Terrence Howard: Iron Man 2 Re-Casting a “Very Bad Choice”

April 22nd, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

After the runaway success of last summer’s Iron Man, it came as a big surprise to many that one of the film’s big stars, Terrence Howard, had been replaced for the currently filming sequel by Don Cheadle. Now, the Hustle & Flow star is speaking out about the situation — and he’s not happy.

In a new interview on Parade.com, Terrence says that the producers of the film, "made a choice, and it was a very, very bad choice. They didn’t keep their word. They didn’t honor my contract. They produced a great bounty with the first one but they put it all in the storehouse and you were not allowed in."

And, at least according to Terrence, he wasn’t the only one getting short-changed by the filmmakers. "They did the same thing with Gwyneth Paltrow, from what I’ve been told," he claims. "They did it with almost everyone except Robert Downey."

All bad feelings aside, Terrence says he doesn’t plan on letting his sour grapes get the best of him. "I believe in karma. When someone does something wrong, you don’t have to get them back," he explains. "Everything right will return the favor for you."

Terrence Howard Talks Holidays

December 3rd, 2008

Terrence Howard is a family guy who cherishes the holidays.

What’s the best thing about being a dad at this time of year?

“Just seeing the joy that your children have at being home for vacation,” the father of three, 39, tells me. “Remembering when I was a kid myself, and seeing the younger version of myself smile up at me, and knowing that I have the opportunity to make all of their wishes come true.”

What are his kids Aubrey, Hunter and Heavenly into these days?

“My kids love music, so they want instruments, but mostly what they want is my time. This business can pull you away a lot, so they want me home.”

Martha Stewart Gives Turkey Day Tips

November 25th, 2008

Martha Stewart impresses during the Royal Gala, held at NYC’s Waldorf=Astoria. Just in time for Thanksgiving, the domestic doyenne turns on the charm when asked for holiday meal suggestions.

“Be organized,” the Martha host, 67, tells me. “Otherwise you’re going to make a mess of it. And I think most people make a mess of it if they’re not organized. And have good recipes. Test them out before you try and serve them to a big group.”

She mugs with Russell Simmons before Brittany Snow, Terrence Howard, Mario, Sean Kingston and Paulina Porizkova strut through.

Here’s gracious Dr. Drew Pinsky, who gets cagey when asked what star should next appear on his VH1 reality show Celebrity Rehab. “If I find someone who needs treatment, I have to treat them then,” he tells me. “I can’t say ‘hey, wait ‘til we start filming in two months.’ We’ve had to put a few people in psychiatric hospitals.”

Dr. Ruth quips she’d like royalty to “buy” her as she is up for auction, but refuses to name Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie – or anyone – as the sexiest celebrity couple.

“You know why?” the diminuitive doctor, 80, begins. “For me, sex is up in the brain. It’s not only the gorgeous-looking guy or the beautiful woman. It has to be somebody who can have a conversation where there’s some intellect.”

RDJ Talks About Iron Man Switch

November 6th, 2008

The decision to replace Terrence Howard in the upcoming Iron Man 2 is turning into quite the controversy!

On Thursday, Robert Downey Jr. revealed his thoughts on the switch – (Don Cheadle will replace Howard in the sequel as Col. James "Rhodey" Rhodes) telling MTV News, "I had nothing to do with that decision. I love Terrence very, very much. That’s all I’ll say because I haven’t talked to him yet. I’ve always admired Don Cheadle. It’s one of those situations where I still don’t quite know what happened or why. Here’s what happens too: Things happen and you wind up commenting on them before you’ve actually talked to the people and it’s in poor taste."

Robert went on to say that his first priority is to Iron Man director Jon Favreau and making sure the sequel is just as good as the first film.

"I think the important thing with the Iron Man franchise is to not do too much too soon and to make sure we don’t piss off the public that puts us in the position we’re in," Downey said. "We’ve just got to keep rolling up our sleeves higher further up the elbow. If we show up and we’re in the right head space and our heart’s in the right spot and we really think about the audience at every turn and we don’t try to stamp our hipness on to anything. It’s very interactive."

Terrence Howard Sued for $5 Million

October 27th, 2008

It’s been a tough month for Terrence Howard. First, the actor was reportedly shocked to learn that he’d been replaced in the upcoming film Iron Man 2. Now, the one-time Oscar nominee has been slapped with a $5 million lawsuit in which he faces allegations of assault for punching a man in January.

The lawsuit claims Howard punched composer Tex Allen (brother of director/choreographer Debbie Allen) during rehearsals for the Broadway revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof that Howard headlined last winter.

The actor’s publicist dismissed any hoopla associated with the lawsuit, telling E! News, "We are aware of the allegations and expect this frivolous suit to be dismissed."

No comment yet from the Allen camp.

Terrence Howard on Iron Man Ouster

October 20th, 2008

As the industry publication Hollywood Reporter recently reported, Don Cheadle will apparently be replacing Terrence Howard in the next Iron Man movie as Jim Rhodes, Tony Stark’s best friend, in a switch-up that has even the actors themselves confused.

"It was the surprise of a lifetime," Terrence tells NPR, sounding none too pleased. "There was no explanation. [The contract] just…up and vanished. I read something in the trades implicating that it was about money or something, but apparently the contracts that we write and sign aren’t worth the paper that they’re printed on, sometimes. Promises aren’t kept, and good faith negotiations aren’t always held up."

However all may not yet be set in stone, as Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige told MTV News.

“As is the policy with most people, when you talk about dotting I’s and crossing T’s, certainly that isn’t the case yet on a number of things we’re doing,” he says. “But that [Hollywood Reporter story] was not an announcement. That was, as it tends to happen in the business, is rumors and leaks and things like that. I do think there will be clarity soon.”

Do tell – we’re sure Terrence would be interested in any further developments involving his own career..

Iron Man Cast Switch-Up

October 14th, 2008

Expect to see Don Cheadle suiting up as War Machine, Iron Man’s best friend and fellow hero in Iron Man 2, instead of Terrence Howard.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Don will replace Terrence in the Marvel Studios film as Jim Rhodes, the wing man and best bud to Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark.

The move comes as a surprise, as one of the last scenes in last summer’s blockbuster hit featured Terence sizing up a silver superhero suit and saying, "Next time."

Marvel Studios hasn’t commented yet, but sources say they wanted to work with Don and that Terrence’s deal fell through due to financial wrangling.

Justin Theroux is writing the screenplay, and Jon Favreau will return as the director. Iron Man fans are in for a bit of a wait, however: the flick isn’t scheduled for release until May of 2010.
