Gotham Independent FIlm Awards Noms

October 20th, 2008

The IFP already announced earlier this year that Penélope Cruz would be receiving a tribute at this year’s Gotham Independent Film Awards, and now the rest of the nominees have been announced.

Topping the list with four noms is little-known Ballast, while Rachel Getting Married, Synecdoche, New York and Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona have all received two nominations.

Penélope and her Vicky Cristina Barcelona castmates, Javier Bardem, Rebecca Hall and Scarlett Johansson will be going up against Anne Hathaway and Rosemarie DeWitt in Rachel Getting Married – both are nominated for Best Ensemble Performance.

Hopefully Michelle Williams will be crossing her fingers for new beau Spike Jonze, their film Synecdoche, New York, which he produced, is up for both Best Feature and Best Ensemble Performance.

Inside ScarJo & Ryan’s Secret Wedding!

October 1st, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds’ hush-hush ceremony may have shocked fans, but it came as no surprise to their closest friends.

“It is exactly what she wanted,” a pal of the couple tells OK!. “This is the happiest I’ve seen her.”

The couple said their “I dos” at a remote retreat outside of 31-year-old Ryan’s hometown of Vancouver, British Columbia, on Sept. 27, less than six months after Scarlett, 23, publicly debuted her diamond solitaire engagement ring.

In keeping with the low-key duo’s private personalities, the wedding included a handful of close friends and family, including Scarlett’s twin brother, Hunter, and her mother, Melanie Sloan.

While Scarlett plays a free-spirited romantic in her recent hit Vicky Cristina Barcelona, in real life, “I believe in finding a soulmate,” she told Cosmopolitan magazine.

Meanwhile, Ryan — whose upcoming movie is aptly called The Proposal — can’t wait for their next life-changing event: parenthood.

“I feel like I need to fulfill the genetic paradigm, the destiny of it,” he tells OK!. “It definitely appeals to me.”

Congratulations!

Javier & Penelope’s Sexy Getaway

September 8th, 2008

The couple that vacations together stays together! Spanish hotties Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem are apparently still going strong after a recent week-long trip to the super-exclusive Cayo Espanto, a private island resort off the coast of Belize (Tiger Woods is another famous guest.)

The Vicky Cristina Barcelona co-stars kept to themselves, went scuba-diving, had a picnic for two on the beach and used a helicopter to get to and from their excursions.

"They enjoyed their privacy," a source tells OK!.

Although the sizzling twosome have never confirmed their romance, they’ve been linked since last year. They had tongues wagging even more when they were spotted getting close on a vacation in the Maldives in October. Since then they’ve been snapped being romantic everywhere from NYC to Nice, cuddling, holding hands and acting like, well, a couple.

While all questions related to their romance were off-limits during press appearances for Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona, their offscreen performance as a couple in love seems to be mirroring the white-hot chemistry they share onscreen.

Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem Step Out For ‘Vicky’

August 14th, 2008

Penelope Cruz glitzes into the special screening of Vicky Cristina Barcelona held at Cinema 2 in NYC. The 34-year-old stunner is glamorous at every turn, and speaks with a thick accent. She appears in the Woody Allen dramedy about three women – Penelope, Scarlett Johansson and Rebecca Hall – who fall in love with the same man during a vacation in Spain.

“She’s somebody who is very unstable,” Penelope says of her character. “She’s damaged. She wants to create something.”

What does she draw on from her own life when playing such a complicated role?

“You go through verses when you are preparing for your character and during interviews people ask you how you prepared for your character,” she says. “For me, I have my own system and it works every time in every movie. I think you always feel a little bit pretentious when you hear that question.”

She gets flustered when asked if she’s complicated.

Javier Bardem
returns to the familiar by acting with Penelope.  “Everybody changes I guess. I haven’t acted with her in fifteen years!”

Patricia Clarkson calls Woody “a tremendous talent.”

Here is designer Tara Subkoff to dish on the recent kiss between Danity Kane’s Aubrey O’Day and Lydia Hearst caught on vid.

She tells me it will appear in an ad for her Bebe line, Tara Subkoff for Bebe, which will be in stores September 1. She says the clothes range from “sexy” to “forgiving” and are perfect for everyone from high schoolers to grandmothers.

Tara says Aubrey is not part of the campaign – just Lydia.

“I think they did that to get more paparazzi. I wanted to get the point of view of their point of view.”

Why is Lyd perfect for the line?

“She really looks like the Marlena Dietrich of her time. She’s gorgeous, she’s iconic.”

