Barack Obama Reflects on Dads

June 18th, 2009

President Barack Obama might have quite a bit on his plate right now, you know, as the leader of an economically troubled nation in the midst of foreign and domestic crises, but he still has time for his family and daughters Sasha and Malia.

As his first Father’s Day in the White House approaches, Obama put a few of his feelings on being dad to words in an essay in this Sunday’s Parade magazine, including his emotions on growing up essentially fatherless.

An excerpt follows:

"I observe this Father’s Day not just as a father grateful to be present in my daughters’ lives but also as a son who grew up without a father in my own life.

In many ways, I came to understand the importance of fatherhood through its absence—both in my life and in the lives of others. I came to understand that the hole a man leaves when he abandons his responsibility to his children is one that no government can fill. We can do everything possible to provide good jobs and good schools and safe streets for our kids, but it will never be enough to fully make up the difference.

We need fathers to step up, to realize that their job does not end at conception; that what makes you a man is not the ability to have a child but the courage to raise one.

I know I have been an imperfect father. I know I have made mistakes. I have lost count of all the times, over the years, when the demands of work have taken me from the duties of fatherhood. There were many days out on the campaign trail when I felt like my family was a million miles away, and I knew I was missing moments of my daughters’ lives that I’d never get back. It is a loss I will never fully accept.

On this Father’s Day, I think about the pledge I made to Malia the day she was born: that I would give her what I never had—that if I could be anything in life, I would be a good father."

Presidential Pup in the Dog House

April 13th, 2009

President Barack Obama has kept his daughters – and a country of canine-lovers – waiting for months to see what kind of dog the family would adopt. And now, the wait is over, as the White House announced that a Portuguese Water Dog will be taking up residence in the executive dog house.

The six-month-old pup is currently known as Bo, says the American Kennel Club, and is a littermate of Sen. Ted Kennedy’s dog Cappy.

Reportedly named after Vice President Joe Biden’s son and Michelle Obama’s grandfather, whose nickname was Diddley, Bo is sure to be a fun pet for the young girls.

"This breed possesses a lot of energy, so without training or a job to do, the dog may entertain itself by running full-speed down the West Wing or barking at Republicans," joked Mary Burch, Ph.D, AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy and CGC Director. The breed was developed as a working animal that spent most of its day swimming and helping fishermen.

VIDEO: Naomi Watts, Clive Owen Talk Parenting

February 10th, 2009

Naomi Watts gives props to her Thierry Mugler suit during The International premiere held Monday at NYC’s AMC Loews Lincoln Square.

“It’s a beautiful suit, it’s a well-cut suit, and it gives me a waistline, which I don’t have right now,” the Aussie actress, 40, who is mom to Sasha, 18 months, and Sam, two months, laughs. (Dad is Liev Schreiber, 41.)

Up next for Naomi? Hiring a trainer. “Breastfeeding is the first initial thing that makes you lose weight,” Naomi says, adding that shedding poundage post-pregnancy #2 is “about the same” as the first time. See Naomi’s Post-Pregnancy Cravings!

Little Sasha and Sam are lucky boys. Does she hope they follow in their actor parents’ footsteps and go into showbiz?

“I want them just to follow their dreams and be whatever pleases them,” she tells me.

Producer Charles Roven praises Naomi as a mom. “She started work six weeks after she gave birth to her first child,” he tells me. “The baby was always on the set. He was always in the trailer. The baby was cute. Now she’s got two!”

Always-game Clive Owen slides over to pump up the thriller, which is in theaters February 13. (Watch OK!’s exclusive red carpet video!*)

With Naomi and Sasha, and Clive and his brood  — which includes wife Sarah-Jane and daughters Hannah, 12, and Eve, 9 — it was a family affair on the movie set.

“My girls were around whenever they could be,” the British actor, 46, says. “We traveled a lot on this film, so it’s all around school.”

Now that Hannah is almost a teenager, is he ready for her to start dating?

“No, not at all,” Clive says with a smirk. “I don’t want to talk about it. I’m in denial.”

What professions does he hope they go into?

“Whatever makes them happy,” he tells me. “Whatever they want.”

The City’s Olivia Palermo and boyfriend Brad Leinhardt dash inside. They can’t miss it!

The International is in theaters February 13.

Naomi Watts’ Post-Pregnancy Cravings

February 10th, 2009

For all the new moms out there struggling to shed that baby weight, get ready to have another reason to be jealous of Naomi Watts.

"I eat more now than I did when I was pregnant!" says The International star, who gave birth to her second child, Samuel, on Dec. 13, tell OK!. "With breastfeeding, you have to eat… and you’re always hungry."

And even though she’s already back to looking like a million bucks, the 40-year-old beauty confesses, "I haven’t even done much exercise yet, but I intend to."

Meanwhile, 2-year-old son Alexander — or, as Naomi and hubby Liev Schreiber call him, Sasha — is turning into a real chatterbox.

"Sasha is just starting to talk now," she tells OK!. "Not sentences, but he’s got a lot of words… Other than ‘mom’ and ‘dad,’ ‘turtle’ is his favorite one."

Daniel Radcliffe Invites Obama Girls to Hogwarts

January 27th, 2009

President Barack Obama’s daughters, Malia and Sasha, are big Harry Potter fans– and now they may get to meet their favorite Hogwarts wizard!

