TV HUNK DISCOVERED: Martin Ritchie

August 26th, 2008

My fave supermodel-turned-model agency owner Janice Dickinson is back with her can’t-miss-an-episode series, The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency, tonight!

The outspoken entrepreneur has moved in a mansion in the Hollywood Hills with her models, and they’re going to have to listen to her, even the model who is hearing impaired.

I caught up with  Martin Ritchie to find out what it’s like to work for Janice, challenges in the industry for a deaf model and just how steamy things will get inside those model walls!

What’s it like working for Janice? Is she like a second mom?
Terrific and I loved every minute of it. She is absolutely brilliant and easy to work with because I listen to her all the time! (laughs) She is like a second mom to me and I do miss our time in the model house together. She showed me her love and affection. That was something that I never have felt. I used to have many daydreams of her becoming my mom and knowing that her children must be very grateful and happy to have her.

Why did you want to become a model?
I always felt becoming a model would be helpful for me. I’d like to be a spokesperson and to be an activist as well. I seriously want to make some differences in this world.

Is it a challenge to deal with your deafness in the industry?
I’ve dealt with many pathetic excuses and discriminations while I was meeting some clients and agencies. They simply said, “You are not what we are looking for this time. “I was very frustrated and I refused to give up. I still am fighting back for my own right. Yes, it’s definitely a challenge for me.

Are you single?

Yes, I am single!

Who is your ideal partner?
A guy with great personality who is mature and handsome and in his early 30s is definitely perfect for me!

What would be the ultimate company to model for?
Honestly, I would love to model for Guess Jeans company.  Being a Guess model would be something so magical and a dream come true for me!

Can you give us a sneak peek of the drama coming up on the show?
This season is so outrageous and very entertaining! Some twists this season are that Janice brought all new models in the house with the original models from the previous season, and yes, the hearing impaired model that Janice picked is living in the model house, as well! It’s definitely shocking to everyone. I can assure you guys that you are going to love and hate some models. I am not telling you more. You just have to be patient and watch it on Oxygen!

You know we are!

JANICE DICKINSON’S “GENIUS” PLAN

August 26th, 2008

If you watched The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency last night – and you know you did – you’ll fully aware that Janice is shacking up with her newest discoveries. Yep, the diva is Big Brother!

On Monday at a walk-off modeling competition held at the NBC Experience store in New York City, Janice revealed to me at that moving in was actually a genius move. "And I’m the only one that can do it," she declared.

"I installed the surveillance system in the house, and I watch them 24/7 because when you go on location around the world, when Kate Moss goes to Japan to do a Nikon commercial, she has to cohabit with other people like hairdressesers, makeup artists and stylists," Janice explained. "You have to be able to get along and work with your team."

Ever the trailblazer, Janice introduced viewers to Martin Ritchie on her show’s premiere last night, a model who is deaf and speaks through an interpreter.

Janice poopooed away the notion that she’s doing anything out of the ordinary.

"It doesn’t matter if he can’t hear. I think he’s as great a model as anyone else, watch you’ll see," she declared.

"It’s a marvelous installation of a blend of what makes America."

Janice proved that point yet again when she, along with her son Nathan Fields and veteran JD models J.P. Calderon and Crystal Truehart crowned Amber Walker from Stamford, Conn., as the $1000 winner of the contest.

"It’s about time the sisters are recognized," Janice told the crowd.  "She’s got the ‘It’ factor."

And I got to see a bevy of drag queens who hosted the event work the runway. And yes, I was taking notes!

Janice Dickinson Wants to Talk!

May 23rd, 2008

The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency will return to TV late this summer, and Janice is taking on her biggest project yet: shacking up in a house with her employees!

I’m more than obsessed with this show, so I jumped at the chance to jump on the couch with the diva herself.

Sitting in the lobby of the Ritz Carlton at Central Park, Janice fended off an amorous fan who was taping our interview with his cell phone by saying she would film him right back!

The self-proclaimed first supermodel had more than enough to say, naturally, about her new model digs, her new talk show and her love life. And I ate up every minute!

Your personality is bigger than life. Is it just for the cameras?

Absolutely no! I know how to be. For years I got paid for my beauty, now I get paid for my wit.  I’m working on my fourth book as well, 50 and Fabulous.

What’s the key to being 50 and fabulous?

It’s all about humor. I’m 54, and I have it all covered, with two children and everything that I’ve been through that others haven’t: alcohol and drug dependency, incest, you name it. I’m the real deal.

You’re moving into a house with the models this season.

I need to keep an eye on the kids. My show is not a reality show or a contest. It’s a docudrama of our industry. I’m going to let you come!

Are there plans to open a plus-size division?

I would say no, but I will give it a try. My son will end up running it. I was in the gym for two hours this morning before I saw you. I’m in the gym every day of my life.

Girls didn’t look like you when you started modeling.

They were all fair and blonde, and I broke the mold. I held my ground and the more they started looking like me. Thus you had Gia, who Angelina Jolie played, and Cindy Crawford came along. Then the ethnic girls started to push in. So I feel proud of the fact that I was the world’s first supermodel in breaking the mold of ethnic-looking models.

You’re also launching a TV talk show?

I’m in talks with two networks to host my own show. I’m going to help other women to just be.

How’s your love life?

I’ve been in a relationship for a year with, let’s call him Joe, and it’s monogamous. He’s from San Antonio, he’s phenomenal, and I don’t cheat. He likes my kids. He’s an architectural lighting wizard, and he’s just groovy. He plays guitar and I love him to death. He’s got nothing to do with this business.

What would we be surprised to learn about you?

I’m an AIDS activist and I love animals. We raised another $47,000 for AIDS when I did [the U.K. series] I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here, for the Elton John  AIDS Foundation. When I’m not doing the show, I raise money for AIDS, that’s what I do.

What’s your favorite body part?

It’s my mind. I love what goes on inside. Everyone thinks I’m crazy, but I’m not. I love to exercise the brain muscle. I really love journalism, writing, literature and all that stuff. That’s what I love. So do you. That’s why you’re a journalist, and a beautiful one at that. But that kind of body part? My ass!

Look for The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency to return to Oxygen this summer.

JANICE WORKS THE RUNWAY AGAIN

December 4th, 2007

I can hardly contain my glee over tonight’s guilty viewing pleasure. The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency is back, and I am so ready to work that runway, girl!

So what does the incomparable supermodel-turned-entrepreneur have in store for faithful Dickinsonians as she rolls out the red carpet in season three? How about 12 new models to start things off? “We open up a Latin division and I have never been prouder,” Janice told me. “They happen to be some of the hottest, sexiest and best models I have ever seen … heck they are so good they could model on Mars!”

But it’s not going to be all beach shoots and designer duds. “I’m pushing these models harder than ever and putting them in situations you wouldn’t believe.” That includes working it Miami style as she and her models protest the wearing of fur. "I have to talk to an organization called Model for Jesus that did not want one of my models to take her clothes off."

That would have been a shame, especially when it comes to some of my favorite male models from Janice’s blooming biz getting naked!

The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency returns Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 10:30 p.m. on Oxygen.
