Robert Downey Jr. Among Walk of Fame Honorees

June 20th, 2008

It’s definitely the year of Robert Downey, Jr.!

Enjoying one of the — if not the — most fruitful years of this career, the Iron Man star, whose film just eclipsed the $300 million mark stateside alone, will receive his very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame next year, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has announced.

Also in the Class of 2009, which consists of 25 celebrities, are Cameron Diaz, Tim Burton, Charles Durning, Hugh Jackman, Sir Ben Kingsley, The Amazing Race mastermind Mark Burnett, Kyra Sedgwick, Babyface, Ralph Fiennes, Shakira and John Stamos.

Accomplished husband-and-wife duo Felicity Huffman and William H. Macy will each add Walk of Fame stars to their long joint list of accolades as well.

All stars will be unveiled on Hollywood Boulevard next year. Exact dates for each star memorialization have yet to be determined.

George Clooney, Jennifer Garner Wow At National Board of Review Awards

January 24th, 2008

George Clooney, with girlfriend Sarah Larson in tow, yuks it up with everyone he can at the National Board of Review Awards, where he is being honored for best actor in Michael Clayton.

He grabs my arm and gives me a knowing wink. Where does he keep his awards? “I have a room,” he says. “I actually have a room. I have one [award].”

How does he feel about the acclaim for his role? “It’s definitely better than feeling terrible about it later,” self-deprecating George says.

What does co-star Tilda Swinton think of the couple? “I love Sarah,” she says. “She’s a beautiful girl, really beautiful. I never knew him before he was with her, but he seems pretty happy to me.”

Here’s the mesmerizing Jennifer Garner. When a Spanish TV presenter from Calle Que Calle asks Mrs. Affleck if he can kiss her hand, she obliges. As she lifts her blinged-out hand, Jennifer coos, “bless your heart.”

Hubby Ben, who wins best directorial debut for Gone Baby Gone, moves through separately. His best supporting actor brother Casey’s lips are sealed about his new baby.

Best actress winner Julie Christie isn’t sure if her jewels are Bvlgari – or if they’re even real — while Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones sail through.

Honoree Javier Bardem is thrilled to see his old buddy from Spain’s Calle Que Calle, who whips out a fake Oscar in case the prestigious awards show doesn’t happen due to the writers’ strike.

Denzel Washington, who accompanies his Great Debaters co-star Jurnee Smollett, says the cast “picked themselves. They stood out. It was a good feeling.”

Meanwhile, Emily Mortimer doesn’t feel badly about leaving her son Sam, 4, with their “fabulous” Serbian au pair. “He’s pleased when we go out because he gets to stay up late and have fun with her,” Mrs. Alessandro Nivola says.

Best director winner Tim Burton has a little one at home, too. How’s the month-old daughter he shares with Helena Bonham Carter? “Good, I think,” he tells me.

Speaking of family, here’s Glenn Close and her 20-year-old daughter Annie. Does she like coming to these events?

“It’s very good,” Annie laughs. “I’m blinded, but it’s great.”

Oh, and here’s Phil Donahue and wife Marlo Thomas. “Our film is titled Body of War,” he tells me. “It’ll be in a theater near you soon, and I hope you’ll come. I’ll park your car.”

What an offer!

Golden Globes For Johnny, Keira, Tina

January 14th, 2008

The Golden Globe spotlight shines on Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley, James McAvoy and Tina Fey — even though there was no ceremony due to the writers’ strike.

Johnny, who took home best actor and best picture - musical or comedy for Sweeney Todd, talked about the best part of working with director Tim Burton. “I think working with Tim takes on a life of its own,” he says.

Atonement won best film – drama and best original score. I caught up with the romantic drama’s Keira Knightley and James McAvoy.

Keira opened up about the pressures of looking good.

“I would be extremely stupid if I said my looks have absolutely nothing to do with what I do because it’s a visual medium,” Keira tells me. “I’m perfectly aware that the face and the body help. I’m naturally thin. I’m not working out at all at the moment and my body hasn’t fallen apart yet. I’m young, I’m aware it could all go south at any minute.”

