Hot Shots! 8/11/08-8/17/08

My name is Jennifer Birn, and I’m a Groupie

August 8th, 2008

I’ll write a more detailed blog tomorrow, but I just walked in the door from playing groupie at a practice session for Band from TV (Thanks Mr. Bob Guiney) and had so much fun I wanted to share right away – although now I’ve gotta go to a party for the Madden NFL 09 VIP Premiere at STK/Coco de Ville.

A former band guy’s girlfriend, I forgot how much fun going to band practice can be. People had to fill in at practice for the otherwise committed Greg Grunberg (drums) and Teri Hatcher (female vocalist) who will both be performing at the show (NETFLIX LIVE! ON LOCATION CONCERT AND SCREENING) Saturday in LA, but I got to hang out while the rest of the band, Desperate Housewives James Denton (guitar), House’s resident hottie Jesse Spencer on rock violin, Heroes’ Adrian Pasdar (guest appearance on guitar) and lead vocalist Bachelor Bob Guiney as they rehearsed for the performance, the proceeds for which will all go to charity, as does every effort from the hottest band on TV.

James (Jamie as Bob called him) Denton (such a nice guy) told me The Band from TV initially formed about three years ago when he and Greg Grunberg met at a charity event to raise awareness for autism. Later they met Bob Guiney, at a charity event to raise money for cancer research. Now, they all jam together to raise money for various charities – and they’re good, and entertaining, and I was proud to be their groupie du jour.

I remember a time when I thought the term ‘groupie’ had a negative connotation. When I was in college and used to hang out watching my share of bands I’d insist I was ‘friends with the band,’ not a ‘band groupie.’ But today, older and wiser, I wear the groupie label with pride, I mean, what’s wrong with enjoying entertaining talent and sharing your admiration/adoration? I’ve decided nothing, so I’m proud to be a groupie for The Band from TV. Maybe I’ll start a fan club. Or not, I can hardly maintain this blog, but if someone else does I’ll join ;) xo

Teri Hatcher: No Desperate Singer

July 18th, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

Teri Hatcher is no desperate singer.

The Desperate Housewives star told OK! how much she loves her side gig, singing with her TV co-star, James Denton.

"Jamie and I are doing some more singing with the band," revealed Teri, who also sang on American Idol Gives Back last seasonWhen asked what she likes about singing, Teri laughed, "Certainly not the insecurity! We were just at a rehearsal the other night–Jamie is part owner of a baseball team and we’re doing a performance there–and they asked me to sing a few songs."

Teri continues, "It’s just sort of that fun other side of you, t’s not really for anyone else.  It’s not to be critiqued; it’s not to be judged.  It’s just probably on the same level as people who like to play that guitar hero!"

Carly’s Teri Hatcher Moment

April 30th, 2008

I’m good for two or three votes when I like someone on American Idol. But I got nothing on Teri Hatcher. The Desperate Housewives star and Idol fanatic had her cell phone in overdrive for last week’s castoff, Carly Smithson. Thank goodness voting starts after 9 p.m.!

“She came over and said to me, ‘I voted for you 60 times last night,’” Carly revealed when she stopped by the office on Monday. “That’s pretty cool.”

Now that she’s returning home, Carly looks forward to finishing the geisha tattoo on her right arm. “I love everything about Japan and I think that geisha’s are just beautiful.” The design has a snake woven through it because, “my husband Todd (who was with Carly during her visit!), says I look like Medusa when I wake up in the morning because I’ve got this curly hair and it’s always like these mad snakes.”

The 24-year-old Irish chanteuse is also itching to record her next album. She recorded her first, Ultimate High, for MCA records in 2001. Carly, who was signed to the label as a teen, stressed it wasn’t the millions of dollars deal the media has hyped. “Who spends $2.2. million on a 15-year-old?,” she laughed. “I know for a fact that I drove a Volkswagen Golf that my dad bought. They said I was driving some ritzy convertible.” During the show, Carly survived through the frenzied press with support from her Idol counterparts, David Cook and Michael Johns. “Other contestants that had records and deals were so angry that I was being lashed out on, so they were really supportive,” she said, then added reflectively, “They say any publicity is good publicity.”

That’s true Carly. And sometimes when it’s bad, that’s even better! For more exclusive talk with Carly, click here.

American Idol, the elimination show, airs Wednesday at 9 p.m. on Fox.

Teri Hatcher Doesn’t Want to Grow Old

April 29th, 2008

Aging in Hollywood is a sensitive issue for actresses, but for Teri Hatcher, it’s aging in a storyline that’s giving her wrinkles!

In the two-hour Desperate Housewives season finale next month, the show will flash-forward five years into the future, which means all five lovely ladies must age to accommodate the time-shift. However, the idea of growing old in front of the camera – even with makeup – doesn’t sit well with 43-year-old Teri.

“She is having tricky conversations with writers and directors about how she should look five years from now,” a source close to the dramedy tells OK!. “It seems as though they have hit a touchy subject for the ever youthful Miss Hatcher.”

Come on, Teri, it’s just acting!

(Yari Film Group)
Starring: Samuel L. Jackson, Josh Hartnett, Teri Hatcher
A journalist (Hartnett) looking for his big break finds an ex–boxing pro (Jackson) living on the streets of Denver. With both of their names thrust into the limelight, secrets begin to unfold. Hartnett proves time and again that he’s got the makings of a truly great actor, and Jackson gives a heartbreakingly authentic performance. Think of this as a tearjerker with a happy ending.