And, what does she think of Aubrey?

“No comment, I don’t know her but I’m interested to find out.”

The lights dim as Carla Gugino, Zoe Kravitz, Geogina Chapman and Harvey Weinstein and stylist Phillip Bloch enter the theater. On with the show!

Vicky Cristina Barcelona is in theaters Friday.

Scarlett Kisses & Tells

August 11th, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

It’s safe to say Scarlett Johansson has two leading men in her life these days.  The first is her fiance, Ryan Reynolds.  The other is Woody Allen.  The actress has starred in the last three films Allen has made–Match Point, Scoop and now  Vicky, Cristina Barcelona, co-starring Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem.

In the film, the actress shares a controversial smooch with Cruz–one that Johansson admits was more pleasant than she anticipated.

"Everybody wants to know what it was like," she says in an interview with Parade.com.   "Penelope had less facial hair than a guy so it was certainly more pleasant. It  was better than kissing Jonathan Rhys-Meyers in Match Point. Kissing him wasn’t that bad, but he did have to stop and shave in the middle of a scene even though he’d shaved that morning. The man has really got some beard on him."

Johansson describes her relationship with Allen as "a young woman, great-uncle…Let’s say a young blossoming woman and a sort of droopy, Jewish kind of yenta" and calls him a "standup comedian who loves an audience."

"Oy, he’s such a diva," she jokes.  "He won’t do anything until he gets his muffins in the morning.  It’s out of control.  Actually, I worship Woody and I’d do anything on one of his movies."

Vicky Cristina Barcelona deals with different kinds of love and relationships.  The subject matter is perhaps right up Scarlett’s alley.  Earlier this year, she became engaged to fiance Ryan Reynolds.

"I’m so fortunate to be in a very solid and comfortable relationship," she says.  "I’m in a good place in my life right now.  I’m a really big believer in loving yourself before you can give love to somebody else.  The healthiest and most inspiring relationships are the ones where you’re so comfortable with the other person that you actually learn more about yourself that you could never appreciate before."

The actress continues, "I don’t think there’s anything wrong with experimenting with different lifestyles, especially when you’re young, but at any time in your life," she says.  "Sometimes you expect something is going to go one way and it doesn’t turn out, or sometimes the unexpected happens and it’s positive. If you’re not open to that, I think you can’t live life to the fullest."

Woody on Scarlett: “She’s Gifted, It’s Obvious”

August 5th, 2008

While promoting his latest film Vicky Cristina Barcelona, seasoned filmmaker Woody Allen shared his thoughts on the media, the paparazzi and how he’s dealt with living a private life in the public eye.

In an interview with Extra, Allen, 72, says, "It’s not a natural thing for a human being to get out of the car and be photographed a thousand times and hear your name screamed. It’s very unnerving but I do it. I do it because I have a commitment to the movie and the producer."

Allen, who’s been in showbusiness for over 40 years, has a habit of using the same actress in several of his films. His most recent muse is the newly engaged Scarlett Johansson who stars alongside Penelope Cruz in Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

"She’s great. It’s obvious," Allen exclaims. "She’s beautiful. She’s talented. She’s gifted."

As for Scarlett’s view of Woody, the 23-year-old actress says, "I’ve always been a huge fan of his! I grew up in New York. My parents waited in line for his film’s opening night for an hour. I grew up watching his films. We’ve done three films together. It’s a dream come true for me. We make each other laugh and have a good time."

Scarlett starred in 2005’s Match Point and 2006’s Scoop. Both films were written and directed by Woody Allen.

No Steamy Scenes for ScarJo & Penélope!

June 6th, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

A lot of filmakers would be happy for audiences to think their latest movie would be full of sizzling sex scenes involving two of the most beautiful women in Hollywood.

But director Woody Allen has flatly denied the rumors that his new movie features wild lesbian trysts between Scarlett Johansson, 23, and Penelope Cruz, 34.

After Vicky Cristina Barcelona premiered in Cannes in May, journalists got in a froth about its "steamy" lesbian scenes between the leading ladies and their threesome with Javier Bardem, 39.

However, the three-time Oscar winning director, 72, told British magazine Empire that, while the actors do share love scenes in the film, the press have blown them way out of proportion.

"There’s no truth comparable to anything you’ve read. There’s the barest smidgeon of sex in it," he said of his 43rd movie, which is set for US release on September 5.

"There are sex scenes between all the characters in the movie: between the men and the women, and the women and the women. That is accurate, but I’d say there’s probably not even 20 seconds of sex in the whole picture."
