In what is surely not a case of stunt casting, the Today Show has decided the person most appropriate to be a correspondent on education issues is a daughter of former U.S. President George W. Bush.

Angelina: “I Think About My Own Kids”
June 19th, 2009
Angelina Jolie’s experience as a mother of six has influenced her feelings on the plight of refugee mothers, as the UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador tells Today’s Ann Curry about those suffering in Pakistan.
"It was just such a desperate situation and as a mother it was hard for her to say, ‘We don’t have any food,’ " she says of a woman she met there. "And I think about my kids, and the car, and it’s too long of a drive and you want to make sure you’ve got a snack for them. And to think to go days and days and days and have absolutely nothing to give your children, it’s got to be the most difficult thing as a mother."
As the mother she continues to be to many of those in need, Angie wants to make sure her children grow up knowing refugee children as they do other kids.
"I want them to see it as an area where they can go down the street and play football with those kids and get to know them, and as they grow up seem them as those friends they spent time with," she says. "Hopefully I can raise them with a more accurate view of the world than I was raised with, maybe they’ll naturally be better people."
So if Angelina knew then what she knows now, how would her life be different?
"I think it would’ve gotten me through my youth easier, I would’ve been less self destructive," she admits. "You see people who have suffered things you will never know, and you know lucky you are."
Speaking of lucky, Angelina agrees with partner Brad Pitt, who told Ann this was one of the happiest times in his life.
"I am extememly happy in my life," she says. "My children are healthy and it’s one of the most extraordinary times in my life and I’m able to do good things and good work."

Roker Slams Speidi… Again
June 16th, 2009
Yesterday, when The Today Show’s Al Roker dared to ask reality TV loudmouths Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag some honest questions about their bratty behavior on the set of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here, it was unlikely that the TV vet had any intention of making the newlyweds any more famous than they already are. But both the interview — and Speidi’s comments about it afterward — have pushed the reality stars even further into the spotlight.
On this morning’s edition of Today, Al defended himself against the allegations that he "persecuted" Spence and Heidi by not lobbing softball questions at them.
"I believe I asked what a lot people wanted to know," Al told co-host Meredith Vieira. And as for Spencer’s statement that it was only by the grace of God that he didn’t physically attack the Today host, Roker commented, "If he had tried to come across, I would have dropped him like a bag of dirt."
Regarding Heidi’s charge that Al has a problem with women, he countered, "I’ve interviewed hundreds of women; never had a complaint… They are so unused to people actually asking them a real question. They don’t know how to handle it."
In the end, Roker seemed dumbfounded that two people of such meager accomplishments could cause such a stink. "There are a lot of celebrities who come on the show," he said by comparison. "Who’ve actually done something, who act civil."
Today Show Hosts in Bike Accident
March 23rd, 2009
Looks like Meredith Vieira will be without her right hand man on Today for a little bit, as she and co-host Matt Lauer were involved in a biking accident over the weekend, leaving Matt with a dislocated shoulder.
"He was riding his bike over the weekend and he had a run-in with a deer," joked Meredith, adding that Matt still had his sense of humor about the run-in on Long Island.
He quipped via email that “the deer was hired by the competition.”
“I’d hire the deer — but just to graze him,” Meredith joked back to fill-in cohost Lester Holt.
Michael Phelps Calls Pot Photo “Bad Mistake”
March 12th, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff
Michael Phelps is speaking up about that infamous photo of him "allegedly" smoking marijuana.
In an interview with The Today Show’s Matt Lauer airing March 13 and March 15, Phelps admits that what he did was "bad judgement" and "a mistake."
"It was– really, you know, the people I hurt, you know, is my family, clearly. My friends," he says. "The close people around me. And most importantly, the fans. And– and, you know, I realize that that hurt a lot of people."
When asked to recall the events leading up to the photo being taken Phelps says, "I mean, we were just celebrating, honestly. And– you know, there was probably two or three people there I didn’t know. It was a very small group. Six or seven people probably total in the whole house. Like nothing major. You know, not like a giant college house party. It was nothing like that. It was just a small group and we were just sitting around and celebrating."

Phelps says he found out about the photo around the same time that the rest of America did. But he explains that while he knows he made a mistake, it wasn’t the handful of lost endorsements that first caused him the biggest worry.
"It’s not about money to me. So, you know, the — the contract side of things, yeah, I was disappointed," he says. "But, you know, I think the biggest thing is– is who I hurt the most. Like, if I lost money, okay. It’s not an issue with me."
In the age of camera phones and the readily accessible internet, did Michael ever think that maybe someone at the party might snap a picture and take advantage of the situation?
"I trusted my friends who were there about who they were," he says. "And clearly they weren’t trusted people… Sometimes you learn the hard way."
Matt Lauer to Interview Tom Cruise Again
December 10th, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff
Nearly three years after that explosive Today interview when Tom Cruise called Matt Lauer "glib," the two will once more get together for an on-air chat on Dec. 15.
In June of 2005 Tom got a little bit feisty with Matt after a line of questioning involving Scientology’s anti-psychiatry stance, saying at one point, "No, you see. Here’s the problem. You don’t know the history of psychiatry. I do."
Tom will be promoting his latest project, the WWII film Valkyrie, which centers around a plot to assassinate Hitler, as well as his wife Katie Holmes, kids Isabella, Connor and Suri and their life together.

Although things were tense during that first interview, the guys seem to have made up, with Tom appearing at the Friar’s Club roast to tease Matt in October.
"Believe it or not, Matt and I are friends," Tom told the audience. "Which some of you may find surprising because we had that, uh… you know."
Such good friends, in fact, that they keep in touch often, joked Tom.
"When we can’t get together, we’ll talk on the phone two, three, four times a day and I’ll say, ‘Matt are you watching this?’ And he’ll say, ‘yeah.’ And we’ll sit there."
