi?” the food host yuks.

How does the Dunkin Donuts pitchwoman – who didn’t get her free iced coffee that day — encourage others to eat healthy?

“It’s very easy to eat very well, and it’s getting more affordable, thank God,” Rachael says in her raspy voice. “If you like to eat healthy, buy locally grown, go to Farmer’s Markets – it’s the last bargain left in food — and if you want to feel better about eating pasta, my favorite food group, switch over to whole grain. It’s full of fiber and protein.”

Jimmy Fallon confesses his love for Fig Newtons and vanilla ice cream. “Yeah!” his jovial wife Nancy Juvonen says. “By the way, the other thing that’s fantastic is grape nuts and vanilla ice cream. I’m not kidding. You’ll flip out.”

We spot Alan Wyse, Kim Cattrall’s boyfriend, who dishes on his SATC love, and Gwyneth Paltrow’s BFF Mario Batali, who is wearing orange crocs.

Here is Helena Christensen, who broke her front tooth Monday. Ouch! Who is the cutest baby in Hollywood? “The cutest baby is not in Hollywood,” she says in her Dutch accent. “The cutest baby’s in my girlfriend’s belly over there.” Aww!

While Emeril Lagasse doesn’t watch American Idol, he does have a reality show in mind.

“My reality show is basically you get a bunch of celebrities, and you all get on a scale and you weigh them. Whoever weighs the most at the end of the show, at the end of the series, they win. Wouldn’t that be a cool series? Just eat galore.”

Psst. The very-married chef is crushing on Britain’s Got Talent dynamo Susan Boyle. Ooh!

“She seems like a pretty cool lady,” he tells me.

‘Real Housewives’ Give Rich Husband Tips

February 24th, 2009

Finding a man is easy, but finding a rich man takes serious calculating.

Luckily, the Real Housewives of New York City are happy to offer real tips on how to land a man with a fat bank account.

“If you want to find a rich husband, go sit in a private airplane terminal,” Jill Zarin tells me. “Anyone coming off a private airplane is probably doing all right.”

She adds, “The Waldorf-Astoria shoots a Fox News show at 5:00 every day, at the Bull and Bear. All these really successful financial experts come in and it’s a live show. So, if you’re in the area of the Waldorf, go to the bar there between 5 and 6, and you never know who you might meet.”

While Jill gives real advice, Ramona Singer cautions “you can’t marry for love” if your primary goal is to marry rich.

She says, “You don’t land a rich husband. You find somebody you really love and adore, and if you support him, he’ll become rich.”

Real Housewives of New York City airs tonight at 10pm on Bravo.

Gwyneth Paltrow to Write Cookbook

February 4th, 2009

Gwyneth Paltrow is branching out all over the place these days. First she started her own lifestyle newsletter, GOOP, dedicated to nourishing the inner aspect. Now the Oscar-winning actress has plans to publish her first cookbook, sweetly titled, My Father’s Daughter.

According to publishers Janklow & Nesbit, the book will focus on the importance of togetherness at mealtime, emphasizing that cooking for your family is the ultimate expression of love. All the recipes have been designed with the entire family in mind.

The tentative publication date is slated for fall, 2010.

Gwyneth, 36, has said that she really got into cooking after the birth of her daughter in 2004. The once glamour-girl seen at the trendiest parties says she’s now more content to play housewife for her husband, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, and their children, Apple, 4, and Moses, 2.

Gwyneth also says she gets her love of cooking from her dad, Bruce Paltrow, who died in 2002 from throat cancer.

"My dad was a famous pancake maker and I’m working on [adapting his] recipe right now," she said. "I’m making mine slightly healthier."

Last fall, Gwyneth embarked on a road trip with chef Mario Batali, where the two explored and tasted their way through Spain. The trip was filmed for a PBS series Spain: On the Road Again.

Why Does Martha Stewart Adore Rappers?

November 24th, 2008

Some of our favorite bizarre TV moments lately have been Martha Stewart trading household tips with Snoop Dogg, and teaching LL Cool J how to make scary Halloween decorations.

And when the housekeeping guru was relaunching her show in 2005 after her spell in the big house, she picked P Diddy as one of her first guests.

Clearly, Martha has a bit of a thing for rappers.

At a party to celebrate the dedication of the Robert F. Kennedy bridge in New York on same day Snoop showed her the secret to ‘cognac potatoes’ on the show, she told OK! why.