The Daily Beast is reporting that Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe has offered take the Obama girls on a personal tour of the movie set. Describing President Obama as "everything the rest of the world liked about America and now likes again," Radcliffe tells the paper he is "so proud and happy" for America.

"I’d like to take this opportunity to issue a public invitation to the Obamas that if their daughters would like a private tour of the Harry Potter set, I would be honored to be their personal tour guide," the actor told the paper.

Radcliffe, who will soon begin filming the final installment in the Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, also commented on his former Potter c0-star and Twilight hottie Robert Pattinson’s new fame as a sexy vampire.

When asked who he thinks girls lust after more, Radcliffe said, "I can safely say…[Pattinson]. He is much prettier and can be much more charming. And he can do that thing of being sultry and sexy. Rob can just sort of stand there and look at something and start to smolder. And I just can’t do that. I’m a natural fidget."

Susan Sarandon Says Obama Girls “Just Lovely”

January 20th, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

OK! caught up with Susan Sarandon at The Creative Coalition Dinner Pre-Gala Dinner at Teatro Goldini in Washington, D.C., on Monday, where the actress shared her thoughts on President Barack Obama’s adorable daughters, Malia and Sasha.

"I met them in Iowa. I was there, and my daughter has a great picture of us all together," Sarandon told OK!. "They were just lovely, and really smart. I don’t think that they seemed particularly phased [by the attention]. I think that they are going to handle fame fine."

Sarandon, who is in D.C. to support President Obama’s Inauguration as the 44th president of the United States, said the Obama girls’ grounded natures come from good parenting.

"Their family structure is very tight, and responsible," she tells OK!. " It’s not like they have been thrust into the public life overnight. This is certainly bigger, but they seem very grounded. They are a great family, and they have a great extended family. I can’t even imagine giving them any advice. I am sure that they have gotten it from their parents."

“I Won For You,” Obama Tells His Girls

January 14th, 2009

Since when did politics become such a tear-jerker?

President elect and the most famous daddy in the world—Barack Obama—has written a heartfelt letter to his little girls, explaining why he had to turn their lives upside down and run for the White House.

In the emotional note, to be published in Parade magazine this Sunday, the Pres-to-be lets us in on his private hopes and dreams for Malia and Sasha, hands down some pearls of wisdom from their grandmother, and dishes out a little fatherly advice of his own.

President Obama explains to the girls that when they were born, it showed him that his own dreams of success weren’t the most important thing in the world — and eventually led him to run for President.

"I soon found that the greatest joy in my life was the joy I saw in yours," he writes in the two-page letter. "And I realized that my own life wouldn’t count for much unless I was able to ensure that you had every opportunity for happiness and fulfillment in yours.

"In the end, girls, that’s why I ran for President: because of what I want for you and for every child in this nation."

Movingly, Obama passes on the lessons that his mother, Anne Dunham, who died in 1995, taught him.

"With the great privilege of being a citizen of this nation comes great responsibility," he says. "That was the lesson your grandmother tried to teach me when I was your age."

And he ends the letter, signed, ‘Love Dad’, by telling them his take on the real secret to success. "It is only when you hitch your wagon to something larger than yourself that you will realize your true potential," he imparts.

"I am so proud of both of you. I love you more than you can ever know," he ends.

We can’t take it anymore! Someone pass the tissues!

Vanessa Williams Talks Kids, Jobs and Used Cars

December 17th, 2008

Vanessa Williams’ son Devin is gearing up for his first job now that he’s getting ready for his first car.

The mother-son team recently signed Allstate Insurance’s Home For The Holidays teen safe driving contract.

Vanessa, 45, is a single mom to Melanie, 21, Jillian, 19, Devin, 15, and Sasha, 8.

What’s the best thing about having children? “It’s never-ending unconditional love,” the Ugly Betty star tells me.

But just because she’s on a hit show doesn’t mean her kids are on easy street.

“The past two girls, as soon as they got jobs, they got used cars,” Vanessa says. “No one got a brand new car. We’ll see what kind of used car he gets.”

While Melanie worked in a boutique to pay for a “colorful, yellow, used” Volvo S40 and Jillian worked at a children’s day care to fund her ride, Devin may find his future in a shoe store.

“I want something that deals with fashion,” he says. “I’m really into sneakers, clothes and everything.”

And about the big rock he’s sporting in one ear? He got it for eighth-grade graduation.

“It’s faux,” Vanessa says. “It isn’t real, believe me.”

Inside the New White House

November 14th, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

With a new, young First Family set to move into the White House this January, inquiring minds want to know what will go on behind closed doors for the Obamas as Barack Obama takes on the role of President of the United States.

For example, surely stylish Michelle Obama will want to team up with her husband to redecorate the private residence areas with their own touch (click here for OK!’s cover story on her private world!); and will Malia and Sasha be able act like the young girls they are and have slumber parties, pizza, and hang up their Hannah Montana posters?

Momlogic.com enlisted the help of Claire Whitcomb, author of Real Life at the White House: 200 Years of Daily Life at America’s Most Famous Residence, to get down to the bottom of those really important questions.

Yes, the Obamas will have their own decorator, Whitcomb says, who will help them with the process of making the White House their home. Sasha and Malia will be able to set up their rooms exactly how they want it, and even have sleepovers – Margaret Truman once had a slumber party in the Lincoln Bedroom!
