Billy Bob’s Band Backs Out

April 13th, 2009

Note to actors-turned-musicians: Don’t liken your audience to any kind of side dish.

Billy Bob Thornton’s band has canceled the remainder of its Canadian tour after an unfortunate comment made by the actor on air, according to the Associated Press.

The Boxmasters front man told radio host Jian Ghomeshi of CBC radio’s "Q" show that Canadian audiences were… well, blah.

"We tend to play places where people throw things at each other," Billy Bob said. "Here, they just sort of sit there. And it doesn’t matter what you say to ‘em. … It’s mashed potatoes but no gravy."

Billy was also apparently ticked off that Ghomeshi started the interview with questions about his film career, a topic that was supposedly off limits.

The band then opened for Willie Nelson on Thursday in Toronto and were greeted by boos, catcalls and jibes of "Here comes the gravy." Sounds like a regular old food fight!

The Boxmasters then posted a note on Willie Nelson’s site Friday with the cancellation announcement, "due to one band member and several of the crew having the flu."

Maybe it’s food poisoning from a bad batch of… gravy? Just sayin’.

Catching Up With Chris Kirkpatrick

August 13th, 2008

Chris Kirkpatrick is having a blast on CMT’s Gone Country 2.

Who is his dream country collaboration?

Willie Nelson would be a great one,” he tells me. “I like his style, I like the way he delivers everything. He’s not a great singer, but he’s got that honest delivery to his music.”

The *NSYNCer, 36, says he’s dating but not in a serious relationship.

“I can’t sew my oats with women, so I don’t know if I’ll ever have a steady, but I like to date a lot. I like to go out.”

How would Chris describe his perfect date?

“Sometimes I feel like going out and partying or going away and traveling somewhere. Sometimes I feel like dinner and a movie or a DVD.”

When he’s not working on alternative-pop act Nigels 11, Chris can be found playing his favorite video games, Army of One and Pirate.

“I play video games a lot, but it’s mostly music.”

How does Nigels 11 compare to *NSYNC?

“It still has the melodic overtones and hooky melodies but it’s a lot different. It’s not the poppy-pop stuff. It’s a little bit … I don’t want to say edgier, because that’s not really what it is, but it’s on a different vein of the pop genre than *NSYNC.”

Willie Nelson & Farm Aid Help Flood Victims

June 20th, 2008

As massive flooding continues to ravage parts of the Midwest, Farm Aid is reaching out to family farmers in towns along the Mississippi and other rivers.

Country singer turned activist and Farm Aid president and founder Willie Nelson activated the Family Farm Disaster Fund to get immediate relief to family farmers in Iowa, Wisconsin and across the Midwest.

Nelson is set to deliver the first grant from the Family Farm Disaster Fund on Saturday to the Iowa Grassroots Coalition, a group of farm and faith-based organizations in Iowa working on the recovery effort.

"Our hearts go out to the folks all along the Mississippi who are being
affected by the severe floods that have taken out towns and farms in Iowa and Wisconsin," Nelson said on Friday. "At Farm Aid, we have had friends in these communities for 23 years who can deliver immediate support to family farmers, getting them back on the land, growing good food for all of us."

Farm Aid emergency assistance is supporting local recovery efforts in Iowa and Wisconsin, delivering an initial $10,000 in disaster-relief funds to grassroots organizations.

Since the Family Farm Disaster Fund was activated on Wednesday, more than $40,000 has already been donated by individuals and organizations, including Best Buy and WhiteWave.

"In the face of the devastation caused by the flooding across the Midwest, Farm Aid is proud to work with the individuals and organizations that have already stepped up and shown their support for family farmers," said Farm Aid Executive Director Carolyn Mugar. "Together, we will help these farmers rebuild and protect our source of good food."

OK! Exclusive: Jessica Simpson’s Country Troubles

November 7th, 2007

Jessica Simpson has her work cut out for her if she wants to make it in Nashville.

As reported by OK! a few weeks ago, the pop tart has descended upon the town to record her first country album, but some players of the game believe the 27-year-old needs to step up to the plate.

“She is definitely going to have to work hard to prove herself in Nashville because people are judged on talent and merit, not where they eat in L.A. or shop or go to clubs,” a source tells OK! at the BMI Awards in Nashville, where Jess was accompanied pal Willie Nelson.

A strong work ethic is key since Jess is “working with some of the most talented producers and songwriters in the business so she’s not going to be able to skate by.”

The buxom blonde is currently collaborating with John Rich of Big & Rich on tunes and reportedly flexing her songwriting muscles, a skill she’s been honing since her last album, 2006’s A Public Affair, showing dedication on her part.

“I do think she is really committed to working hard and raising the bar on the music she releases.”

Willie Nelson sings for the Environment

September 11th, 2007

At last night’s Ambassadors of Rock Tour featuring Willie Nelson at the Hard Rock Times Square, which was held to support the Sustainable Biodiesel Alliance, Daryl Hannah who co-founded the alliance stopped to talk to OK! about the importance of biodiesel.

She said, “Basically an organization that’s an accreditation for bio fuel so you know where you’re bio fuel is coming from. Every choice we make is important. The best thing to do is think about the long-term ramifications and the short term. It just makes sense.”

The man of the night, Willie Nelson, also took a few moments out to talk to OK! The country music legend told OK! “I have no idea what I’m going to play tonight. It’s impromptu. Who knows what’s going to happen?”

But he never forgot what brought him out to play, the foundation, which his wife Annie helped found. “I’ve been using it for years on buses and trucks. We’ve been using everything from soy beans to vegetable oil.”

“I think more people are wanting to get involved. More people re knowing first of all how important it is that we grow our own fuel so that we don’t have to go around the world looking for it. People now are thinking about the food they’re eating so they’re putting two and two together,” he said.

As for what music fans can expect from Willie the music legend? “I have a new song I’m doing tonight called “peaceable solutions.” It’s kind of a fight song. So it’s good.”

He later brought down the house playing to a jam-packed audience of Willie’s biggest fans- both famous and not famous! By Jocelyn Vena

Woody Zips His Lips About Pal Owen

September 11th, 2007

At last night’s Ambassadors of Rock Tour featuring Willie Nelson at the Hard Rock Times Square, which was held to support the Sustainable Biodiesel Alliance, actor and environmentalist Woody Harrelson showed up, but he wasn’t much in the mood for talking up the night’s cause, let alone chatting about his good friend, actor Owen Wilson, whose recent failed suicide attempt made headlines around the world.

“We’re here because we’re all here to support biodiesel," Woody explained to OK!. "Hopefully we can change the society from a petrol to a biodeseil society.”

And when asked what the best thing anybody can do to help the environment is, he said, “The simplest thing is to buy organic.”
