Ruben Studdard Settles Into Super Stepdad
May 20th, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff
Ruben Studdard can thank American Idol for making him a household name.
The season two winner shot to fame in 2003 with Clay Aiken as runner-up, and tonight’s champ will follow in his footsteps as well as those of Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia Barrino, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks, Jordin Sparks and David Cook.
Much has changed since Ruben, 30, took home the title. The Velvet Teddy Bear married wife Surata last June, and has a new album called Love Is in stores now. How has married life changed him?
“It has settled me down a whole lot for the better, actually,” he tells me. “I take a lot of time to think about what I do right now, and what I say – especially because I have a stepdaughter, I have to be very conscious about the type of things I’m involved in because I always want to have a positive influence on her life. I’m really blessed because God gave me this opportunity to be with a woman that really cares about me for who I am and not what I have. I’m happy right now.”
Ruben adds, “She completes me, and she does not take any crap from Ruben Studdard, and I like that.”
While he and Surata are “taking our time” starting a family of their own, he is already a stepdad to her daughter.
“I never thought this would be my most favorite thing to do with my stepdaughter, but I love doing homework with her,” he says. “That is my thing. I was a music education major at college, and so I love teaching young people. I do that all the time. It’s such a special thing that we have. I get a chance to work with her when she gets out of school, and I love it. I love her.”
Favorite subject?
“Mathematics,” he grins. “I was always good at math and science, and hopefully she will be, too, with my tutoring.”
Does Ruben ever feel as if American Idol has held him back?
“In no way have they held me back,” he says. “They’ve done nothing but propelled me to do the things that I always wanted to do in my life, which is singing for millions of people every year, and I get a chance to do that.”

Ruben Studdard Wants to Dance
March 31st, 2009
Reality TV shows seem to be a series of revolving doors these days, as contestants move from one show to the next during their careers. Even Ruben Studdard, American Idol’s season 2 winner, is ready to be back in front of those reality cameras.
In a video for PopEater, Ruben responds to a question via Twitter (which apparently confused him) as to whether he’d do Dancing With the Stars.
"Twitter, it’s funny that you asked that because I have thought about being on Dancing With the Stars, he reveals. "I think it’s a wondeful show and I’d love to be a part of it."
Meanwhile, Ruben’s working on a video for his song "Together," in preparation for his new album’s release on May 19, and says he’s planning on going on tour soon after that.
VIDEO: American Idols Go To Disney World
February 17th, 2009
All seven American Idols descend on Disney’s Hollywood Studios for The American Idol Experience opening held Thursday in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
It’s the first time the winning superstars have ever been together!
It’s certainly a cause for celebration: Carrie Underwood and David Cook duet on Fleetwood Mac’s Go Your Own Way during the show, which features a handful of real-life competitors vying for the prized ticket. “Carrie looks amazing and I’m just stoked to be here,” David says. Watch OK!’s exclusive video!
What advice would Carrie give wannabe contestants?
“Do whatever you love,” the All-American Girl singer says. “Sometimes the judges may tell you you shouldn’t do it for living, but if that’s what you love, you shouldn’t give it up. So no matter what happens, if you get the magic ticket, the fast-track ticket, use it — even if you don’t, still sing.
One thing Carrie won’t be trying? Her hockey-playing boyfriend Mike Fisher’s sport. (He swings for the Ottawa Senators.) “I can’t play hockey at all,” she laughs. “I can’t even fake.”
Kelly Clarkson — who tells me her slim physique can be attributed to wearing black and not white — gives the attraction her stamp of approval.
“This is pretty cool,” the My Life Would Suck Without You singer says, turning her attention away from Michael Johns. “It’s the first time we’ve actually all been together, so it’s like a family reunion.”
Jordin Sparks can’t believe her eyes. “It’s really creepy how close to the show the attraction actually is,” she says. “It’s got the lights and the fog and the music and the judges. It’s really, really weird, but it was a lot of fun.”
