Dakota Fanning: 14 Going on 40

January 8th, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

Not many child stars can successfully transition to more mature film roles, but Dakota Fanning is proving she’s no ordinary actress. At just 14, the young actress has already worked with Hollywood heavyweights like Tom Cruise, Denzel Washington and Sean Penn.

Recently, she starred as a teenage girl coming of age in the turbulent 1960’s in the Secret Life of Bees. And at this year’s 20th Annual Palm Springs Film Festival Gala, Fanning received the prestigious Rising Star award from her Secret Life of Bees co-star, Paul Bettany.

"I have never been here before," the actress told OK!. "It’s so amazing and so nice. I feel very lucky."

Fanning has accomplished quite a bit in her young professional life — something she says she hopes to keep adding to.

"You know there is so much that I want to do and I have my whole life ahead of me to to [them]. To act for the rest of my life, that’s just really what I love. I am looking for what is to come."

Dakota, who attends a public high school in L.A. and even joined the cheerleading squad, says she tries to keep her life as normal as possible.

"I think it’s great… It’s good to have that [Hollywood] lifestyle, and I am really fortunate to have both.

Jennifer’s Family Nightmare

October 29th, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

This last year has been an amazing year for Jennifer Hudson. Besides enjoying a career high that currently includes a starring role in the film The Secret Life of Bees, and her self-titled debut album, the Oscar-winning actress became engaged to fiance David Otunga. Life couldn’t have looked better for the girl who first got her start as an American Idol castoff.

But on Oct. 24, Hudson’s luck took a tragic turn as news broke of the brutal murders of her mother, Darnell Donerson, 57, and big brother, Jason Hudson, 29. The two were found shot to death in their home on Chicago’s South Side. Jennifer’s 7-year-old nephew, Julian King, was missing.

The actress flew from Florida where she’d been promoting The Secret Life of Bees, to Chicago to aid in the search for the second grader. On Oct. 25, Jennifer offered a $100,000 reward for Julian’s return, along with a heartwrenching plea on her Web Site, "Please keep praying for our family and that we get Julian King back home safely," she wrote.

Sadly, the family’s worst nightmare came true on Oct. 27, when police discovered Julian’s lifeless body in the back seat of a 1994 white Chevrolet Suburban which they said had been taken from the murder scene three days earlier. On the day she was supposed to launch a world tour for her self-titled debut CD, Jennifer instead had to sit in the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, waiting for officials to identify the body of her little nephew.

"At 27, Jennifer was on the top of the world–Oscars, honors, accolades–and someone just stole her dream away," Jenifer Lewis of Broadway’s original cast of Dreamgirls told OK!.

Jennifer, along with three other relatives, had the catastophic task of confirming that the victim’s body was Julian’s before authorities announced the determinations. An autopsy was scheduled for Oct. 28, the cause of death believed to be multiple gunshot wounds.

On Oct. 24, police picked up Hudson’s brother-in-law and Julian’s step-father, William Balfour, 27. An ex-con who spent 7 years in jail for, among other crimes, attempted murder, Balfour has since been turned over to state officials for a parole violation, which will keep him behind bars while the case is being investigated. While no charges have been filed, police are calling Balfour a "person of interest."

As for Jennifer’s state of mind, a friend tells OK! that the actress is doing her best to keep it together for her remaining relatives.

"Jennifer only has her sister left — they need to move on together," Hudson’s pal Marco tells OK!. "But she is a very strong lady. With her family, friends and fans standing behind her, she will get through this."

Jennifer Hudson Dispels the Rumors

October 7th, 2008

Jennifer Hudson wants everyone to know that she has "never been happier." The Oscar winning actress and singer, 27, recently became engaged to fiance, Harvard-educated attorney David Otunga and recently told Jet Magazine all about the proposal.

"He proposed and gave me a ring," Hudson said. "It was very romantic; he’s a very unique, different individual. I am happy."

Hudson shot down rumors that her engagement is a publicity stunt and proudly wears a 5-carat Neil Lane platinum ring.

The happy news also accompanies the release of Hudson’s first CD, and a starring role in the upcoming movie The Secret Life of Bees, co-starring Alicia Keys and Queen Latifah. "It’s a film about togetherness and sisterhood," Jennifer said. "At the hardest times, those women came together and showed what we could do if we all just come together."

Dakota Fanning Shines During ‘Secret Life of Bees’ Premiere

September 13th, 2008

Dakota Fanning gets her first romantic kiss in The Secret Life of Bees, which premieres at Roy Thomson Hall during the Toronto International Film Festival.

Was she nervous?

“I wasn’t,” she admits. “We know each other really well. We’re beyond nerves.”

The young actress, 14, grew so close to cast members Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys and Queen Latifah she cried at the end of the shoot. “I have pictures of me crying at the end,” Dakota says. “I really do.”

Latifah debuts a new ‘do on the red carpet.  “I cut it right before I went on vacation, but I’ve been swimming,” she says. “It was curly.”

She continues, “I don’t even know who I’m wearing.  I literally came from vacation to here. I don’t know anything. I know I’ve got a hot-ass pair of shoes on and a bangin’ dress and my hair is styled to the nines and I’m feeling good.”

Here is Alicia, who brought her plunging black dress-clad mom along for the show. How did cast bond?

She says, “We were very good about making sure we explored our stories together because especially as sisters – who our parents were, how they raised us, what was the differences between us, what were the issues we had growing up, that really brought us together so we understood more than just each other.”

In fact, they became so close Queen, Jennifer and Dakota cheered her on during her Super Bowl performance.

“Yes!” she says. “First of all, Latifah was like ‘oh, you get to go to the Super Bowl?’ That was pretty funny. The minute it was over, they were screaming on my phone saying how great it was. It was really sweet. We are a family.”

What happened with the ladies behind the scenes?

“Singing,” Jennifer says. “They were like ‘Jennifer, sing – sing now.’ I was like ‘am I a jukebox or something?’ Everyday. I was like ‘if I sing another song, it’ll be a musical.’ But it was a lot of fun. We come together and sing along. Sophie was like ‘but I can’t sing,’ and she ended up being the one singing in the film. She was dying! It was a lot of fun.”

Sophie Okonedo performed in front of these Grammy-and-Oscar winners.

“I had to sing a song in front of three of the most famous singers in America, and I can’t sing a note. It was really, really embarrassing but I got through it and they gave me a round of applause.”

Tristan Wilds, 19, who has gone on to 90210 fame since filming Secret Lives, gives Dakota her first kiss.

“I am Dakota’s first kiss. I would get a badge and insert it on my heart. I was pretty nervous. I was like ahhh! There was a roll of breath mints by the sink. By the time we were done, it was all the way down to there.”

The Secret Life of Bees is in theaters October 17.