"I like these guys," she told us. "I like their music, I like their expression and they’re fun. They’re actually good guests. And that’s important."

In fact, she says, "they’re great guests."

"Snoop was fabulous!," she said. "I can’t wait for P Diddy to come back."

Now she didn’t say so, but would it be too much to imagine that Martha has a new-found affinity with Diddy and Snoop — both of whom have had their own battles with the law — since she came out of the clink?

We kind of like to imagine Martha and the guys back in the green room before the show trading tales about life under lock and key!

Cash & Jessica Keep it Spicy!

May 15th, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

Things are about to get heated between Jessica Alba and her fiancé Cash Warren — but in a good way!

On May 5, the actress,27, who is expecting a baby girl with Warren,29, had a private cooking lesson at West Hollywood’s Flavor of India restaurant, where the star of the upcoming Mike Meyers comedy The Love Guru spent two hours learning how to cook authentic Indian food using natural spices and fresh ingredients.

"Jessica loves to cook," a restaurant insider reveals exclusively to OK!. "She loves all of the flavors found in Indian cuisine. She wants to arm herself with some dishes that are lean, healthy and low in fat so she can cook them at home for Cash. She’s really quite good at it."

Syesha’s Second Shot at Song!

May 13th, 2008

Every week, hardcore Idol fans scour the Internet trying to find out what the contestants will be singing ahead of time.

But here’s a first: this week you can actually watch a video of Syesha Mercado performing her song before the show comes on air!

It turns out that the song that Randy Jackson has chosen for Syesha to perform tonight just happens to be one that she has already performed on a national TV singing contest.

This week, one of each contestant’s songs is chosen by producers, one by judge and one by the contestant themselves, and Randy has told Syesha that she will be singing Alicia Keys’s Grammy-winning ballad, If I Ain’t Got You.

But in just a little bit of history repeating, Syesha sang the same tune on the doomed ABC talent-show The One: The Making Of A Star.

The 20 year old from Sarasota, Fl., was a contestant on the 2006 reality show that was canceled after just four episodes due to disastrous ratings.

But before the ax fell, Syesha gave a sultry rendition of the Keys Billboard hit sitting on top of a grand piano.

This could be seen as quite a competitive advantage for the last woman standing, who is widely regarded as the long-shot for the Idol title.

One of her two fellow finalists, David Cook, looked less than thrilled when he received the news live on a local TV show that he would be singing the diva ballad First Time I Ever Saw Your Face.

Meanwhile, Syesha will be singing a song which is not only in the middle of what the judges would call "her comfort zone" but one that she has already performed on live TV!

Stars Align for Can-Do Awards

April 16th, 2008 / Author: cwillett

Fashionable foodies unite at the Food Bank’s Fifth Annual Can-Do Awards held at NYC’s Pier Sixty.

Honoree (and Food Bank volunteer) Gwyneth Paltrow gets support from her Spain … on the Road Again reality co-star, chef Mario Battali, but gracious Gwyneth says the praise belongs to Food Bank president Lucy Cabrera.

“She’s been able to affect such change in New York,” the mother of two says. “I’m thrilled to be here and help in any way I can.”

Petra Nemcova gives one of many three-part kisses to the Extra reporter. “There’s no point in putting lipstick on me because it’s going to come off,” she chuckles.

What’s Rachael Ray’s favorite junk food?

“I never get angry at food,” she laughs. “I don’t have junk food. I don’t have anger with food. I enjoy a chip as much as I enjoy a five-course meal. I’m good with food.”

Honoree Helena Christensen says she can’t get enough Magnolia Bakery’s banana pudding as well as cheese, milk and yogurt … American Idol finalist Kimberly Locke reveals she lost 40 pounds on Jenny Craig by “doing it the healthy way” … Christy Turlington and Ed Burns confess, “I have allergies,” she says … and Katie Lee Joel loves it when hubby Billy Joel serves up his specialties — spaghetti Bolognese and strip steak.

What does Michael Stipe pony up when asked for food drive donations? “I’m from Georgia, so black-eyed peas,” he says. “That’s my favorite dish. I like to have them with ketchup.”

At 7:52, Gwyneth’s mom Blythe Danner turns up. Just in time to see her baby girl get a new trophy to keep that Oscar company.

Check out the OK! on newsstands this week for more tantalizing tidbits from the evening. Britney Spears “I Will Get My Boys Back” is the cover line.