What’s something the No Air singer has lost? Her love for Chris Brown, who likely ended his career by messing up OK! darling Rihanna. “It’s pretty much gone now,” she tells me.
Meanwhile, Paula Abdul has one regret tonight. “I just wish they would all sing,” she says. “It would’ve been fun to hear it.” She adds, “There’s a lot of déjà vu going on. I got a kick out of watching the success of the Idols.”
What tunes would Phil Stacey suggest picking for this attraction?
“You should definitely choose a Celine Dion song or a Whitney Houston song,” he says. “No, I’m kidding. You should do Disney songs. You should get up there and do Can You Feel The Love Tonight or A Whole New World. You’re at Disney World! You’re only going to get the opportunity to do that once.”
Although Kellie Pickler, Chris Daughtry, Clay Aiken, Jennifer Hudson and Simon Cowell send regrets, the sizeable Idol turnout also includes a giggly David Archuleta, purple-haired Diana DeGarmo, newlywed Ruben Studdard, tan-and-fit Taylor Hicks, talkative Bo Bice, friendly Ryan Seacrest, jovial Justin Guarini, shy Fantasia Barrino, Idol alum-turned-Rascal Flatts songwriter Chris Schleich, tattooed Carly Smithson, Aussie Michael Johns, chatty Ace Young, dreadlocked Jason Castro, Southern gentleman Josh Gracin, zany Sanjaya, slimmed-down Mandisa and mom LaKisha Jones.
Woo-hoo! David Cook, David Archuleta, Fantasia, Sanjaya and Jason take a spin on the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster during the afterparty held on Sunset Boulevard. No lines, no waiting!
As Kat DeLuna’s Whine Up plays, Idols enjoy blue martinis, chicken, steak, garlic mashed potatoes, sushi and the signature American Idol dessert.
Disney certainly treats its Idols well: Ace (and girlfriend Allison Fischer) “hit every ride in about seven hours, and then hit the rides we liked again.” Phil took his five-year-old daughter Chloe on Space Mountain. “It’s intense, and she actually tried it,” he says. “It was frightening for me, but she wasn’t crying at all. She loved it.” LaKisha’s five-year-old daughter Brionne would ride Space Mountain the following day. “She can’t wait to get on it. She’s a little daredevil.”
Still, some might call singing in front of hundreds of people in The American Idol Experience daring.
“I think anybody who gets a chance should absolutely do it,” David Cook says.
Bonus: I worked at Disney Hollywood Studios as part of the Walt Disney College Program, so this is quite a homecoming! I could be found sweeping Sunset Boulevard, the street on which this party is held. It is incredible – and the uniforms are still the same. ![]()

OK! Exclusive: Ruben Studdard Married
June 28th, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff
Congratulations to Ruben Studdard! OK! can exclusively reveal that the second season American Idol champ wed fiancée, girlfriend of two years Surata Zuri McCants, 30, just outside his hometown of Birmingham, Ala., at noon on Saturday.
A rep from 19 Management confirms exclusively to OK! that the black-and-white themed ceremony took place at the Canterbury United Methodist Church in Mountain Brook, Ala., and was attended by around 200 of the couple’s closest family and friends.
The Velvet Teddy Bear, whose full name is actually Christopher Ruben Studdard, met his bride in 2006 at an in-store record signing event at an Atlanta-area Wal-Mart.
"I was signing copies of my CD and she came in to get one signed for her friend who couldn’t get off from work," Ruben told The Birmingham News. "We started talking, and she was telling me about her friend. But I just looked at her and thought, `She is so beautiful.’"
"God has given me a beautiful wife," Ruben continued. "I am looking forward to having fun with her and enjoying all the blessings that have come my way so far."
Fashion designer Joseph Abboud styled the 29-year-old groom, and all of his groomsmen also wore tuxedos by Abboud, provided by local wedding outfitter Mr. Burch Formal Wear.
Blake Lewis Dropped By Label
June 26th, 2008
Another one bites the dust.