James may have expanded his fanbase with the win. The Chronicles of Narnia star tells me he is mostly recognized by young children.

“I like children, and now I realized have hundreds of thousands of them,” James tells me. “What’s interesting is adults never recognize me through the makeup but kids under the age of 8 can see right through it. Weird. As soon as they get a wee bit older, they stop seeing it, but yet the first thing they always ask is ‘where’s your legs?’ They seem horrified. It’s a look of confusion, that the world isn’t actually the way their mother told them it was. It’s really sweet.”

Perhaps best TV actress - musical or comedy winner Tina Fey will get her wish. “I would like Oprah Winfrey to play my best friend in a feature-length movie,” she tells me. “I just want to hang out with Oprah. I’m a 37-year-old white woman. It’s in my blood. I need to be with Oprah.”

Alas, Prince Charming did not win a Golden Globe for his flick Across The Universe. “It’s an honor just to be nominated,” I told him after the announcement. Indeed, the Beatles-inspired musical faced tough competition from Sweeney Todd, Juno, Charlie Wilson’s War and Hairspray.

Suddenly, I felt sad for best actress – musical or comedy nominees Ellen Page and Nikki Blonsky. (We sat beside her during a screening of The Last Mimzy - how wild.) While the sting of rejection wasn’t as great, they didn’t even get to bask in their moment of possibility.

Johnny Depp Wows at ‘Sweeney Todd’ Premiere

December 21st, 2007 / Author: Valerie Nome

51071898Johnny Depp waves, signs autographs and gamely poses for fans wielding cellphone cameras before the NYC premiere of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, which is in theaters today. A woman shrieks “look how handsome he is,” but Johnny’s head is not in the clouds. His slouch gives away his self-deprecating manner, and his Southern charm transcends his Hollywood glamour.

Based on the Broadway musical, the thriller Sweeney Todd marks the sixth time Johnny has teamed up with director Tim Burton. (Count ‘em: Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride and now Sweeney Todd.)

“I think working with Tim takes on a life of its own,” a greasy-haired, spectacle-wearing, goateed, surprisingly petite Johnny says.

Of Johnny’s metamorphosis during their 17-year-partnership, Tim says, “He always keeps his artistic integrity. That’s the most amazing thing. In a business that can transform people, he’s stayed the same with the exception that he’s always looking to do interesting things. It’s a good combination, I think. We speak in Vulcan now.”

Irish beauty Jayne Wisener plays Johnny’s daughter. “He’s very nice,” she tells me. “He asked me questions about how I got involved in it, and all that. He told me I’d be fine in the future. He’s very friendly and we chatted about where I was from and things like that, but I was a bit too shy to ask Johnny Depp personal questions. He’s still a crush of mine.”

Jamie Campbell Bower, who appears in the movie, describes Johnny as exuding a cool aura. “He has this cool vibe, like ‘why can’t I be as cool as you?’ I learned how to act from Johnny. It was like Acting 101. He’s amazing; he’s so good. He’s such a great actor. I wish I was as good as him.”

Several famous fans step out to see Johnny in action.

“I think every story I would have to share about being a fan of Johnny Depp would be like every other woman in the world,” Evanescence singer Amy Lee, who is bundled up in a black fur, admits. “He’s beautiful, he’s an Adonis.”

Cast members from Broadway’s Mary Poppins, Drowsy Chaperone, Xanadu, Spring Awakening and Legally Blonde dash through. What does Legally Blonde’s Laura Bell Bundy, who plays Reese Witherspoon’s character, love about Johnny Depp?

“He’s incredibly talented,” Laura tells me. “I think he’s a really charismatic actor, and he does a really good job with characters. He’s interesting to watch. You don’t really take your eyes off him when he’s onscreen. I loved him in Crybaby.”

Amy Lee is back.

“I’m very excited to see the movie,” she says. “I’m a huge Tim Burton fan. I’m a big fan of the play, and I’m just here to see it actually and be the first one on the block to brag about it.”

Consider it done.
