Metallica, Run-D.M.C. Get Hall of Fame Nods

September 22nd, 2008

Metallica and 1980s rap group Run-D.M.C. could "walk this way"–right into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

On Monday, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation announced its nine nominees for next year’s hall of fame class, including Jeff  Beck, Wanda Jackson, Little Anthony and The Imperials, War, Bobby Womack and disco and R&B group Chic.

"It’s an interesting group because it really shows the nominating committee showed some thought and energy into who should be inducted," Joel Peresman, president and CEO of the NYC-based Rock Hall foundation.  "It truly shows it’s never a closed door for any artist to be nominated."

The five leading vote-getters will be announced in January and inducted April 4, 2009, in Cleveland, Ohio.

Run-D.M.C. is known for its unique rap blends like the 1986 cover of Aerosmith’s "Walk This Way" and classics like "It’s Tricky" and "My Adidas."

”The big thing they did is took hip-hop more into the mainstream,” said Jim Henke, chief curator of the hall of fame and a member of the nominating committee. ”They did combine a lot of rock elements. As far as hip-hop groups go, they’re certainly right there at the top.”

Metallica jumped on the heavy metal wave of the ’80s and 25 years later is still selling out arenas. This month the group released ”Death Magnetic,” which marks a return to its early speed metal days.

Left off the ballot were Stevie Ray Vaughan and Bon Jovi. Both had been eligible for the first time. To be nominated an act must have released its first single or album 25 years prior.

”They’re great artists,” Peresman said. ”People’s time comes for whatever reason when it does.”

Madonna’s Hometown Wants Another Chance

April 8th, 2008 / Author: cwillett

Everyone deserves a second chance, and in this case, it’s the town of Bay City, Mich., which has asked its most famous native, Madonna, to accept the key to the city, two decades after it first refused her the honor.

Mayor Charles M. Brunner has written a letter inviting the Material Girl, who grew up in Bay City and the Detroit suburb of Rochester Hills, to accept a key to the city.
"We’ve always been proud of your accomplishments but recently your induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame reminded us that we need to honor you with the highest honor that Bay City can offer," the letter reads.

Madonna was considered for the honor back in 1985, but some thought she was too controversial — so much so, in fact, that in the late 1980s, the city even refused to accept a sculpture of Madonna from an Italian artist, citing a belief that her popularity would fade in time.

President of the Bay Arts Council, Guy Greve, wants now to commission an artist to sculpt a statue of the singer. But is this a case of too little, too late?

As of Monday night, according to the AP, calls to Madonna’s publicist had not been returned.

"The local arts council would like to pay homage for her artistic contributions," Greve said. "I could see a sculpture of her in Bay City. One of Madonna’s famous poses could be made into a sculpture."

City Commissioner Christopher J. Shannon, who fronts a local rock band, is planning a Madonna tribute album. He hopes to recruit local musicians to cover hits such as ”Like a Virgin” and ”Express Yourself.”

Madonna’s new album, Hard Candy, will be released April 29.

Madonna Admits to Having Panic Attacks

March 12th, 2008 / Author: cwillett

She’s a mega-watt music superstar and a newly honored member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And yet, despite still being able to command arenas with her irreverent charm and sexy dance beats, Madonna admits she suffers from terrible stage fright.

The iconic singer has opened up in the new issue of Dazed and Confused, admitting to having panic attacks during concert performances.

In the interview, Madonna says:

"I have moments where I feel incredibly invincible and know that I have the audience in my hand — I know that everything is absolutely perfect. And then I have panic attacks where I feel like everyone is breathing my air and I cannot live up to everybody’s expectations and I just might die on stage.

"I normally try to turn my back to the audience, take a deep breath and remind myself that it’s all temporary. I’m not worried about f**king up — I really have a panic attack that everyone else is breathing my air. It’s hard to describe.

Madonna continues, "When you have panic attacks you cannot rationalize them. Obviously there’s enough oxygen for me but it never happens outdoors, it’s normally in indoor sports arenas that I feel very close when suddenly I feel claustrophobic. It’s not a fear of performing."

VIDEO: Madonna Inducted Into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

She’s gone from Material Girl to Kaballah Mama, and now after nearly 30 years in the music business, she’s reached legend status. Yesterday Madonna — along with John Mellencamp, Leonard Cohen, the Dave Clark Five, the Ventures and songwriters Gamble and Huff — was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The new class of inductees was feted yesterday at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York, and enjoyed a special performances Mellencamp, Patti Labelle and Iggy Pop and the Stooges, who performed two Madonna classics, “Like a Virgin” and “Ray of Light.”

The night was full of tributes. Madonna was introduced and brought to the stage by recent collaborator Justin Timberlake. Timberlake recalled Madonna offering the tired singer a shot of B-12 vitamins one day. Madonna pulled out a syringe and told him to drop his pants. Afterwards “she looked at me and said, ‘That’s top shelf,’ and that was one of the greatest days of my life," he said.

In a not-so-veiled reference to his past loves, Timberlake also said, “The world is full of Madonna wannabes. I might have even dated a couple. But there is truly only one Madonna."