Former American Idol finalist Blake Lewis has been dropped from his record label, Arista Records, a mere six months after his debut album, A.D.D. (Audio Day Dream), hit shelves.
"Arista Records will not be picking up Blake’s option and we wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors," the label tells OK!. "Blake is still with 19 Recordings."
19 Recordings, the entertainment company behind American Idol, manages the careers of many of the show’s alumni.
Blake revealed he was let go during an interview on MJ’s big blog, but isn’t bitter about the split.
"I think it’s a great thing," he said. "I never really wanted to be with a major label. I wanted to be with an independent record label, but…after American Idol, I was kind of forced into the deal, which is good because…I still got 80 percent control of my record and make a record that I was really proud of. But I wasn’t really happy."
Released in December, A.D.D. opened at No. 10 on Billboard, but subsequent sales have been tepid. The disc is now sitting just shy of 300,000 copies. To put the number in perspective, that’s only about 5,000 more copies sold than William Hung’s 295,000 total. However, Blake doesn’t see the album as a failure.
"I didn’t really have a single that did well on the radio and I still sold 300,000," he said. "I think it’s a huge success for me, so I think it went great. People are still picking up the record."
The 26-year-old beatboxer now joins Katharine McPhee, Ruben Studdard and Taylor Hicks — the former, a runner up; the latter two, AI winners — on the label-less sidelines.
Frenchie Davis Faces Throat Surgery
March 28th, 2008
Frenchie Davis, the big voiced American Idol contestant who went on to star in the Broadway hit, Rent, is undergoing surgery to remove a polyp on her vocal chord.
Davis says the condition caused her to become tired and hoarse after performances. And although she says she’s eager to fix the problem, she is still a bit apprehensive.
"I’ve talked to other singers who had surgery. One girl said her voice went up. Others’ voices got clearer," Davis says. "I’m just excited to see and and little nervous, of course. It’s still surgery."
Davis says her main concern is that she might lose her vocal range, but says her surgeon has assured her that won’t happen. Doctors had been monitoring the polyp on her left vocal chord; when it grew, they advised her to get surgery to avoid any long-term damage. The former Idol contestant says her condition is likely from overuse and singing improperly.
"I was doing eight shows a week of Rent for four years," she says. "Now I need a vocal coach to make sure I’m singing properly so it doesn’t come back."
Davis’ surgery is scheduled for the end of April and recovery will take about a month. That will still allow her to go ahead with her national tour, Ain’t Misbehavin‘, co-starring Idol winner Ruben Studdard. The tour is set to begin this fall in New York.
In 2003, Davis was dropped from Idol because of a previous appearance on an adult Web site. In contrast, the Fox talent show took no action this season when contestant David Hernandez’s stint as a nightclub stripper was revealed or when racy photos of Antonella Barba surfaced last season on the Internet.
”I guess I had to be thrown to the wolves to afford these other contestants the luxury of being judged on their talent,” said Davis, 28. ”I guess that’s what needed to happen.”
It was ”interesting,” she added, that she was punished for something she did at age 19.
Alumni Returns!
March 3rd, 2008
The last time Blake Lewis was on the American Idol stage, he was being told that the audience had decided that the recording contract should go to his rival, Jordin Sparks. But he’s being given the chance to climb up there once more—and this time, no one can vote him off.
Blake, 26, was adored by fans and mesmerized audiences by ripping up classic songs with his beatboxing skills. Now the singer from Redmond, Washington, is ready to release his debut album, Audio Day Dream, and he’s returning to Idol as an alum to perform his new single, "How Many Words," live on the March 6 show.
Meanwhile, it has also been announced that another AI vet is coming back to the show on something of a more permanent basis. Producers have picked the new single from season two winner Ruben Studdard as the "farewell song" for this season. His version of Kenny Loggins’ "Celebrate Me Home" will send the fallen Idols on their way as we watch the highlights from their Idol experience. We wonder if it will make that farewell any easier, listening to a former winner’s eighth single bidding them good-bye?
